Subject: [EXS] Free EXS Music Box samples from Bolder Sounds
Message #15251
Hello EXS users, At the Bolder Sounds site is a FREE sound bank for the EXS 24. It is entitled "Music Box". What was sampled was actually the mechanism of a music box mounted to a glass top wood table. I've noticed that samples of music boxes are relatively rare and now I know why - they're very tricky to sample! The file is about 11MB zipped and 13 MB unzipped. The samples are 24 bit stereo. Go to http://www.boldersounds.com/free.aspx Hope you find this sample set useful! Dennis @ Bolder

Subject: EXS 24 Waveform Editor
Message #15252
Greetings, I'm currently using Logic 6.4.3 and am thinking of upgrading to 7. One thing that would clinch the deal for me would be if Apple would develop a waveform editor for the EXS. Does anybody know where this is at? Seems a little archaic to have Ensoniq Mirage style editing in 2006. Cheers

Subject: [EXS] ULTIMATE 8MB RAM EXS24 SYSTEM
Message #15253
THE ULTIMATE G5 8GB RAM LOGIC SYSTEM I want to build the ultimate 8GB RAM Logic system. Klaus Bidault says he sold his 20 Gigastudio Pcs and now just uses a Mac G5 for all his samples. How can one Mac G5 replace 20 Gigastudios? On the VSL forum, Steve Von Kampen posted results of trying to utilize all 8MB of RAM he had in his Quad using 4 MBs for Logic 7.2 Pro/EXS24, and 4 MBs of stand-alone VSL VIs, but found that the VSL VIs leaked ram. Is there a way for one G5 Quad with 8MB RAM or one G5 dual with 8MB RAM or two linked G5 Duals (each with 4Mbs RAM) to fully utilize all 8Mbs of RAM without leaking? Has anyone tried: 1. All Logic systems, including Logic Pro 7.2 can only utilize 4 Mbs of RAM, running 128 EXS24s. Anyone tried using 4 Mbs RAM to run Logic with 128 EXS24s—and the other 4Mbs RAM to run the EXSP24 sample player as a stand-alone VST? 2. THE EXSP24 is a VST--which is limited to 16 MIDI channels. Anyone opened several instances of the EXSP24 stand-alone using IAC to access 128 MIDI channels? 3 Both the EXS24 and the EXSP24 are extremely efficient RAM users. Has anyone built an EXS24/EXSP24 equivalent of the VSL Vis that used only VSL EXS24 samples (not the VSL Vis) – but didn't leak RAM and could fully utilize 8Mbs of RAM? The VSL Vis basically offer 144 cell matrices. I've never done it, but has anyone built one single EXS24 instance with 144 modulations? So you could have one EXS24 instance with 144 string modulations one EXS24 instance with 144 Wind modulations one EXS24 instance with 144 Brass modulations one EXS24 instance with 144 Percussion/other modulations This takes advantage of the EXS24 uniqueness as a sampler—it only has to load samples once, so: a. you could load one Full Strings sample from Garritan, VSL, Sonic Implants, and just using that one sample set tweak them via modulations 144 different ways. OR: You could build one single super EXS24 instance with: STRINGS: 32 modulations via controllers BRASS: 32 modulations via controllers WINDS: 32 modulations via controllers PERCUSSION, ETC: 32 modulations via controllers This would be one super EXS24 instance that functioned as a super sampler. I'm thinking aloud, need your help: The VSL Vis are nice but expensive, Kontakt 2.1 has excellent scripting, Gigastudio VST will be interesting—but the EXS24 is the most efficient sampler because 1) it only has to load an instrument and sample set once and 2) you can combine hundreds of EXS24 instruments into one super EXS24 instance and have an unlimited number of modulations. Appreciate your thoughts, comments. J. Marti

That was his theory, but it turned out to be nonsense - an intelligent-sounding term that meant very little in this case. I'd like to help you set your system up, but with all due respect it would take too long to explain everything all over again. Please look at that same VSL thread where I explained how much RAM you can access on a G5 for the 15th time. If you have any specific questions, please ask them. I'm not trying to be rude, but it would take 20 minutes to wade through your post. Subject: [EXS] ULTIMATE 8GB RAM LOGIC SYSTEM
Message #15257
Nick, We're running some tests now. Specific questions to you: 1 What's your experience with EXSP24? Is there a way to run it stand-alone? 2 What are the advantages/disadvantages of using it outside of Logic as a way of exceeding Logic Pro 7.2 limit of 128 EXS24 instruments? 3 What's your experience with building one EXS24 instance, with say, 24 different STRING articulations. I now realize the VSL VI are way more powerful than the EXS24's modulation possibilities. Might make an interesting article for your magazine-ULTIMATE 8MG RAM MAC SYSTEM or ULTIMATE 16MG RAM SYSTEM. A lot of composers want to design a single or dual Mac system. You have written more about this than anybody: what is the ultimate system, Nick? Appreciate your thoughts, comments. J. Marti

I Don't know how well it works in practice, but I just tested the old idea of running two instances of logic simultaneously... you cannot run 2 instances of Logic 7.2, as it comes up with an error message, saying another user has that application open.... BUT, you CAN run one logic 7.2 pro and one logic 6.4.2 Pro simultaneously... but you have to make sure that the Logic 6 version doesn't try and open a Logic 7 song or autoload. other than that, you can load sample libraries into the two quite happily past the 4GB limit overall.... each one is still limited, but the combined total goes past 4 Gb ( i have East west platinum libraries (largest 2 of each group) and some big piano libraries, and BFD, and so on loaded as i type. 444 Logic Pro maxhodges 22.90 16 2.80 GB 3.47 GB 1,842 205.91 MB 2.69 GB 1:09.41 409,709 296,568 413 Logic Pro maxhodges 52.20 35 1.45 GB 2.04 GB 351 115.69 MB 1.46 GB 14:52.09 1,239,761 437,696 I haven't time to get really silly with it.... But in both Real and virtual memory these two instances add up to over 4GB. and no crashes yet.... the system used is a Rev A 2x2GHz PPC G5 , with 6 GB of DDR 400 RAM. can't speak about audio quality, as it's past 2 am here and i'm NOT in a soundproof studio room, just working in my home office/work room/studio.... under my kid's bedroom. Likewise I haven't really explored Midi and audio communication yet, but I guess OSX Jack could move audio between them, and IAC midi would be fine.... I wonder if this might also be another solution to the issues being had by those with Quad core g5 PPC machines unable to wring the maximum grunt form their investments? I'm not a vienna user yet, but saving hard towards it ! Max

A lot was written about this a couple of years ago. In reality it's not a very stable or workable system. You run out of CPU, and it's generally a PITA to use. Rather than assigning them all to tracks, though, I create a screenset with the Audio Environment with all the EXS24s on one side and an Arrange window on the other side; command/clicking on one of the EXS channel strips assigns it to the currently-selected track in the Arrange window. You don't need so many tracks that way, but your articulations are still cued up so you can audition them and assign them as needed. > Might make an interesting article for your magazine-ULTIMATE 8MG RAM > MAC SYSTEM or ULTIMATE 16MG RAM SYSTEM. Unfortunately, the ultimate system still requires more than one machine, in fact it requires more than two machines. There's a fine balancing point between eking the most out of every machine and asking machines to do too much (in which case you wait too long for things to load and sometimes run into slowdowns and glitches). > Appreciate your thoughts, comments. > J. OK here goes... I'm an experienced Logic User. I use the EXS mostly from what clients bring in in project folders and the factory pre-sets ..not a whole lot of digging into it...Last week or so Logic had a hiccup and crashed..Ever Since then many of my preset EXS instruments do not play--Logic cannont find the samples. And samples stored (as fas as I can judge, correctly) in my clients project folder will not open either ( or they open with the sample as a pure sine tone or white noise)..My Project manager sees the sampler instruments and the samples but no matter what find function I use within the project manager it cannot find the unresolved samples..it see's them there in the project manager but they will not load into the sampler instruments..so none of my clients EXS sample instruments work--some of the EXS instruments ( but not all) also load up witha "MISSING" next to the sampler instrument title inside the EXS GUI... What the hell is going on here? Can anyone shed some light on this? All the time that this goes unresolved is costing me business. Any Help would be greatly appreciated! please send any responses to bassjunkie8@yahoo.com

Hi all , new to the list... I'm trying to import a lifetime of Zip 100 Akai sample disks into my Mac Quad/Logic Pro/EXS. Unfortunately the Akai formatted Zip files are not recognised at all by the Mac, the only option given is to reformat! I've tried to find the BitHeadz Osmosis program mentioned in earlier threads (2001) but the company appears not to exist anymore. You can use a third-party format convertor, which is always helpful (Translator or CDxtract), or you can use this tip. I'm not sure what Logic version you are running and what OS version, but Logic sees Akai CD's but not ZipDisks. So the goal would be to make a CD out of the Zip. Here's how, assuming OSX and you have Toast. (However, from you post I kind of assume you are using OS9) Use Device Copy on Toast to make an image of the Zip - and image is nice because then you'll have a backup. Choose the Zip as the device, then go File-Save as Disk image to make the image. You can then either make a CD of the image using Disk Image (drag the new image into the pane) or you can just do it off the Zip by clicking the red button when you are in Device Copy. Toast 6 (not sure about 7) does not have Device Copy, so you can use Apple's Disk Utility. After you've inserted the Zip, run Disk Utility and you'll see the Zip in the list of peripherals. Choose the Untitled thing under it, and go File-New-Image from rdisk4s1 (it hmay look a little different). That's how you make your image. Then use Toast-Disk Image to make the CD. After that, use EXS to view the Akai CD. Logic 5.5-6.0 OSX did not include Akai import, though. If you are using OS9, you can use Disk Copy or Toast to make your image. Toast 4 or 5 will work. Try CDXtract or Chickensys Translator. One of those 2 programs should be able to do what you want. Fernstudio
