I love the Post 290 for jazz, classical, or new-age type stuff, but
even the dry version is pretty ambient and can be problematic in a
pop or rock setting. I like the Sampletekk White Grand for that, and
the Vintaudio C7 is nice also. And for melancholy stuff, the Art
Vista Malmsjo is great.
OK, I'm getting tired of my old repetitive piano samples.
Good point, so you've got a mac and logic, exs, soundfonts'n pluggins?
Collect instruments, like on Pete's site, start creating instruments with
Sculpture...
What do want to do? Arrange? Compose? Perform?
I do not see your point, what's a piano anyway? An ancient animal?
Mac and Logic are actually presenting us the opportunity to conduct the
orchestra in need

Hi Gang,
OK, I'm getting repetitive of my tired old piano samples. I've overused
the EXS's Yamaha Grand, which is a great patch IMHO.
Also Old (and somewhat Tinny) is my Prosonus Steinway Grand (AKAI disk)
What other great samples are out there that you guys would recommend
for me to look into to spruce up my Piano library?
I realize that a piano is a piano, but some different samples help the
palate of colours.
Thanks y'all

Hello EXS users,
Bolder Sounds has a free sound bank for the EXS at it's *new* website.
I've just finished up the Hammered Dulcimer Trilogy set for the EXS
24.
It includes a Cimbalom, Concert Grand Hammered Dulcimer and a standard
2 Course Hammered Dulcimer. There are numerous mp3 demos at the Bolder
site of this Trilogy. So this freebe sound-set is right in line
with that family of instruments.... this is the baby of the family.
This instrument is designed as a child's toy. It is supplied with a
guitar pick and some sheets that slide underneath the string telling
you which strings to pluck from left to right. Featuring such hits as
"Darling Clementine, Aura Lee" etc... It doesn't have a grandiose
sound, but it certainly is somewhat distinct. It's range is 2 octaves
in the key of G.
Music Maker for EXS 24
31 MB of 24 bit stereo samples. 24.6 MB zipped
http://www.boldersounds.com/
Feel free to write me with any questions you might have. Have fun!
Dennis @ Bolder
Sorry for the major screwup folks, but I did not include the EXS
instrument files with the zipped samples.
As soon as I get a hold of my web-wizard I'll get them posted as a
separate download (it's only 7kb zipped).
My apologies for the inconvenience!

Uh those dulcimers do sound good but the site says that they are NOT
free. Not horribly expensive, but not free.

I also wondered about that, then realised it's the "MusicMaker"
which is free.
To Dennis:
Thanks for the freebie. Your read-me says 31Mb of samples, but the
zip file expands to just over 25Mb. Is that right?

Colin,
I realized I took the sample size of the Music Maker from my Kontakt
version which for some reason is bigger. I'm not sure why though... I
must have edited out a sample or trimmed them more in the EXS version.
Thanks for pointing it out though, I'll change the info on the
website.
The next time I post a sound for the EXs it will be TRIPLE checked :)

Just to clarify things....
The Music Maker sampled instrument for the EXS IS a FREE download.
The Hammered Dulcimer Trilogy is NOT free.
So there are free sounds at the Bolder Site listed under FREE Sound
Libraries (many of them) and there are sound collections which are for
sale as well.

Hi All:
I'm wondering whether someone here might be able to help me solve a vexing
sample
organization problem.
What happened is that I bought 25 gigs worth of instruments and samples from
a
friend,
who brought them over on an external FW drive. I hooked it up to my
Powerbook
and
dragged all that stuff to my external FW drive. Then I took the instruments
off
that drive
and put them in this folder: /Library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler
Instruments.
Then, after I experienced a half-hour wait when loading one of the new EXS
instruments
once or twice, I went into Project Manager, selected the Sampler Instruments
folder and
chose "Find unresolved file references for selected items".
Initially, I got
error messages
along the lines of "you don't have permission to change this
file". I went and
changed
permissions on the relevant disks/folders, which solved that problem. But
the
instruments
and files remained stubbornly unlinked.
Then I bought EXS Manager from Redmatica, set it to relink the Sampler
Instruments folder
and the folder on my FW drive that contains all these new samples and let it
do
its thing.
Still didn't work.
Any ideas? I've read some confusing things in the LUG and EXS archives, as
well
as in other
places online, about putting aliases in folders, but I didn't really get it.
Do
I need to do
that? Tia ~ mike

Does anyone know how I can get a copy of the factory EXS24 Sampler
Instruments (and
related samples) that shipped with the first version of the EXS24?
Thanks!
Hi,
This is my first post to this group. I finally have a problem I can't
solve by either searching previous messages or by reading the manual.
I have Logic Pro 7.1 and GigaStudio Orchestra 3. Gigastudio comes
with two discs of samples from the Vienna Symphonic Library. On the
discs, the samples are stored in two folders, 16 bit and 24 bit.
Following the procedure in the Logic manual, I am trying to convert
these samples and instruments to the EXS format. I loaded the files
into the Sample Instrument folder in the Application Support folder
of my user Library folder. I open an instrument in the EXS, and it
converts the instrument and samples. Here is the problem. The
instruments in the 16 bit folder convert extremely well. However, the
instruments in the 24 bit folder do not convert correctly. The
samples convert just fine, since I can load them into the audio
window and play them. It is the instrument files that are getting
mangled. For example, none of the key mapping seems to be converted
correctly, since playing any pitch on the keyboard produces the same
pitch. Also, when the instrument is a violin pitzz., the sound that
results is a sustained violin. All the Giga instruments are bank
files. The structure of the files seems to convert correctly, since
the EXS instrument has the .bk ending and each bank contains the
correct instruments. Is there something I am missing in the
conversion process?
I have a 1.8 GHz G5 with OS X 10.4.2, 2 gigs of Ram. Any help would
be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

EXS24 will only convert Giga 1 and 2 sixteen bit files AFAIK. I gather
that Nemesys is not so keen on allowing conversion of Giga3 format files.
Hello everyone!
Just to say that I put some free drum´n´bass exs24 instruments

Please fell free to download and comment them.

Hi Michiel,
I updated the Emperor and used EXS manager. It still says I'm
missing a sample. EXS manager agrees. 31s emp A0.wav. Is there a
way to get this sample?

Hi everyone
Just wondering if anyone is using this drum sample collection with
the EXS24 mkII. Overall its great but i've had a few problems with
glitches in the samples. For instance, a click or pop that
occasionally turns up at the very ends of individual samples.
Or pressing a key to trigger one sample and having another one
trigger involuntarily during the tail of the first sample. There's
nothing wrong with the audio files as I can audition them outside of
Logic and they're clean. It seems to be velocity related too; ie,
doesn't happen with a soft press but a harder one causes a glitch.
The first one I could imagine could be a RAM or buffer problem, but
this happens when I have literally nothing loaded at all.
Completely empty song, only one instance of EXS and just pressing
one key at a time.
Anyone have any ideas? Could this be an error during conversion?
They are AKAI samples that i imported. I've trashed the whole lot
and imported again before, but didn't seem to make a difference....
could a file be corrupted??
Thanks, James

Hi,
So I'm mapping up some hihat samples. I want the closed hat to mute the open
hat (easy,
assign both to a group, voice count to 1).
However, I want to be able to play the open hat polyphonically as it sounds
much better.
There was a documented 'trick' from here a while ago that made this
possible, and I'm
trying to set this up but the behaviour of the EXS24 is strange.
The trick is this: add a new zone to play another sample on the same key as
the closed
hat. The volume of this sample will ultimately be zero but for now we'd like
to hear it. So
every time you play a closed hat, two samples/voices are playing.
Increase the number of voices on the group to two. Now when you play the
open hat, it's
two note polyphonic, but when you play the closed hat, as it plays two
voices it should cut
off any already sounding voices. You can increase the number of voices to
3,4 etc as long
as you add extra null samples to the closed hat sound.
Now this is all well and good, and seems to work for loads of people, but
not here. With
the 2 voice example, if I hit the open hat and leave it to ring, then hit
the closed hat,
instead of the open hat stopping and the two closed hat samples playing
instead, only one
of the closed hat sounds (the lowest zone) and the other sample clicks. The
open hat
keeps sounding until it decays.
The EXS24 is not reassigning voices that are currently sounding in order to
play new notes.
Is there something I'm missing to get this working?
This is Mac Logic 7.0. This behaviour is the same in Mac Logic Pro 6.4.2 and
also exactly
the same in PC Logic 5.5.1
SO it *must* be something I'm doing wrong, although I haven't a clue
what...?
Many thanks for reading and help would be appreciated.
This is really frustrating! *Every* synth/keyboard etc I've ever known will
cut off old notes
in order to play new notes when the polyphony is low.
I'd be grateful if anyone could try out this:
- create a new instrument, and load it into the exs
- create two zones on c1, one shot
- create one zone on d1, one shot
- load in two short samples to the c1 zones, make them different enough so
you can hear
that they are both triggered. a closed hi hat and a kick sample are good
- load in a longer sample, an open hat or something
Set the EXS24 to polyphonic, and set the voices value to 2, so we have
2-voice polyphony.
Ok, now when you play a C1, you will hear the two-sample layer, and the
voice display will
show two while the note plays.
When you play D1, the voice will show one, as D1 plays one sample/voice.
*Now*, and this is the kicker:- Play a D1, and then while it's decaying,
play a C1. What in
my view should happen is that the older note (the decaying open hat) should
be cut off in
order to play the C1 which requires all two voices to play.
But in 5.5.1 up to 7.0 here, the open hat continues to decay - the new C1
note is played
but only one sample/zone plays correctly, the sample on the other zone
clicks but is not
played.
So, does this happen for you? And if so, this behaviour seems to be wrong?!
And it would
make the polyphonic hats tip mentioned before that seemed to work for so
many people
completely wrong and not workable.
So, for todays' prize, what obvious thing am I doing wrong and how can I
have one of
those d'oh! moments and get this thing working...?
Many thanks,

Call Steve Jobs 1-800-NEXT-STEP
When I saw the word "prize", of course I took the time to check
this.
I can confirm your results, it's not the oldest note but I guess there's a
preference if a new note needs more voices - it'll only allocate for the
present requirement. It's almost "newest note" but not quite.
BTW, I tried this with the global voices and the group voices params.
So it's a bug in the EXS IF Apple claims oldest note behavior. Otherwise
it's part of the feature set. Your workaround would be to merge the samples
together and stick with 1-voice normal cutoff behavior.
