Well, if you have a deadline of today, I strongly encourage you to call
Emagic Tech Support. If you are in the States, use 10-10-220 because it's so
cheap and the hold time could be long.
1) Have you tried bouncing with another song? Could your autoload song be
messed up?
2) You could temporarily drag your Logic Preferences file out of the system
fold and to the desktop. When you launch Logic it will act like it's
launching for the first time and ask some questions (but you don't have to
re-auth EXS24). Set up your EXS24 and paste in the midi track for it, but
nothing else. Then bounce to disk.
Sometimes the Logic Preferences file gets weird and that's one of the first
things emagic will have you do if you call them.. It happened to me once and
it fixed everything.

Mark

Subject: Re: [exs] oldee to Logic, newbee to EXS24--basic question
Well, yes, I only *wish* this worked, but for some bizarre reason
it doesn't. I must've tried this thirty times before I decided to give
up and post the question to the list. Yes, this should be the way
it happens--but it doesn't and I'm going crazy trying to figure out
why.
Everything else is fine. I'm currently working on sound effects for
an animation company. Everything else bounces/saves/etc.
fine--except when I create something through the EXS24. It just
*won't* allow me to take the sequence I've created, play it with an
EXS24 sample (in this case, a frog sample--I'm making the of
them sing--don't ask. . .), and then save the result so I can get it
out to the client. I'm starting to have "this is what I get for putting
away the hardware sampler and working on the road" thoughts. .
.
There must be *something* not set right *somewhere*, as
everytime I hit bounce on the MF, I get a "nothing to bounce"
message in the bounce window. There *is* quite a bit to
bounce, though, and I'm having a horrible time trying to find out
what's telling Logic there's nothing to do.
Hence my problem. What should work, doesn't. Any
suggestions? I've got to get this figured out by the end of the day,
or I'll have to do one note at a time through the Time and Pitch
Machine and put it all together the long and difficult way
<shudder>. . .

Mark, this is an old message. The situation has been resolved.

The only app I know that can do this on the Mac is BitHeadz Osmosis.
You can convert Roland S760/S770 to SampleCell format, which then can
be imported by the EXS. you can get a demo from their website..
good luck,

I have been able to map aftertouch to the EXS using environment
objects (instrument->fader->exs) with good results.
But I think that EXS v2 could use native support for aftertouch (and
possibly foot pedal, breath controller, etc.) in some sort of
modulation source-destination matrix. Roland and Kurzweil have done
this quite nicely in hardware, of course, but it really is the key
difference between a sample-playback device (EXS) and a synth-sampler
(i.e., Roland XV-5080).
It is always a delicate tradeoff between simplicity and depth, but
without broader modulation options, the EXS cannot really shine as
a "performance" instrument. I still LOVE it for sample playback
though (it is the PERFECT Groove Control sampler!).
Just my 0.02, of course.

The two programs that do it are CDXtract (www.cdxtract.com) and Translator
(www.chickensys.com/translator).
However, you have to bend your knee and use Windows (hence a PC) or Virtual
PC to run these, wince they are Windows apps presently. Both promise a Mac
version at some point.

Just joined the list, and I'm wondering if anyone here has tried the emu
to exs conversion in cd extract.
Just curious how well this works and what glaring omissions there are in
the exs programs,
(besides the obvious lack of filter types and matrixing that are
available on the emu)
BTW if this is a discussion that has already taken place at length on
the list, please let me know when and I'll see if I can find it in the
archives.
Thanks

Translator does this too, but must be run on Virtual PC (4 recommended).

In the meanwhile, RAM has never been so cheap,

yes Andrea , but in term of CPU use, Streaming is better ( the streaming use
the poorest CPU % !)

That's right - sorry, I forgot that method. I usually don't think of 2-step
translations right off.

I agree with that. I often use a breath controller for winds and
reeds - it's easy and natural to create a good performance.
I suppose one could dig into the environment of Logic and transform
aftertouch info to modwheel, or breath into velocity but it would
certainly be easier if these parameters were built in.
Maybe in Logic 5.0 ?
Regards - Colin
I love EXS and it has absolutely changed the way I work, but I have
to use Unity DS-1 (or hardware) for my breath controller because it
has excellent breath /aftertouch/other controller support.
So it is being done with software samplers.

Thanx to Mikey Z and Garth H for the Roland conversion tips. I'll try
the Osmosis demo ASAP. (Still a little leery of Windows
emulation for now, tho!)
enjoying the cool toy,

It turns out it's not as "yikes-y" as it could have been. I just
updated the software from 4.7 to 4.7.2. . .and for some
inexplicable reason everything is peachy keen now. I can now
specify the measures to be bounced.
I don't understand it either, but I'm *happy*. My froggies are now
singing "Down by the old mill stream."
Thanks to *everyone* for the help! I'm new here, but I think I'll
stick around for a while.

I have a question about drum mapping..
If I'm in the EXS24 'edit' window, select new, then select 'Load
Multiple Samples' I then select several .WAV or .AIF files to load,
then EXS asks me how I want to load them in and I select "Drums".
By
default, EXS puts all the sound files on C3, so I then open each
samples' Window, assign it the next key over, click "Disable
Pitch",
and move on to the next sample. So a kick drum is C3, snare D3, open
hihat E3, closed hihat F3, and so on. Is there a way for EXS to do
this automatically? Or do I need to change each one manually like I
have been doing?
Thanks,
Mark
Use "Chromatic" instead of "Drum". Last I heard, this
was only available on
the Mac.

Actually, the entirety of this particular project will be accessible
online in the near future. I'll send an update with the url, etc. in
the future if anyone's interested.

Hello,
I do a lot of theatre composing and sound design and think that I do
have a kazoo sample somewhere. I'll see if I can find it. I have male
and female, by the way.
Cheers,

Hi...
I just subscribed today and I am not personally a musician, but I did
used to work at a very cool community radio station in Olympia,
Washington called KAOS Olympia Community Radio. Our station gained
international fame for creating an independent music policy,
basically that 80% of all music played there should come from
independent artists or those on labels not controlled by the "BIG
6"
music companies, which I guess are now the "BIG 5" or even less.
If
you ever want to check the station out, the url is
http://www.kaosradio.org .
Also, I have a couple friend in Gent, Belgium who owns a cool musical
instruments and recording equipment pro audio & music software store
called "The Soundfactory". Their store is really nice and what I
find really interesting is that they accept international orders and
have clients from across the pond and beyond. So I would like to
leave the URL in case you are interested in reading about the store
and what they have available. Just go to: http://www.the-
soundfactory.net . They also have another store associated with The
Soundfactory called The Guitar Shop and of course The Piano Shop
too. You might find it interesting to read their COMPANY PHILOSOPHY
to get a better feel for who they are and what they hope to
accomplish with their customers. I'll leave their address and
phone/fax/email information too:

Hope you find the site interesting. If you have any suggestions or
comments on it, you can write the webmaster, who is Ignace. His

Is it possible to have the same sample in two different zones.
If a sample is already used in a zone then it doesn't seem to be available
to use again.

Hum, that's true ! when u choose a sample , it disappears when the list...
For the moment u can do it if u do a Copy of the sample with and add a
letter ( SnareA--->SnareB) ...
That's the only solution I can see .... someone else on that ??
