I like that solution; would be nice if you could get an original
sample that was pitched higher or lower. Most multisampled things get
pitched samples from the original source at about 2-3 pitches per
octave. (More or less depending on your anal capacity or the need of
the sound; e.g. vocals don't transpose well, while soft strings do.)
Just out of interest, Tascam released a free piano instrument that is
made out of just ONE piano sample! It's more for geek showing off,
but it uses impulse manipulation and other techniques to "stretch"
the piano sound to be legit up and down the keyboard, and also
replicates an valid velocity timbre. But that takes a lot of special
technology and certainly isn't applicable to the EXS24.
SampleTank has a Stretch feature that is more formant based then
impulse based, but it can go a fairly good job at making one sample
work across a wider range of pitches. It's really cool, especially
when working with vocal phrases and licks.

There's a very nice bit of software that will help you:
Keymap (from Redmatica)
I think this will do the pitch/time thing and then autocreate your
instrument with sample on every note.

I've been doing research on the web and can only find really expensive sound
libraries that have taiko drums in them.
Anyone know of any sample cds that don't cost the earth?

I am experiencing an issue in the 'group' section of the EXS sampler - the
group is only receiving midi when set to channel 1 in the 'select by'
'm.cha.' parameter box - however, when set to channel 1 in this parameter
box, samples will play triggered by ANY channel [1-16] from my controllers.
I'm stumped -
Thanks for help !!

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to load the same sample into an
EXS instrument more than once so, for example, I can have a Hi-Hat
sample triggered from two different keys..?
At the moment, once I load a sample it's filename disappears from the
browser so it cannot be loaded again into another zone. Is there a
workaround for this..?
I know I can disable pitch and set the keyrange for the keys I need,
but this is not practical if I want to use black keys for the hats and
white keys for something else.
Cheers, Andy M
Sorry, but this didn't make it through due to Yahoo telling me my mails were
bouncing, so I'm posting it again.

Yes. Actually there's two workarounds.
1) Switch off "filter used" in the EXS' file loading dialog and
you'll
see all the samples you're using already.
2) Copy the zone already using the sample. The usual copy/paste
commands are working just fine. I would also set up a keycommand for
"move zones left/right with root key", so you can instantly move
the
copied zone in order to avoid later confusion. I'm using Ctrl +
(left/right) Arrows and it suits me fine.

Just guessing but try copy/ paste of the sample zone you want. It
should paste back onto the same key range but then you can move it?

does anyone know of a free online resource for the exs-24 and vienna

I am currently using Logic Pro 7.2.1 and I'm using Recycle. When trying to
create a new EXS instrument using REX files it greys out the option. Is
there an software update I need?

I would think that Logic installs the Shared Lib (a file/system that
allows extraction of Recycle slices); but maybe not. Go to
www.propellerhedas.se, click Downloads, Miscellaneous Updates, and
REX Shared Library updates.

Did you try to place the rx2 file inside your sample instruments folder? In
that case, the EXS should see and convert it automatically. You could later
on delete the original rx2 file or keep it for future reference.

I've just transfered all my sounds onto a new machine (Mac Pro 2.33
dual core), My old system was built up to Logic 7.2 off of upgrades
from as early as Logic 5. My samples in the old system were kind of
scattered due to the different ways that Logic dealt with samples thru
the each revision. Anyway I'm doing a new clean install of 7.2 and
having issues getting all my stuff to gel. I had an Akai samples
folder created from importing off of Sample CDs. When making the
transfer I realized i dont have the CD ROMs any more to reimport them
into Logic, But I do have the .Aif files created by Logic on the
import. As a quick fick I went thru and made new instruments from all
my .AIF drum samples from the Akai foler (mostly dance mega drums stuff)
When I created them they showed up in the EXS browser fine complete
with all my subfolder organizations. After Coming back to the machine
(after reboot) Only One (1 !!) of the drum kits shows up while the many
other drum kit instruments were not to be scene. All searches with
project manager give me nothing. It sees everything there just fine but
has many samples it can't place. In the Finder all the instrument
files are greyed out (not selectable) and are labeled just "Logic Pro
File", while the one that shows up in EXS shows it as EXS instrument
file. All these instruments were created at the same time (in one 2
hour session of fun! not) All samples are there, but the instrument
files got messed up...
Anyone?
PS thanx for listening to my saga

This is a job for Redmatica's EXS Manager. There are few re-linking
problems it can't solve, and it's lightning fast.

I really did n't think my MAC was that noisy. I have tried moving the MIC
further away from the MAC but apart from moving the MAC out the room ANY
ideas!?

Just a thought... Is your drive full? If it is that would possibly
corrupt your .exs files. (See thread on LUG).

I actually have these samples on a sample cdrom called 'dance mega
drums' but it is not reading properly. I am creating an 80's drum
machine kit from the following drum machines:
Oberheim DMX
Oberheim DX
Sequential Circuits Drumtraks
Emu Drumulator
Linn LM-1
Linn 9000 etc
Linn Drum
those sort of drum machines. In the late 80's early 90's Jamaican
reggae was dominated with a sound mostly created by the Oberheim DX in
the hands of 'Steely and Clevie'. This is the main reason I am putting
together these sounds. To emulate this era of reggae dancehall.
Yeah my akai cdrom must be scratched or something. I can load some of
them but I want to make sure all the drum sounds from each machine are
included in this kit.
Thanks yall.

Sensitive mics and noisy computers are obviously a bad mix in a room.
You can use the directional patterns of the mic to reject the computer
noise to some degree but the real solution is to encase the computer in
a sound absorbing box of some kind. These Isolation boxes can be bought
from some places but they aren't cheap.
You can also build your own out of timber and/or drywall and sound
deadening materials quite cheaply but you have to maintain ventilation
or your machine will run hot and fail. Having access to DVD slots and
power switches etc and being able to see hard-drive lights etc are other
issues. Ideally you should be able to easily open the box and access the
machine and if the front panel is glass or perspex you can get visual
feedback from the machine case too.

Aside from the iso box route you can try one of the
new devices like the SE Reflexion Filter. They've been
backordered but I'm expecting one tommorrow. I think
Real Traps now makes one too. They will mount on the
same mic stand as your condenser but form a nice
acoustic barrier between it and your noise source.
They are often recommended by Sound on Sound Magazine
to anyone who's not recording vocals in a professional
room.
