Sascha, I cannot thank you enough. I had asked this same question at the Apple Logic forum, and two guys told me to read the manual, which I had already researched. Instead of being flippant in that manner, you merely answered the question, accurately, and without a trace of what we call in the US "attitude". I am very grateful to you. Warmly, -futz

Subject: [EXS] OT: Error while syncing midi & audio question
Message #15877
Hi Folks, I guess this would be considered OT, but on the other hand the EXS is somewhat involved. I've got 3 tracks going in Logic Pro 7.2.1 on a MacBook Intel laptop. 1 audio track, 1 EXS with a bass sample, and 1 track of a stereo Apple Loop. Also while recording the audio track I had a PreSounus FaderPort attached through the USB hub as well as a Metric Halo 2882 through the firewire port. (BTW, this FaderPort gadget is really cool!) I recorder with this set up for a few days with no glitches at all. After that I backed up my data to a CD ROM disc. I then relaunched Logic to do some mixing and out of the blue I get "error trying to sync audio and midi". Everything is out of synch and it seems like the audio is playing back at a different sample rate. Also in the error message is something in regards to trying to recognize a sample rate of 4800. the Metric Halo and Logic are both set to 44.1 So I quite Logic and pulled the FaderPort and still got the same message. So, I decide to take the Metric Halo out of the configuration and play through the internal mac sound system and I still get this "synch" error. This morning I try it again and still get the same error. I play a DVD in the machine, come back to the Logic project in question and all of a sudden no errors!! Anybody have any wisdom concerning this bizarre behavior? Thanks for your time! Dennis

Dennis, I had the same problem once & it confounded me for WEEKS. The fix? I accidentally unplugged my firewire hub from the power, and when it was plugged back in, the problem was gone. It's like it needed to be "flushed out" or something. That's not the only thing that can cause it, but if you've exhausted everything else, just give it a shot. Ya never know. Kerry

I'm in the process of creating a track using only EXS Samplers. I'm trying to change the parameters on it right now and then perhaps automate it. Does anyone have any idea if it is possible to do this and if so how?

Subject: [EXS] Can't locate EXS24
Message #15883
Hi, I've been away from the EXS24 for over 6 months and recently I'm having a terrible time trying to use it. I've read the LP7 reference and plug in reference manuals and cannot locate the EXS24 on my G4 dual nor can I open it. Previously I had no trouble and I was able to open the sampler and load and edit the factory samples as well as some 3rd party sounds. When I click on the "inserts" word in the audio track mixer the EXS24 does not appear nor do the 3rd party sounds. I'm using LP7.2 Any ideas how I can boot the EXS24 and call up sounds? Thanks for any help, Regards, Jim

EXS24 won't appear on an Audio object (channel) You need to use an *Audio Instrument*. You may have an Environment layer specially for these, or they'll be in the Audio objects layer. You can also create one: Maker a new Audio object and go to the parameters. At Channel, select [Instrument] and then one of the Instruments no1-xx. Just under the label I/O is a blank pop-up. (Just above the Output selector) This is where you'll find all of Logic's internal instruments like the EXS24, plus any 3rd party ones you may have installed. You'll see [Mono] and [Stereo] and [Multichannel] In all cases, you can then select [Logic] and then you'll find the EXS24. That should get you going.... Regards - Colin

Subject: [EXS] File Limitations?
Message #15886
I'm using 5.5.1 of Logic on the PC and if I load too many files from my CD-roms into the EXS Sample & Sampler Instruments folder the menu for the EXS24 presets won't open. I've also noticed if you keep all of your files on one drive the access time for loading into EXS24 slows down extremely even if it's not trying to access sounds not in the EXS Sample & Sampler Instruments folder because it scans the whole hard drive looking for (.exs) files before it loads only the chosen ones. Does anyone know the exact file limitations of loading samples or is the limitation the presets(.exs)files? Thanks

I have no idea if this CDROM is still available. > I know, it's one of those instruments that really can't be sampled, > but then again, they all are... :-) Well, why? Plucked string instruments are much easier than bowed string or wind instruments. Ingo

Mike, Seem to recall that there was a limit of 32,000 instruments ( exs files ) at some point. Are you up in those numbers? If that is the case, I'd assume that is what causes your issues. No worry, your new EXS mark II will play the "old" EXS programs and samples, plus it can easily import Akai S-1000/3000 and Giga files too. (The only exception to your request is EXS will not import Giga3 programs (would be recent libraries) and Akai S-5000 programs. You'd need a third-party convertor for that.) Garth Hjelte Sampler User Hi, I have Akai Samples on Floppy Disks from (CD-3000 & S-3000xl) i have Logic 7.1 and want to know if i can get the samples off the floppys, i have tried the ESS24 but it is not finding the disks. Any help or advice would be great. Thanks, Spencer.

Yeah, the Mac is useless when it comes to reading the floppies. Really, the only solution for now is to find a S-3000/2000 and load them and save them to a SCSI ZipDrive or hard drive. You then can hook that drive up to the Mac (or insert the ZipDisk) and make an image of it, then burn a CD of it using Toast. Then EXS will see that CD. We would be happy to do this for you, contact me at garth@chickensys.com. Garth Hjelte Sampler User

Message #15895
Hi everyone. I'm working on a piece of music for my community theater's summer show that involves replacing the brass instruments of a piece with car horns. I'm not familiar enough with the EXS to create a sample set myself -- setting loop points and all that -- (nor do I really have the time) so I was wondering if anyone knew of an existing sample set, either an all-ready made EXS set or a soundfont set, of car horns-as-instruments? Message #15896
Hi Guys I have just done a new install of Logic Pro 7.2.3 on my Macbook Pro and I don't want to keep the EXS Factory Samples Folder on my system drive, I want to move it to my external drive. What's the best way to do this? I have seen/ heard of 2 different ways: 1. Using an alias 2. Using Symlink As I am a fairly recent convert to the Mac thing, I don't know how to do either of these, or if one is better than the other. BTW, I'm wondering if I should do the same thing to my Ultrabeat Samples file. Its not particularly big now, but anything that is sample based has the potential to grow pretty quickly. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Danny B.

You can move the sampler Instruments folder also, but you DO need an alias pointing to that though (with the alias renamed sampler instruments, not "sampler instruments alias" To relink the EXS with moved samples it's really worth getting redmatica EXSManager if you have many samples.
