I have updated my old version of Logic 6 to Logic 7. I note that some of
the EXS instruments and samples that were in the Logic 6 version of EXS are
no longer present in the Logic 7 version. The "missing" data are
not
related to instruments and samples that I had added - but instead to what
came as "included" from Apple.
Does anyone know whether the "missing" instruments and samples
have merely
been renamed, have instead been inclued in the Garage Band instruments and
samples, or should instead be re-imported into the new folders?
Thanks,
I think they took out some good ones and added some new ones, plus
reorganizing the folders.
I like some of the ones from Logic 6, so I added them to my
SamplerInstruments folder and it works fine.

Greetings All,
The other day I opened a Logic song that I had been working on the
previous evening, opened up what should have been the EXS24 mkII only
to find that it had been replaced with an older version of the EXS24.
The EXS24 mkII is nowhere to be found in any projects where I had
previously used it. I have permanent authorization for the version of
Logic I'm running (Platinum 5.3/Windows 2000) as well as all of the
software instruments that were available as of that version.
Any idea what happened and how I can get mkII back? Thanks in
advance. John F.
Happy holidays samplers. This shareware bit from
www.iceaudio.com may be of
interest to some of you sample fiends. The shareware/donationware
program is
called Audio Finder. When you launch the program you can use it's
browser to
go directly to your audio files or use its Scanner to search for them.
You
can use it to extract samples from a file, you can rename them with a single
click. You can loop edit, beat slice, do a bit and sample rate
convert, AND it
has a cool function caled CONVERT TO EXS24 Instrument function. Neato!

Hi,
I need to use different modulator settings on sample groups within an
instrument. Every other sampler I know of allows this. With EXS24 it
seems like all settings are global. Please tell me that I'm wrong and
how it can be done in the weird EXS world.
Examples:
(1) I am working on a hurdy gurdy patch.
I would now want to activate the trompette (snare) with the pitch bend
wheel. The trompette should play when the wheel is turned up while the
midi note is played. With the pb wheel in neutral position it should
remain silent. All other Groups (melody, drones) should not be
affected in this way.
(2) I have a Xylophone that uses a dedicated resonator layer.
I want to control the resonator amplitude with the mod wheel. When the
wheel is turned up the resonater layer should get louder. The dry beat
layer on the other hand should not be affected by the mod wheel.
can this be done (using a single instance of the EXS)?
Thanks for any help!
regards
Andreas Sumerauer
I found one parameter in the group box in the editor view that don't
understand:
The 'select by' parameter has several options: note, group, ctrl, pb
I have alredy found out what the options note, group and pb do. (that
wasn't too difficult to find out ;-))
but how is the group option meant to be used? Thanks!

If there are any Vienna Symphonic Library (VSL) users/fans out there,
you'd better strap your jaw into place (to prevent it from hitting
the floor) and shoot over to http://www.vsl.co.at/
The Symphonic Cube has been announced and it's beyond anyone's
wildest dreams. It consists of a set of special Vienna Instruments
which look very clever, and remove EXS24 from the equation.
It seems that in order to retain backwards-compatibility with our
"old" VSL-EXS24 Instruments in Logic songs, we'll have to keep all
the samples and instruments.

I can't be the only one using Logic for this! :-) I use Logic primarily to
audition music I compose for live musicians to perform, mainly in the large
ensemble jazz realm. I'm having a heck of a time finding a decent
collection of EXS24 instruments to suit this purpose, specifically - trumpet
(with and without mutes), flugelhorn, trombone (with and without mutes),
bass trombone (with and without mutes), and saxophones from soprano to
baritone. From time to time I also need clarinet, bass clarinet, flute,
alto flute, English horn, oboe, & French horn. Strings (for this
purpose)
I've been able to find, as well as good rhythm section instruments, but not
good versions of the instruments above.
*Somebody* must have a collection of quality samples created for this
purpose. Any suggestions? Anything I've found seems to be orchestral, and
even then they don't include saxes.
Thanks - Bob
Hi there,
since 7.1.1 we have the nice feature off showing the name of the
loaded patch in the arrange window.
But what if I would like to go back to viewing the instrument name
instead of the loaded patch? Sometimes I load something called Mellow
Strings and then distort the hell out of it so I would like to see
Dist Lead and not Mellow Strings.
Anybody found how to turn that off?
Thanks for the help
Cheers

You can always double-click and type over the default.
If you save your preset with a new name, it should update....

Thanks Colin,
what I wanna get back is the track showing the Audio Instrument
Objects name instead of the name of the loaded instruments.
I know I can name the track, but that means I need to from now on
name two things the same: the track and audio object. Does this make
sense? I didn't think so.

I know the behaviour changed from v. 6. Now it seems L7 fits in both an
instrument name and patch name/track name (if one exists) wherever
possible, depending on zoom levels. Personally like the new behaviour.
But regardless, you can still easily get what you are looking for.
Change it in your autoload once, and then you'll never have to think
about it again.

Sorry Eli,
something changed from 7.1 to 7.1.1 and that's what I'm talking
about. I did like the fact that at a certain zoom level I could see
both.
But in 7.1.1 it changed to _only_ displaying the patch name instead
of the audio object name.
Yes, I can change the autoload. Yes, I can flip three switches...
(switching the track and instruement in the view in the arrange and
then the one in the track mixer) I just don't consider it wise to
make me jump through this hoop.
The problem are the 50+ sketches that are lying around that I draw
upon from time to time. So now when I open them, I have to first take
a couple of minutes to figure out what is where.
And yes, it isn't such a big deal and from now on I'll just keep
quite about it.
Thanks

..... when only the "track name" setting is enabled in the arrange
window view menu? Or do you mean specifically in the track mixer? I
never compared it back to back with pre 7.1.1 versions. But I trust
what you say is correct. I think I do remember now that the track mixer
display conditions changed in 7.1.1; but I don't remember the arrange
display conditions changing.

Yeah, that is a drag. You could try importing the screen sets from your
current corrected autoload. But that's also a few additional steps you
would need to go through. Six of one, half a dozen of the other, as
they say.....

Ironically I had a client here today (I do some Logic instruction)
asking specifically about this behaviour. And I was sure glad that this
little thread had caused me to investigate it a bit more closely over
the last day or so than I had before ......

There is a curious oddity with some of the factory EXS samples. I believe,
originally I installed/ updated everything correctly.
Short-story: basically the logic factory "clean electric guitar" -
cannot
find the samples...
Any way - here is the problem and solution - thanks to Andrea at Redmatica!

They're quite nice, btw. Allways wanted to say thank you but forgot.
However, as a package, Garritan Jazz seems to be quite good.
Just recently I've been lucky (err...) enough to purchase some left-over
"Kick Arse Brass" CD for the EXS (they're now only shipping
with a specialized but lousy playback engine), and even if I got it rather
cheap I'm not impressed. Not a single "allround" section
patch and only single instruments, so if you want to double your leads with,
say, another trumpet, you got no choice. And it even
becomes apparent if you do, say, a 3 part trumpet section that all the
instruments are the same. From what I seem to understand,
Garritan has made it just as with GPO, so there's multiple variations of
individual instruments available.
Just listen to the demos, there's not much yet, but they're not all that bad
IMO. Should work rather fine for background section
stuff and the occasional stabs. Not too sure about solo stuff when it comes
to them horns - but honestly, who would do a programmed
sax solo on anything meant to be serious? I certainly wouldn't.

These products appear to supply the sounds of various keyboards/synths
in sample format. I am curious how good they are. I myself usually just
flick through sounds on my Korg Trinity Rack until I find one that I
like. I don't really edit them. I usually only edit sounds on my Nord
Lead 2 or Logics software synths. I am using the supplied EXS
instruments alot these days. As I find them to be very high quality. I
would like to buy a big hard drive and fill it with quality sampled
instruments.
My understanding of sound libraries is that I can have sampled
instrument patches which have less sound parameter options because they
are samples. Or parameter patches for use with synths. I would love to
be able to select different synth patches for my Nord Lead 2 and Logic
soft synths and save and organise the ones I like. Maybe I just need to
learn how. Is there anywhere people share synth patches?
What other products do you guys recommend for giving me more sound
options. I'm into more funky organic synth sounds than harsh techno
stuff. I also like good bread and butter instruments. The EXS mute
guitar is way better than my Korg TR-Racks mute guitars.
Peace.

Hi!
Im' using cello (bowed) in a piece and I need some long notes. It happens
that they are
(shortly) too long and the sample loops from it's beginning during the last
(few) milliseconds,
so I hear the attack twice. In the "real word" if you play very
piano the bow is long enough to
allow this (the part will be played by a real player), but now the music has
to be listened by
my client, before it will "really" played. Which parameters should
I use (eg, temporaly, like
midi messages, or anything else) to allow long notes?
Thanks in advance
