Now, I use Logic 7 but I very rarely use the EXS24 sampler. I use MOTU's MachFive 99% of the time. It's much easier for me to edit with. Triton, Fantom-X, and Motif ES sounds came on a total of 20 DVD's!! That's right 20 DVD's; approximately 80gb of sounds!! I went and purchased a Seagate 400gb IDE Barracuda drive for $265 US for future Flossmode sample discs. I'm using a Mac G4 Dual 1gig Quicksilver which won't format a drive larger than 137gb so I had to purchase a Sonnet Tempo ATA 133 card to make use of the entire drive. When I loaded keyboard patches in the EXS24 in Logic I couldn't get the release time shortened on some them, which I'm sure was because of my lack of knowledge of the sampler and it's editing capabilities. However, in MachFive, I shortened release times from 1.33352 tp 1.33351 on some patches and Bamm!!! The sounds are off the chain! I mean natural sustain, killer drums, basses, percussion! Getting over $6000 worth of synthezizers for $300 USA plus shipping is incredible! Because this is such a bargain everyone should buy their own and not copy these discs or trade them. This guy is going to be the "new sampling guru"! Have you tried the Motif Next Level Soundfont Demo? If not, register on www.flossmodestudios.com and download it and convert it with EXS24 or Motu MachFive and get blown away. You may want to email or call him and get the scoop on what he has to offer because some of the sounds that are available aren't on his website yet. I'm Luvin' em' and I'm sure you all will too!! So let's go buy em'! Randy

Well, that seems circular, as I'm right now wondering how long it will take for Roland, Yamaha and Korg to get wind of this "business plan." >This guy is going to be the "new sampling guru"! Once again, I registered on their forum to hear the posted demos but received no email confirmation. The demo links from their tiny handful of product pages just 404 out. So I guess I'm 100% s.o.l. Bottom line: If they can't keep a VERY simple web site up to date, how am I supposed to trust them on anything else? Btw, how did you find out so much about them if I can't? Yeah..

> I'm so confused: How can this be legal? There's the rub - technically it is not... it is, in fact, totally illegal and in most courts or law across the world could be prosecuted under various copyright laws and laws relating to 'unfair trading'. It's the audio equivalent of of taking images from the latest movie blockbuster (say 'Narnia' or 'Harry Potter 4') and running off T-shirts to sell at a car boot sale (or, indeed, on a website). It is also pretty much the equivalent of copying/sampling any of the major sound libs (Garritan, VSL, East-West, whatever) and selling those as 'your own'. Think about it for a moment: Korg, Yamaha, Roland - whoever - spend $1.5 millions developing a new product (including teams of sound designers across the world making new sounds for it). The product price is set according to projected sales in order to recoup those substantial R+D investments. It goes into production and hits the streets. And then some twat like this come along, samples all the sounds and sells 'em for peanuts. Not only that, this one brags that you don't need to spend $2,500 on the original keyboard; $14.99 will get you the lot!! Hmmmmm! To be honest, I believe that promoting this Floss product here is contravening the fine and upstanding policy regarding piracy that this forum upholds. Think about it for a moment: I doubt anyone would report user/tech problems regarding any 3rd-party sound lib (such as the aforementioned Garritan, VSL, East-West, whatever) that had been similarly ripped off. In fact, I doubt the message would even make it up for public consumption... the rigorous moderator would censor it! It's no different. Furthermore, many of these companies have teams of legal eagles looking out for such contraventions - Floss could be in serious trouble if/when found out. He could be slammed with (at the very least) 'cease and desist' orders from the company's attorneys, could be charged for copyright convention of their sounds, for using (even *abusing*) their registered trademark, etc.. I am sure the guy is acting in all innocence but what he is doing is technically illegal. Technically as well, anyone who subscribes to his products by buying them is complicit in an act of piracy of intellectual copyright. Best regards, Steve http://www.hollowsun.com

Until we can clarify that these sample libraries are absolutely bona fide, in accordance with our long standing list policy, we will not accept any further posts praising or advising people to buy them. Offering them under the names of current synthesizer products from major MI manufacturers certainly seems dubious. thanks and regards Mark - LUG Admin

Message #14983
Hi i'm a new logic 7 user and i'm having problems loading the exs samples in my logic session. I'm using a Mac G4 Powerbook with OSX Panther. For some reason, the samples won't load. I can locate the folder thru "Finder" but when logic attempts to look for the samples, it can't find them. Strangely enough, some times the EXS Samples folder is there, and sometimes it's not there. I tried copying the folder, and moving it to the local logic folder--nothing works. Anyone encounter this problem? I'd appreciate any help you guys can give me. Apple is no help. Thanks Selwyn. P.S. I have Logic 7 and Protools LE on the same machine. When I launch Protools I do get an error message regarding the EXS Sampler.

Thanks for responding Pete. I located the file path you mentioned. I can go to the folder and play each sample through Quicktime. However, Logic still seems unable to load the files. I have 1GB of Ram and 17GB of space left on my hard drive so it can't be a memory issue. Any suggestions?

Subject: [EXS] Maestro Grand as EXS - sample clipping
Message #14986
I originaly posted this message on the LUG, and have tested it out some more last night and think it may simply be a low memory issue.. Any thoughts on this? Any EXS experts out there? I was wondering if any members here has had success with the Maestro Grand GIGA file conversion? I got this file from Audioshots and it's pretty great sounding with the exception of sample clipping. It doesn't appear to be consistent on a particular note/velocity. This is a multi layered instrument across an 88 key range. I dug around and in the EXS manual, and determined I'd have to set the cross fade and a specific amount per zone. Is this true? or the right approach to cleaning up this sample instrument? The issue is that there are several hunderd samples! The Logic FAQs over at OmegaArts pointed out that I could in fact click the cross fade check box en mass with a lasso/key command sequence.. Now I'm 1/500th of the way there assuming this is the right approach to get this puppy to work right. Insights? Thanks for any input! Adam

Do you know if it's the samples themselves that clip? In other words, when you play the sample file itself in the audio editor, does it sound clipped or OK? If the samples themselves have clipping distortion, there's nothing you can do. On the other hand, if the samples themselves are fine, then I'd try just lowering the volume offset of the entire instrument. I seem to recall that if the volume of the instrument is set too high, you can get clipping on the loudest samples. I don't really understand why this should happen, because Logic is supposed to use 32-bit float throughout. Don

Hey Don, Thanks for the tips.. I checked out the samples, and they're all clean and long for that matter. Adjusting the volume of the EXS instrument didn't change anything. I threw on Activity monitor to see what was going on memory and CPU wise, and I did see it was un-usually consumed. I'm tending to think this monster instrument is just too much for my G4, 800Mhz, and 896Meg Ram. I really need a G5 dual proc of some kind with tons of RAM. Thanks, Adam

If the Giga import didn't properly convert the layers, it could be that all layers are sounding simultaneously, which could lead to clipping of individual notes.

By the way, I'm wondering where you found this piano. A google search revealed only a soundfont created by Mats Helgesson that doesn't seem to be available any more. I thought that if it's free, I could try to see if I could reproduce your problem, but I was unable to find this instrument anywhere. >Adjusting the volume of the EXS instrument > didn't change anything. I'm not sure I made this very clear in my earlier post. What I am referring to is the volume setting in the EXS instrument editor window. Is that what you adjusted, say to something like -12 dB, or did you adjust the fader on that instrument in the mixer? >I threw on Activity monitor to see what was > going on memory and CPU wise, and I did see it was un-usually consumed. > > I'm tending to think this monster instrument is just too much for my > G4, 800Mhz, and 896Meg Ram. Hey Don, This is good info, I'll check out the additional parameters in the editor.. Yes, I checked the overall volume only. Here's web site for the sample: http://audioshots.com/auditorium/ They ask to not give out direct links to their posts.. It's a pretty good place for free samples. Once you register search for: "Maestro Grand" in the "Large Files, Other Formats" forum. The thread called "Matt Helgenson Maestro grand piano" should come up. All said and done, the file un-zips to about a gigabyte. By the way there's an awesome set of drum kits out there by a guy named "Giro". The Kits are called "G&S Custom Works Drums Library". Sascha Franck created the EXS instrument. It's very playable. I'll check out everything you pointed out and let you know. Thanks a bunch! Adam

I'm using Logic Pro 7.1.1 on a 1.67 GHz PB, and the built-in Logic Giga conversion worked fine. I've tried using the full velocity range, and I can't get produce any clipping whatsoever. This piano is pretty nice for a free one, although of course it doesn't stand up to the Post pianos, for example. But pretty good for a freebie. Also, it doesn't tax the system much, so I'd think you could use it with your computer. I'm not sure why you're having problems. Don

Don, HAPPY NEW YEAR! Well, it's now working fine. Pheww..... I basically removed the samples, and sample instruments and started over. In the EXS instrument "Options", I found that the Virtual memory was not active, so I turned that on (that's a biggie, and quite frankly sort of embarrasing that I didn't know about it) I always thought that this was always on and not an option. Also under options button, the Sample Storage I set to 32 bit float. It wasn't set. Just curious, how are you able to tell if velocity-switching is working properly? Is there a way to monitor it while you're playing (future reference). I very very much appreciate your input and time you spent downloading and checking out the big sample instrument!! I was primarily using the EXS 24 for a few drum sample instruments I bought and basically didn't venture into all of the options and settings. Good news... I'm learning something new every day. Thanks to guys like you! Cheers, and again Happy New Year! P.S. I found a site that seems to have a few valid EXS tips for optimized operation: http://proapptips.com/tips/ Take care, Adam

Subject: Does Pro 7 library include all past sounds?
Message #14998
I am doing a clean install, and with the diferent arrangement and numbering of the EXS factory sounds, I can't be sure if the current Pro 7 library includes all the samples and instruments which came with previous versions of Logic. Anybody know this? Jimbo
