You could try opening the sample in the sample edit window and adjusting the loop points so that it doesn't go right back to the beginning when it loops. You'll see little triangular "L" markers in the sample edit window to do this. They look a bit like the start and end markers, but are meant just for setting loop in and out points. -------- Eli Krantzberg http://www.nightshiftorchestra.com Almat Productions

In addition, usually a bit of crossfading will be required to get smoother transitions from loop end to loop start. Experiement with different values and carfully listen to possible phasing problems during the x-fade. In general, longer loops will sound better, but if the sound changes much over time, they might sound unnatural. Finding and adjusting proper loop points on strings is a timeconsuming task... Have tried Eli's suggestments and missed exactly the later Sacha's answer about crossfading (to avoid the 'bump' between loop start and end), but since my inexperience in logic's sample editor (I used Peak in the past on OS9) I am a bit confused with saving my editings and other tasks: 1) How can I put a cross-fade between loop end and beginning? They are far away. 2) It's all the time a destructive editing, isn't it? 3) There are 3 types of cello attack modes mf, marcato and another, but they seem to responde at all at the same velocity values (0-127). How do I know what sample logic chooses when I play the part? I'm shure that it's a reklativly simple task, but please help me to save a little time. TIA Gianfrancesco

In the EXS edit window, right next to the "E" button you press to open the sample in the sample edit window, there is a box where you can enter a cross-fade values. It's all numeric, there is no visual representation of the cross-fade you are creating. It can't. Sculpture does not imitate natural instruments. It "constructs" sounds by mathematical calculations based on physical properties. Although Sulpture can produce the sound of several natural string instruments to some degree it is rather built to construct synthetic or impossible instruments like a glass cylinder plucked by a feather. Maybe you can imitate the sound of one Dobro string within a small fret range (if you get the parameters right) but you cannot expect to hear any typical playing technique. I think bending Sculpture "back" to produce natural sounds is, though possible, against its destination. > i have > yet to hear any good samples of this instrument I don't know of Dobro samples but I am pretty sure you will find some. If simple samples are not enough for you you might try RealGuitar. Maybe you can filter it somehow to get a Dobro-like sound, assuming that the playing style is authentic. Real Guitar has alternating samples and three types of noises (fret, release, body). You need a mid-size keyboard for that software. If RealGuitar basically fits and you play it in solo mode you could try to support the sound with metallic settings from Sculpture. Btw, it would not do any harm to the musical scene if you get a Dobro sound nobody else has :-) ___ Peter Ostry

He's an outstanding player (and a lovely guy) and I'm sure he would have done a great job. But the problem with dobro, slide, and, especially, pedal steel is that the standard keyboard/sampler setup is an incredibly awkward interface to reproduce what these instruments can do. I think it will take a rethinking along the lines of realguitar to make anything that sounds even vaguely realistic. Any developers out there up for the challenge? Best Wishes, Michael A. Subject: [EXS] Can the EXS24 II play AKAI and Giga Studio Samples
Message #14960
I have not loaded my Logic 7 yet into my MAC, as I am waiting on my DM3200 which is back ordered. In the commercial studio that I used to own and operate, I ran Logic 6 and had the original EXS24. My tech converted my AKAI Samples so theycould be used in Logic 6 and played with the EXS 24. So my question is, will I be able to play my AKAI Sample library and my Giga Studio Libray in the EXS24 MKII that comes with Logic 7?

Hi, EXS24 changed to the MKII moniker at version 5.something (please correct me if I'm wrong). In reality there should be absolutely no difference between the 6.x version and the 7.x version. the only thing that has changed (from memory) is the ability to rubber band stuff. Short answer.. No difference. Mike

This is actually very cool If you have two groups, set one of them to "select by group" then "start" in the box just to the right of this Set the other group to "select by group", and choose the first group in the next box. Message #14965
I have recently downloaded Express 7 on my MAC G4 10.3.9 and hardly any samples cannot be found anywhere in the sampler instument folder. So I downloaded a few exs and wav samples from the web, only to find the EXSP24 doesn't load them. I can see where the exs or wav samples are located, but they are greyed out and the permissions are fine. Can anyone pinpoint what is wrong here when i load these sample files for EXSP24, ESE, and ESP players, but doesn't recognise any of these samples ? Also, how to I convert OS9 fxb's for Express AU technology ? translator ? cheers

I've purchased a couple of kits from ModernBeats. Originally, I had to spring for their Vintage Drums collection, which is very good. Since then, I've tried a couple of their Hip-Hop kits and they are decent. The ordering process is slightly annoying for Mac users. Apparently, they have some ultra-paranoid Windows based system, and first-time Mac customers have to call in. Return Mac customers still need to wait for a special download link via email the next day (no late night download-able inspirations for you). But it works. My only usability complaint is that they provide completed kits for several samplers (Battery, EXS24, etc.), good good, but the individual sounds are given cryptic names so it's hard to cherry-pick and build your own. Subject: [EXS] REX Shared Library/EXS Problem
Message #14971
This is a reply to #14791.
Problem: I created a file in ReCycle to load into Logic via the EXS 24II using the Recycle Convert -> Extract MIDI Region And Make New Instrument function within the EXS' Edit page. I get this strange message when I try to load this REX2 file: "The REX2 file was created by a later version of ReCycle and connot be loaded with this version of the REX shared library. Please update the REX shared library, then try again." What is odd is that I worked in this same set-up yesterday. I also created a few REX2 files in ReCycle and they all loaded just fine using the same process. I am not doing anything differently at all and I have not updated or changed any of the software. I only use this computer for Logic + music ... It's not even on the internet. Also, yesterday's REX2 files will drag into an Audio track/channel in the arrange window and play just fine ... The one I created today will not. (I created a second version of the same sound and file in ReCycle with the same results) Here's what I'm using: ReCycle 2.1 build 229 Logic Pro 7.1.1 I'm on a G4, dual 1.25 GB OSX 10.4.2 Lots of RAM, and the track I'm working on is in its infancy so not a lot of CPU usage yet at all (and yes, yesterday's REX2 files were used in the same track) Any help is appreciated. I'm at a standstill here until I figure this one out. Thanks in advance ... M

Hi, I just received my Flossmode Studios sample discs of the Triton, MOTIF ES, and the Fantom X! These sounds are amazing! I've tried them with the EXS24 in Logic Pro 7 but it seems I have to adjust the release on some of them. However, when I converted them for Machfive the release times were better and actually easier for me to edit since I'm more familiar with it. However, can anyone help with info on shortning release times with the EXS24?

Did you get the 'next level' versions or 'unleashed'? 'Next level' is multi sampled and 'Unleashed' is just middle C sampled. I am curious how well these products work compared to the original keyboard. I realise that they are not looped. So a long sustained note is not possible like on the original keyboards. How long are the notes? Are the shorter percussive sounds like say a mute guitar sampled shorter. I just imagine the sampling may have been automated at a certain length. Are the drum samples edited. Some sample CDs have many seconds of silence after each drum. IOW the ends are not edited. I am planning on purchasing some flossmode sounds. If we trade then we could halve the expense. I am specifically waiting on a drums only collection which I have requested and have been assured will be available soon. It will have all the drums of all the flossmode products. But if I buy a couple of products like Mo Phatt etc then we could have the full products anyway by sharing. How much hard drive space does each product use? I am also a Logic 7, exs24 user. These products certainly seem exciting if they can provide the sounds of these flagship keyboards. What other comments can you offer me in way of a review of the sounds. How well do the patches perform? What is the sound quality like? I would assume for products these organised they would have a nice sound card and know about good levels etc. I see the Fantom X is only available as 'unleashed' this means the sounds are just one sample, middle C. I would assume these to be unuseable. Holla back, Roman Pirie.
