SATA is a faster *bus* than PATA, so it can handle more data. But you
were never saturating the bus with PATA; the important issue for
streaming samples is how quickly the drive itself can deliver the
data. The best hard drives are WD Raptors, which are 10K RPM drives
with a seek time 50-60% of a regular 7200 RPM ATA or SATA drive's
spec. They do deliver a few more voices.
However, you're asking whether a hard drive is a substitute for RAM
access, and it clearly isn't. If EXS forces OS X to start pretending
the hard drive is a RAM buffer for loading sample starts, you're
going to get crashes while the machine swaps that data into RAM.
Memory is thousands of times faster than any hard disk, and the only
way to pay samples is from RAM. Streaming samplers store the bulk of
the samples on the disk, but they still read from the RAM buffer.
I've avoided using the term "virtual memory," because EXS uses
(misuses?) it to mean sample-streaming. People aren't usually talking
about EXS when the general term - they're talking about the OS
running out of RAM and using a temporary hard disk buffer that it
swaps out.

understood. Just wondering why a dual G5 1.8 with only 512M Ram (it
was a store loaner) was able to run tons of EXS with so little
RAM...and no audio glitching. OSX was obviously in a low RAM
situation....
anyways it sounds futile...just have to wait for higher RAM capacity
in future macbooks...sigh...

Nick's overview was absolutely excellent, let me add a response...
It's all about efficiency.
The over-simplistic/basic concept of the EXS's playback (and
basically all "streaming" samplers) is that the first part of the
sound is loaded into memory, thus creating as small as possible
memory footprint for the instrument. Since memory is instantly
accessible, your initial sounds can be played. The program is
continually checking if it needs to load stuff off disk if the
playing "threatens" accessing sound data that isn't in memory yet.
Also, the program may elect to dump things out that were loaded
post-load that hadn't been accessed for awhile.
It's not that different than when RealPlayer first came out and you'd
constantly look at that little "buffer meter" and you could see
when
RP would have to download more data off the Net, or even have to stop
playback because it didn't have the data yet.
Think of a non-streaming sampler like Reason NN-XT and think of the
memory that never gets used, or even the memory that isn't used in
2-3 seconds of time and you see how inefficient that is.
The ultimate sampler would always have the sound data in RAM that's
needed for playback AT THAT MOMENT and ONLY that data. How many mb's
of data is actually being sounded at any particular time? Perhaps
only 5mb per second, on average, I don't really know, but it can't be
too huge. Certainly not even close to 32mb.
It's efficiency that is the crucial thing, not the sheer amount of
memory. Lots of memory just covers high stress situations and
less-then optimally efficient samplers. You can have a 5-lane
freeway, but they get completely jammed when there's cars driving in
parallel at 45mph.
So, regarding the 1.8 dual with 512mb, perhaps that it was playing
was efficient - no piano sprawls with pedal, spread out sparse
orchestrations, and of course the efficiency of EXS24 in general.

Greetings,
There is a sample library that I'm considering that guarantees compatibility
with the following formats:
" It was formatted on an AKAI S2000 sampler, and is 100% compatible and
guaranteed to perform as intended on AKAI S2000, S5000, S6000, and Z-series
samplers."
Will this import into EXS24?
Thanks,

As long as it's on a CD, should be fine. If it's not, you can get it
on one easily too.

With Logic 7.2.1, I'm using some SampleCell instruments that were
originally imported into Logic 4.8 EXS24. Then, I moved that fully
working EXS24 folder over to my new Mac.
Many of them play perfectly, and I can watch as the samples quickly
load into the EXS24.
However, when I access some instruments from the menu, I get no error
msg, but no samples are loaded - and ".exs" is appended after the
instrument's name in the menu.
I'd think if it couldn't find the samples, it would ask me where to
find them?
How can I resolve this?
I too would like to know if you can use the EXS the way that Sampletank
works...... allowing you to change pitch and time independently///???

No, that's a SampleTank exclusive feature, called STRETCH. EXS works
like all other samplers do, just playing back a samples and faster or
slower rates.
The STRETCH feature in SampleTank takes a sample and can raise the
pitch using formant conversion, so the sample changes pitch without
changing length and also removes the munchkinization. The tradeoff is
in latency and sound quality, but in most cases it's pretty good.

I am running Logic Platinum 6.3 on a Mac G4 400 and I am having a problem
with the Path References when I start up Logic.
Logic crashes when it gets 98% of the way through reading the path
references. When I go to the Project Manager window to stop it I cant...And
of course I am in the middle of a big project....
Anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this problem?
Thanks
Recon
I found the solution to my own problem.
In case anyone else ever has this problem.
The solution is to go into your preference folder and delete a folder called
Logic PR and that should solve your problem..

Suggestion: it's generally a good idea to remind people what you're
talking about. People don't memorize mailing lists and have no idea
whether you had hemmorhoids, this was a spiritual matter (paths?), or
EXS couldn't find something. :)

I was wondering if anyone can help me figure out how to resolve unresolved
files for some of my sampler instruments in the Project Manager. I've been
unable to resolve the tools in the functions menu, included the automatic
resolving function. The Audio files are on an external hardrive.
Instruments that I've recently installed have not trouble, but one's that
have been there for a while (including the factory Instruments in my
HD/Library/App supp/ Logic/ samp insts) can't seem to resolve. I would love
some help. Thanks

Not necessarily but you can ask him. He was the one who posted that

I am trying import a rex file into the esx 24. I open the sampler then I hit
edit and then go to instument and then say recycle convert and now all the
options are greyed out, so now I cant select an option. What can I do to
make these options selectable? Please help?
Thanks
Hi
On my G5 (OS10.4.3) + Logic Pro 7.2.1:
You need to move the REX shared Library:
It was in HD/Library/Application Support/ REX Shared Library
Move it to:
HD/Library/Application Support/Propellerhead Software/REX Shared Library
The above workaround is ok for my G5, but NOT my Macbook Pro!
You may need to contact the nice fellows at Propellerheads support and ask
for the Universal Binary REX Library!
REX Import now working on the MBP with Logic Pro 7.2.1 and Logic Express
here!

I have a piano instrument in which I want to have groups selected by
controller. I have a bunch of sustain layers in place selected by cc64, but
I would also like a 'una-chorda' layer (the left pedal) selected by cc67.
While I'm sure I can accomplish this by keyswitching or the like, I would
prefer just to use the default left pedal assignment on my piano controller.
Unfortunately, once I have created a 'select by' group for sustain pedal, I
don't get an option for any other controllers. Any ideas?
best, Nathan

Hello-
just received Steinway D from PMI and cannot get Logic to recognize it.
I've tried installing the entire Steinway folder in

How to set things up so that the piano is available in EXS?

You do not need to put the whole folder in
Users> Library> Application Support> Logic> Sampler Instruments
Just put the EXS instrument/s in there (the samples can go anywhere)

Going further, the EXS instruments can be anywhere as well, but they
must be "connected" to the Sample Instruments folder via an alias.
For example, if your .exs files are in a folder called "PMI" on a
drive other then your boot drive, make an alias of that folder, then
move that alias in the Sampler Instruments folder. The folder will
then show up in the EXS popup menu.
That way, the EXS can find any file anywhere on your system, without
putting any actual data in the Sampler Instruments folder.
What I do is I have an alias to the Sample Instruments on my desktop,
and I just drag fodler aliases in and out of it at will. I also have
a Sampler Instruments (disabled) alias so I can control how many
things exist on the popup menu, I just shuttle the aliases back and
forth as needed.

Hello, i would like to first say thanks to everyone in
the forum and thanks for all the helpful pointers I am
truely appreciative. I would still be using a PC if it
werent for you guys (just a joke). Here goes, I have
just cleared my hard drive of everything includeing
my sample libraries, in hopes to start fresh. I've
decided to upgraded my operating system from Panther
to Tiger and just reinstalled Logic 7. My question
is relatively simple how do i get my prized sample
libraries back into my exs 24. They are all backed up
on cd's and are akai format. Thanks Kevin Denton
Hello EXS people,
Thanks for the responses to my letter re not being able to get Steinway
D to appear in EXS.
I figured it out - I had installed the 24 bit steinway only. When i, in
addition, installed the 16 bit Steinway in the proper place,
everything was available in EXS.
Now I'm using the "basic" Steinway OK.
It's "good" but not quite good enough. I think need to tweak some
parameters in EXS to get the richness i want. Also, it's a little too
dry to me. I tried adding Logic reverb and it seemed to kill the
presence a little.
Apart from that I'm having a ball with it.
If anybody out there has experience with PMI keyboards and can suggest
how-to-tweak, I'd like to hear from you.
Thanks,
larry
