Message #15026
Anybody know how to make this function work? I want to use the EXS as a loop player for live use, but I can seem to get the 'hold' function to work in MONO mode. I set it up as DEST=HOLD & SRC=VELOCITY, but it doesn't seem to work too well. Any thoughts?

Not true - although Kontakt can do it, it can't be streaming. I don't think HALion does it (could be wrong, can't check at the moment). I don't think MachFive can do it, nor EmulatorX. And not Giga. >Alternate loops are extremely useful. exs look real limited without it. Well, maybe - however, you can simulate this by creating one and then turning it into forward by flipping the loop data and appending it to the end of the loop. But of course, creating tat bidirectional loop isn't too possible in current sample editors. Garth Hjelte Sampler User

Subject: [EXS] loop smoothing
Message #15031
Hi all Does the EXS24 really not offer loop smoothing? I'm finding clicks in lots of instruments ported over from S-760 even though the loop points are the same ( or displaced by one sample in some strange cases where that has happened in the porting) and although the basic timbre of the loop sounds possible, how do you get rid of the clicks? In the S-760 (of 10 years ago???) the loop smoothing worked beautifully. Regards Brian

That encludes the Yamaha models, the EMUs, the AKAIs... Now with RAM getting real cheap I don't think software developpers still waste tiime on finding a solution: The recorded chunks are so long that you don't really have to loop anymore... Cheers Jurgen

But... >That encludes the Yamaha models, the EMUs, the AKAIs... Don't mean to split hairs, but I'm not sure right off about the Yamaha, but the Akai and Emu DO NOT do it. Kurzweil, Ensoniq, and Roland do. I'm talking about a loop type that goes from loop start to loop end, backwards from loop end to loop start, etc. in real time. I'm not talking about processing of the sample data not in real time. >Now with RAM getting real cheap I don't think software >developpers still waste tiime on finding a solution: >The recorded chunks are so long that you don't really >have to loop anymore... No, you have a point. If simple waves have to be elongated it's a huge waste of disk space, even though disk space is more than it used to be. But then, given a 7 second sample, the crossfade could be imperceptible and forward loops can be done. Still, to us old timers, an alt loop isn't brain surgery, so it is nice to have it on at least Kontakt. Garth Hjelte Sampler User

You should be able to do that in the sample editor. But I agree it could be useful at times. Kontakt includes the patch selects; although once they are in contact it's sort of assumed you aren't using an Ensoniq as a controller, although it's probably a good idea, with the patch selects and the polyphonic aftertouch keyboard. I have an Akai CD3000XL. It can load akai, emu and roland discs. I can even send it whatever my Mac can convert via MESA. I also use Logic Pro's EXS24 which can load any audio file and import akai CDROM's. Can I use MPC2000XL format. I'm suspecting it's just wav files. Roman Pirie.

The .pgm file holds a pad/MIDI note setup, not unlike an .exs file It can reference a .snd file - just a sample file for older MPC's or a .wav file. The MPC format, disk and file, is completely different than the S-series sampler format, so EXS with it's native utilities can't load it. Garth Hjelte Sampler User

Subject: Creating EXS files from WAV samples - Logic Express
Message #15043
Dear moderator, I realized I posted this in the wrong forum. Kindly forgive newbie faux pas. Hello all, I know that the stripped down version of Logic, which I have, has EXSp24, whcih doesn't allow you to create instruments from samples. I have some vocal samples (the Sony library) that I would like to trigger from my Midi keyboard. a) Is there way from within Express where I can do that? I don't think so, but it's worth asking. b) Are there any open source or freeware utilities that can help me create them? I don't mind assigning keys to wav files manually as I won't be doing much of it. c) the local music superstore reccomended Mach5, sampletank, or battery2 but these things are pricey. Help!!!!! Thanks very much, Alexmania

Subject: Insufficient privileges
Message #15046
Hello, I am using Lacie Big Disk Extreme to stream my EXS samples. On my Power Mac it works well, but on my iMac I regularly get the old insufficient privileges chestnut. It's not read only etc, it's not disk permissions. Within the same folder some files will work and others won't (it's mainly my Vienna Symphonic Library stuff.) I've been told that sometimes Logic screws up permissions in the OS itself through some sort of bug. Does anyone know if this is true, and if so do I have to reinstall Logic? Would that even work? I know other people are having this problem but no one has given an explanation that doesn't insult the intelligence of the complainant! Ash

Hi Ash, Strange that some files in a folder do work and some don't. Have you ever tried to enable <Ignore ownership on this volume> ? (Maybe individual files are locked or have slightly different permissions) Another suggestion: are the EXS instrument files on the iMac resolved properly? Simple ideas, no offence intended..... :-) Regards - Colin

The OSX get-info window button that applies permissions to enclosed items often does not work fully. I have no idea why that defect is there but it has happened to me. I was able to solve it with this free program: BatChMod download from: http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/ This program can set permissions for folders, groups of folders, and also apply the permissions to every file within the folders. It's a unix script with a graphic interface that accesses capabilities hidden in OS X. If you use it, be very careful to read and understand the documentation and make sure you are doing exactly what you intend to do, since it can change permissions on many folders and files at once. - Dave On Jan 22, 2006, at 12:31 AM, forums@logic-users.org wrote: > Message posted by Ash <akaikatsurakun@yahoo.com> > ______________________________________________________________________ > > Hello, > > I am using Lacie Big Disk Extreme to stream my EXS samples. I need three MIDI switches that have one in and two outs with a switch that can choose the destination of either output. So if I had a master keyboard outputting into the MIDI switch in then I could switch between the two outputs. My searching on the net found Phil Rees and Kenton MIDI switches. They are both discontinued products. This makes me think the need for MIDI switches has changed over the years. I need three of them. Roman Pirie.
