In my outboard Emu Ultra, I can set the sample start point to correlate to
the key being
pressed. Correctly setting the modulation amount with source as key and
destination as
sample start point will trigger a sample to play back from different beat
subdivisions based
on the key pressed. The main goal of such a setup is to beat slice without
actually having to
cut a sample into different audio files.
I wonder if anyone here has had success in doing the same with the EXS24,
and if so, how it
was set up. Being able to implement this very handy feature of the Ultra by
way of the EXS24
would be a big time saver.
Hi,
Ofcourse there's a description for the file format, it's just not released
to the public.
However, I managed to reverse engineer the most important parts of it to
program an utility
that simply loads wav files and creates exs instrument files for them. It
also recreats the
folder structure from which the wav:s were loaded, (that becomes the menus
in the EXS24).
I first tried this with a library of 2000 wav:s I have had om my HD for a
long time that now
are playable from the EXS24 :)
I haven't reverse engineered all bytes of the exs file format, just enough
to be able to create
exs files (so far). If anyone's interested I'd be happy to share this little
utility! I can also
think of several features that could be added in the future.
Note: The program only applies to PC and is only tested for the EXS24 that
comes with Logic
ver 5.5.1, it's also an early alfa release 0.0.1
Cheers everyone

can this solve the exs sampler archive problem?

You don't HAVE to cut a sample into different audio files, but it would
probably actually be
easier to do so. Just be sure to backup your original file.
If I were going to do it the way you're trying to, here's how I'd do it:
First I'd look at those
beat slices and note at which sample each one starts. Then I'd create a new
instrument.
Then I'd create however many zones I need, probably mapped only to white
keys. Then I'd
load the sample to each zone and disable pitch (just to be safe). Finally,
I'd set the start
point of each zone at the sample the beat starts and end point at the last
sample before
the next beat.
Of course, you'll want to alter attack/decay time from the front of EXS so
you avoid
"surprises."
I've pondered making construction kits, but one life is just too short to
get to everything.
The problem with the above method is that the same long sample would be
loaded
multiple times, decreasing your sample RAM. You might as well chop it up.
I'm not sure
modulation source/destination will work, although technically it SHOULD,
because there's
the question of accurately starting the sample at the correct point. If you
have, say, 4
beats and the keys were set to trigger a percentage modulation, like 0%,
25%, 50%, and
75% respectively, and each beat occurs at EXACTLY those points, then there
shouldn't be
any problem. Just set it up in the EXS router.
Or you could just keep things simple and chop it up. ;)
I've never tried it your way before, but I think I'll check it out to see if
it CAN be done. I'm
sure it can.
yours,
Kyle Beckham

Hello All,
I've posted a FREE set of Suspended Slate Rocks (10 mb) for the EXS
24 at the Bolder website. This is a demo version of the full version
which is 140 mb.
Also posted are a couple of mp3 demos, one with narration explaining
how I approached the process of sampling and programming these slate
rocks.
Have fun!
Dennis

How were the rocks suspended? Did you drill holes in them or what?
It sounds excellent: fine job - thanks.

Yes. I drilled holes in the top of each rock (the top being where
ever I determined it would be) and then strung fishing line through
them.
I then ran a laundry line across my studio connected to some pipes on
each side of the room.
I struck the slates with a rubber mallet, the stick end of the mallet
as well as the flesh of my hand in different areas of the slate rocks
which produces different colors. I have a pile of 15 of these things
sitting in my basement of all different sizes (I ended up using 7 of
them for this set). I'd like to do another sampling of them some day
with a slightly different approach when I have time. I'm happy you
like them!

there is a reference on the internet for a freeware sf2 to exs
converter by Mikael Persson / Soundware. His website is no longer in
existence. Does anyone have a copy of this free program? If so, can
you post it to the group or email it to me?
Thanks,

Hi! I have the cdxtract 4.1 and the QL Brass S5000. I've tried to convert to
exs24 on logic pro 7 (mac OS10.3.9)but it has some problem...it didnot
convert the samples.
The program was converted but i think it didnot do it correctly.'
What i mean is the program converted shows the right zone assignment( i
hope) but with only one sample on all zones but i still can't play any sound
cause the samples in the audio file field says 0:00:00:00.
CDxtract manage to convert the one sample of every program.
I tried using sample only convert from wav to aif...it didnt work.
Can anyone help me out?

Is a program necessary? EXS24 can import .sf2 on its own. Put the .sf2 file
into
~/Library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments/
Start Logic, insert EXS24 in an instrument channel, load up the soundfont2
file, and EXS24
will convert it to .exs for you.

I have Logic Express, EXSP24, I don't think it will load .sf2, will it?

Hi! I finally got the solution from sonikmatter forum. What i did was copied
the whole file from all 5 Disc of QLBrass S5000 to hard disk and then i
CDxtract it to exs24. Its working fine now. Thanks

Pretty sure it will, havn't used express for a while, but i think it
does.... Just checked the
express 7 manual and it says yes. Express 8 has EXS24 so it definitely can..
Mike
Logic Express 8 has the EXS24, but Logic Express 7 only has the EXS24P
(player only), AFAIK, u can only play EXS34 instruments...no converting...

Thanks for your replies.
So does this mean that nobody has a copy of SF2EXS.exe? It is too bad
that a useful free utility like that would have disappeared from the
net with no trace.
Thanks,

according to the manual you can....
"Importing SoundFont2 Files
To make use of this functionality, simply copy or move your SoundFont2 files
into the
Sampler Instruments folder.
Select the file name in the EXSP24 Sampler Instrument load flip-menu and the
file will
automatically be converted. An EXS Instrument file will be created in the
Sampler
Instruments folder which contains the original SoundFont2 file. The raw
samples
associated with the Sampler Instrument will be placed in a SoundFont Samples
folder
within the Logic program folder. "

Thanks, big time for that information,
I'll let you know how it works.

I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Patches will play
fine for awhile then all of a sudden they abruptly cut out after a second
with a "pop". I have to restart Logic to get back to trouble free
operation.
System is a dual 2.66 gHz intel mac , OS 10.4.10. Latest ver. of Logic
Studio.
You have got to tick archive in the .exs sampler instrument folder.Right
click then properties, this should solve the problem.Dont have anything else
ticked.
Its a long time since this question but someone might need an answer,
Cheers
Dave
P.S. the problem usually arrives when copying file from cd,if its an import
Akai for example I guess you wouldnt get the problem
Yep, the same here.

Does anyone know where the extended quantize parameters have gone? Does 8
still got them? Cause that was what really made a difference in terms of
quantizing a performance preserving the human feel...

Dear Logic-Users,
I am very concerned about the implications on my company reputation as one
of your posts is appearing as "number 3" and "number 4"
in Google Search results when a customer searches for our domain name. It
includes very misleading information which could have a negative impact on
our company and brand. Here is the link to this post:

And here is the impact it is having on Google...

I totally understand that the views expressed are not your own, and that
this is a forum, however, I am requesting that you (as the moderator of the
site) remove any pages that refer to us acting in any type of "illegal
activity". We have never sold illegal products, and we would never do
this. We are a legitimate Sample CD retailer (and developer). We buy our
products from Time+Space, Loopmasters, AMG, etc... Thirdly, we are major
contributors to the "Anti-Piracy" forums that are being set up to
counteract Piracy on torrent sites. I would be happy for you to contact any
of the above suppliers to confirm that we are a 100% legitimate retailer of
Sample CDs. If you ask them what Jan Franklin's attitude to illegal
downloads of Sample CDs is.. You will get a VERY strong reaction. We are
systematically going through all of the major developers urging them to take
ACTION against illegal sites and individuals who are destroying the
industry.
For a short while we did sell some Synthesizer Patch sample cds, however,
these did not include the original patches from the original synthesizers
and therefore, this was not unlawful. They were simply recordings of fresh
"non-factory" presets, very much like developers of new synth
sound banks make money from selling patches for the Access Virus, etc. One
of your users states:
"it is, in fact, totally illegal and in most courts or law across the
world could be prosecuted under various copyright laws and laws relating to
'unfair trading' "
I don't appreciate this. I also think the way that our company name
(Inspiration Sounds) seems to be linked with www.flossmodestudios.com is
also misleading. We have nothing to do with this company and we have no
associations with them. I have sent this email to your "WHOIS"
lookup email address, but I thought I would also post it here so your users
no our stance on this matter. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on
this.
Kind regards,
