Thanks Gerald,
Good thought. I gave it a shot. Unfortunately the save as function
doesn't give those options.

Hey Colin,
Quick question. Do you find your 7.2.1 to be backwards compatible? Ie
can you load a Logic 6 ASIO song into 7.2.1(meaning convert from ASIO to
Audio Units)??

Hi Gary,
In as much as it's ever compatible.....
There is obviously a big impediment with old songs from OS9 + ASIO as
they all used VST plugins. One has to have an OSX-VST version of each
plugin, plus you need to use the VST to AU wrapper by FXpansion. No
guarantees that the settings will load - ever (since v6.x).
If there are no 3rd party plugs, then it should work okay.

I am finishing setting up my system:
MAC G5 dual 2.7 gig
4 gig ram
OSX 10.4
Logic Pro 7.2
Final Cut Pro
Two= Internal 250 gig SATA 7200 rpm hard drives
One= External 300 gig Maxtor 7200 rpm USB 2.0 /Firewire 400 hard
drive
I plan on running programs DAW, plug in samplers/players on the main
drive and recording audio, film scores, etc. on the second internal
drive. I have the Maxtor to store projects on. I would like to
keep my system uncomplicated and "clean" and therefore would like
to
store all of my samples for EXS 24 on a second external Maxtor HD
and access/load them when I want to use them. I would also like to
keep the large sample files of other samplers/players such as BFD,
Garriton Orchestra, etc., on this second Maxtor External Hard
drive. Does this seem like the most logical set up? If NO, please
recommend a better way to go? Thanks

* No Colin I am sorry this was not a work around question. I am
sorry you misunderstood me. This was a question in relation to you
saying 7.2 is the most stable version. So let me put this out to
everyone. Can anyone load Logic 6 or older ASIO songs into their 7.2
without 7.2 crashing? I have tried & tried. I have to load them into 7.0
and then load the 7.0 song into 7.2. Anyone with a different
experience.
Thanks

Dang...
what if you look at the file in the Finder? This is a really long shot, but
are the file permissions of the file or the folder containing the file set
correctly?
Is it perhaps a stationery, although it then should open as a copy and the
name should be different...
Coming to my wits end...
Cheers and good luck!

That's exactly what I do and it works absolutely fine.
(Except I use a Lacie FW800 for samples, but the jury's still out on
Lacie vs Maxtor vs whatever).
You may well find FW400 is better than USB2.

Yep, I've done this recently. Just got an old HD of archives from a friend
to open and look
at, there is a mixture of old (pre osx/ASIO) Logic 6 files and osx logic 6
files. I can open
them all, but the plugins don't neccessarily load. This is on a PB 15"
1.5 /OSX 10.4.8 LP
7.2.3 if that would make any difference...

Hi Gary,
Sorry for the confusion.....
Yes - I load my old ASIO songs in Logic 7.2.1 easily with no
problems. I just tried on about 5 or 6 songs and they all work fine.
No crashes - no hassles.
Are you using 7.2.1 or just 7.2 ? Perhaps 7.2.1 is better?
I mentioned plugins before, because I have had problems getting songs
to translate properly. Also, I recall an issue with songs that used
Absynth v2 in ASIO songs. For some reason, the Absytnth 2 AU caused
crashes - never completely resolved that one.....

Well here lies the rub, and maybe there is something in the water in
this part of NYC, but we have 5 macs(2 G4's both dual 887, one g5 dual
2.5, and 2 powerbooks )
4(one with Logic 7.0) with Logic 7.2.3 and OSX 10.4.8 and none can take
an Logic file that was created in OS 9 as an asio file(specifically
Logic 6.4 files) and open them without crashing. Doesn't matter if they
have VST plugins or not. We have to open them in 7.0 and then into
7.2.3. When I spoke to a Logic "genius" about this, I was told
that a
complete new system install would fix this. We went thru this and
nothing changed. We are now almost done converting the files. But the
fact that this is consistent to our systems and not to yours is a
question in itself

My gear:
Apple Power Book 1.25 GHz, 1.5GB RAM, Logic Pro 6 with EXS24mkII
Hello to all,
I received and installed yesterday a PMI Piano (Steinway D, 5.2GB) which
sound incredibly beautiful and dinamic, when PLAYING IT SLOWLY. The problem
is that apparently the Power Book or the EXS can't handle this size of
instrument easily. When playing the piano normally, you have to almost
literally wait until the RAM reads the information of each note or chord you
are playing, but you cannot play smoothly. So, it's not practical to use
this piano with the computer/sampler configuration that I have. The same
problem happened to me earlier with a set of 500MB pianos (10 times
lighter!: the iPianos). They are also from PMI, made for Apple's Garage Band
but can be used in the EXS sampler, and are working perfectly smooth in
Garage Band (!) but not in the EXS without trouble.
Although this Steinway D piano is not small (5GB), what about if I would
like to install bigger pianos of 14GB or 15GB, or even the Ivory (40GB!); it
would be impossible. Anyway, I just want to be able to play my 5GB piano
SMOOTHLY and in peace. Could it be possible?
I would not like to know that I could only play smaller and
"cheapy" pianos
in my EXS super sampler because I don't have a G5 or a newer Mac Book Pro
with a lot RAM (anyway the top capacity of RAM in my Power Book is 2GB). As
a question, people with older systems can't play these kind of sampled
instruments? I would like to know from other musicians having similar
computer and software configuration, what happened to them when playing
their BIG pianos. Please advise me.
Thank you in advance.

Are you using the 24 bit version? PMI usually has a 16
and a 24 and the 16 might be better for your setup.
Can the PB take more RAM? If so max it out. Best
investment you can make.
Also, under Options on the EXS try checking (or
unchecking the Virtual Memory.

I have many sample CDs. But only a few are my core library. My
experience is that many libraries have the same sounds as others. Every
keyboard/module has the 808/909 kits etc. I like to collect drums but
not buy the same ones again and again.
My core original libraries I use are:
Akai MPC sound library (mostly drums that are quality akai library
drums and some drum machine stuff in there two, but heaps of good
acoustic and synthy drums)
116 electric drum machines (collection of drum machine hits, way too
many of those old organ analogue drums but good for the other drum
machines, except the kits are definately not the complete libraries of
each drum machine)
Dance Mega Drums Vol 1 (same as 116 drum machines except it has some
drum machines not on the other)
Real breakbeat libraries from a few different sources (I am a long time
rap music production fan and breakbeats are the real hip hop sound to
me, cut them up, layer them etc, I reCycle all breaks these days and
change the patterns, essential and used to be the pride and joy of hip
hop producers to have a fresh break, still quite tricky to track heaps
of them down but they are out there)
Alesis DM Pro, DM 5 and D4 libraries (got this disc from eBay and it is
good quality, organised and edited)
Akai 2000 percussion sounds.
New York City drum works and percussion works
The only other drum sources I can think of would be to get the Mo Phatt
drums, Motif, Triton, Roland flagship module.
What I wanted to convey was my experience of drum sample libraries and
try to communicate what I think creates an extensive drum library
without too many repeat sounds.
This was so I can get more accurate opinions on what other goods
original content drum libraries are out there.
I know you are probably thinking I should shut up and use the ones I've
got. It's a habit for me to hear new drum sounds. Plus every record of
live or programmed drums inspires me to emulate that drum sound. One
day I'll be recording and producing real drums and trying to make them
sound like Gregory Isaacs 'Night nurse' album. I sock around the snare
coil I heard to get the dead reggae snare.
EQing is important.
I wish there were drum libraries of vinyl drums sampled from records. I
bought those eBay vinyl drum libraries and they are a scam IMO, many
repeats and faded so quickly there is no vinyl ambience making them too
clean. Oh well I can always sample my own old records, always fun.
What acoustic drum libraries are quality. I like the dead short sharp
reggae drum sound of the 70's. But most acoustic drum samples are very
open airy 80's rock style sounds. Maybe I could use the amplitude
envelopes to decay them so they are deader but that's not the same as
having a nice dead drum sample.
I really prefer breakbeat and vinyl drums most of the time because of
the grit and character. I want to get a tube processor to see if that
iimproves clean drum samples to sound more like a record.
It would be good to have drum libraries that have dry punchy reggae,
disco, funk, rock, soul drums like from the late 60's early 70's. I do
have 'retrofunk' or whatever that sample cdrom is called. Haven't gone
through all of it yet.
Yeah I want 60s and 70s drum production.
Roman.
I don't know how fast your internal drive is, but you might want to consider
a fast external FW drive for your samples if you're using the disk streaming
option. Hey, and maxing out the RAM is always a good idea.

Lenny

I had this problem with the Old Lady also from PMI.
It was fixed by opening the preset up in the EXS editor selecting all
zones and using "update selected zones info from audio file". Then
saving. To test if this has worked you must unload and reload.
Everything has been fine since then.
You definitely need to have virtual memory on in the EXS.
Hope this helps.

hi ive just spent a while making some basic static wave samples sampled to
root note C0, so i can use my EXS as a wavetable synth.
BUT.....
they screech and stutter and scream at the high notes. i think its called
aliasing but i just want it to stop!

Know the feeling! =)
It's more then just aliasing, to be precise, but no matter what, the
interpolating nature of playing a sample to a higher pitch then
originally recorded is tricky.
Are you composing your static samples manually; i.e. with a wave
processing/creation program? Then create some samples at a higher
pitch within that composition program, and create a multisampled
program within the EXS24. Place the higher samples at higher ranges;
that way, the "original" samples don't have to be played at such a
high range away from it's unity pitch.
If you are dealing with recorded samples, still, go into a powerful
sample editor and see what you can do in raising the pitch up a
certain level. Sample Editors can be more effective in this then the
real-time processing of the sampler itself.
Some samplers refuse to raise the pitch of a sample higher then a
certain range away from the unity pitch, Kurzweil's limit is 24
semitones, I think Giga's is the same or it's 36 semitones. After
that point, the sample is simply played back as the highest possible
pitch. But most samplers keep raiding the pitch, sometimes with awful
sounding results, but sometimes it's OK.

In case you think it might be useful, I also made a mapped instrument for
the orchestral kit map included in the jam pack #4 "symphony
orchestra"...
http://tinyurl.com/jlpq4
Over the course of 18 months of not working with a particular set of samples
and some careless `housecleaning' on my HD, some of my EXS24
instruments can no longer find their samples. These all seem to be from one
set: GIGA. The instruments are intact, with the original sample zones,
layerings, key range, octave settings (...etc.) I set up a year and a half
ago, but
now, as I say, most of the samples can't be found. I SEE them ALL in a
partition on my HD; most likely they were moved in one massive, ignorant
clump -in a fleeting moment of madness- months ago, when I wasn't thinking
about the consequences of such an action.
Now I've chosen to return to these instruments, but when I reload each
missing sample, some of the instrument settings change, and I'm faced with
reconfiguring all the instruments manually… all the layers on several keys
per
instrument… and there are a LOT of instruments.
I have 2 questions to anyone who is out there:
1) Is there an easy way to facilitate each instrument finding the new
location of
each requisite audio file… or are there any tricks anyone can suggest that
would make this operation less time consuming? Is there any way –for
example- that I can point an instrument to a folder to re-find an initial
sample,
and then have that instrument look to that same folder to fill out all the
subsequent sample positions?
2) When a missing sample IS re-found and re-loaded manually, what settings
DO change on the EXS24 instrument, and is their an easy, seamless way to
`show' the instrument the new location of the sample?
While I understand that the problem is simple: each instrument has it's own
set of instructions as to where each of it's samples resides, in my case, it
may
well be that the samples are organized into the same subfolders... it's just
that
I've probably `organized' them by putting them into a new 'GIGA' sample
folder… it will be irritating to have to manually reconfigure 2000+ samples.
Does anyone have any ideas?
I use Logic 6.3.3.on a Mac G4 with 1G Ram.

here is a list of frequencies for equal tempered scale:
http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/music/et.html
it should be easy - some scratching my head later - to compute the
periods:
sample rate is 44.1 hz/s
c1 is 130.81
my measurement with test oscillator reads 1675 for 5 periods, which
is 335
computing seems that easy:
