As far as the file types go: Just rename them to .rar in case something went wrong with the download. To avoid this in the first place I think "save as" is your friend. RAR files can be expanded using the latest version of Stuffit or MacRar. - Sascha

After visiting www.hammersound.net and downloading a bass which is a .sf2 file compressed into a .rar format which opened with no problem, I placed it in the exs sample instrument folder as directed and the exs does not see it. Any suggestions. I'm on Logic 6.4.3. and have been told to get Logic Pro 7 but I'm not going to do that. Will soundfonts work with my system? What's up with soundfonts that some do and some don't work? Thanks Wayne

Here's a tip on renaming the files for any other users of these mappings. Renaming files is really fast if you use CK Rename. This little app is PC only but I guess the PC emulators on Mac would support it. http://www.musicsucks.com/CKSoft/CKRename/ If there is a Mac equivalent perhaps someone could post a link. I use A Better Finder Rename: http://www.publicspace.net/ABetterFinderRename/ It's a contextual menu plug-in that you launch after selecting the files to rename, then there's all sorts of options. Worth paying for if you rename batches of files often. It's the best "application" I've seen for this sort of thing on the Macintosh. There are others, but they are mostly RealBasic crapola. -- Mibrilane

Subject: [EXS] Soundfont questions solved
Message #14781
As to my resent dilemma concerning soundfonts, I found that some .sf2 files would load in the exs and some would not. The reason is that like Sascha had suggested for the file names of the drum kit 1 that he just mapped applied also to the filenames of the soundfonts that didn't work. Shorted the name and away we go... Thanks Sascha. Wayne

The manual says make a shortcut that points to you samples and place it in the LiabrayApplication SupportLogicSampler Instruments. I don't understand how to keep sampler instruments linked to the samples themselves. Can someone point me in the right direction please? Thank you most kindly, Strump

> I don't understand how to keep sampler instruments linked to the > samples themselves. Can someone point me in the right direction > please? The EXS will search for the required samples automatically and then write the new locations into the EXS patch file. It'll either search on all available drives or on one drive letter that you can specify in the EXS preferences. As the search process, depending on the size (and probably folder structure) of existing drives, might take quite a while, you might consider getting Redmaticas EXS Manager, which will reassign all "lost" (or yet "unassigned") sample locations way faster and in one go. - Sascha

I don't understand how to keep sampler instruments linked to the samples themselves. Can someone point me in the right direction please? Thank you most kindly, Strump On Mac,shortcut means Alias. When you install Logic & EXS,all the "sampler instruments" as well as the samples are, by default, installed in the Logic folder,in the applications folder, but,as your samples library will certainly extand to some Gigas,it's better to: -Move the "EXSamples" folder (as well as the "sampler instruments" folder) to a big and fast HD dedicated only to the audio work. -Create an alias of each of these folders and put them back in the Logic folder, they will act as pointers to the real folders. -You can even put your samples in different places,as long as you create and set up aliases. -The first time you'll open Logic and EXS after that the prog will scan your HDs to find the new direction to the samples. After that,it will find the samples automaticaly. Cheers, Alain

The first time you load the instruments after moving the samples, EXS will search for the samples. It usually finds them pretty fast. You can speed up this process by doing it in advance with the Project Manager (read about that in the manual). Even that method can be slow if you have many instruments. There is a third part program called EXS Manager, by Redmatica I believe. I've never used it but it's been recommended by other list members. - Dave

I agree; isn't there some list of well known "must-haves"? You might want to go back to the beginning and re-image the drive, ie, a complete reformat and restore of the factory software. Then install logic only and see if she''s stable. michael -- Michael Scheurer <www.msc.id.au>

If I were you I would buy a new harddrive and reload the OS and all applications and see how it works. Harddrives are cheaper these days and it is definitely worth a shot. If it doesn't fix the issue its not like the harddrive is a waste of money because you can never have enough space.

Hello. It seems like most problems with macs are the memory. I suggest checking your memory and replacing only with mac certified chips. I have had the same problems with my iMac G5 until I replaced chips. Guy

Hi Michael... thanks for responding ...I did it a couple times before.... first runs great and after a while (3-5 days) goes back to the same thing.... (what's interesting is that once when I've restored the system back to Jaguar unit was running perfect so I was actually about to stay this way ... but Logic 7 needs Panther so....again) but also when unit was set with Jaguar I have noticed that it freezes up a PC on the network where I was copying my Sounds Libraries from.... (after unpluging a network cable PC was back to normal) I'm suspecting a network cable or the router input now.... so I've changed both ...can't complain since then.... runs ok ... (5 hours) anyways ... would like to have some good diagnostic tools in any case so again does anybody know and could advise what is the best System diagnostic / Problem Solving software for the Mac on the market ... ???
