Subject: soundfonts
Message #14151
I found a free soundfont online with the suffix "sfpack". When I put it in the Sampler Instruments folder, the EXS wouldn't "see" it. I changed the suffix to sf2 and the EXS could "see" it but not open it. Is this "sfpack" format compatible? thanks tom

They are in exe format for two reasons: - They're made with WinRar which gives excellent compression rations. - Everybody will be able to open them on Windows machines, no need to have WinRar installed. For Mac people, Stuffit and MacRar will open and extract them fine. - Sascha

As far as I know, there's nothing for OSX (or any other Mac OS) dealing with them. So you need a Windoze box to extract them to SF2. - Sascha

Before I answer - so your name is Thomas Hammer? Ha! Go to hammersound.net - probably the most significant soundfont site on the Web, run by a guy named Thomas Hammer. Small world! You have to "unpack" it with a program called SFPack. You can get it on hammersound.net, look for it in the FAQ. it is Windows only though - if you only have a Mac (horrors!) send it to me or refer the link to me and I'll decompress it for you. SFPack and another related one were compression utilities that seemed to be necessary at the time, before RAR and other ones came out that did a more effective job at compression than ZIP. They are obsolete now, and I wish the sites would eliminate .sfpack files and reload them as .rar. Garth Hjelte Sampler User

Subject: Convert Akai disks in Logic Audio 6.3
Message #14161
After many years of using EXS24 under Logic 4.8, I just purchased a copy of Logic 6 for OS X that contains EXSP24. I'm finding that the Akai disk converter isn't working. Under OS 9, I remember having to install an older extension to get the converter to work, but assumed that this would have been fixed in OS X. The disk just doesn't show up when I open up the Instrument editor and click on Akai convert. Is there something else I need to do?

Anyone having a problem with exs instruments suddenly being out of tune? Seem to be a bit sharp. It's been happening on and off lately. Starts out fine then it's out. Happens with various instruments. So it's not the one sampler instrument, it's a global thing. Logic 7.0.1 and Panther 10.3.9. Just started happening. thanks tom

Have you reset the song settings to be using a microtuning (rather than vanilla 12tET)? see: http://www.lucytune.com/midi_and_keyboard/pitch_bend.html for details Some of the .exs files that I have come across are wrong, but this will only effect those with errors for specific samples. Hi Tom, Way back I would have said that you're probably using a cracked version of EXS24 (bad tuning was a known symptom) but I certainly won't do that. :-) I've had odd instances lately where my whole song plays about a semitone too low, for no apparent reason. Playing live gives the correct pitch - problems only occur on playback. I found that quitting Logic, then logging out and back in again fixes this problem. I have no idea what causes it...... Regards - Colin

Hi Micke, I'm afraid I do not know a solution for this, but I can confirm the problem. After finishing a project I only installed Old Lady this week. I have exactly the same problems with randomly cut off sounds. Could it be lack of memory? Though I have the feeling it should be enough. I have 2 Gig on my G4 (2X1G). In the EXS window make sure that the number of voices is set to handle the number you're feeding through it. I think the default setting is 16. for a piano part you'll need a lot more than that. don't forget that if the pedal is down they polyphony just keeps adding up. You may be experiencing something like track stealing. julie

Subject: Unable To Play EXS24 Instruments Installed With EXS24(Logic 7.01)
Message #14174
Hi, I need help with the following problem: I created an alias to the sampler instruments folder and placed it where the sampler instruments folder normally resides in the main Logic Pro folder. The alias points to an external firewire drive where I installed all the purchased exs24 instruments and associated samples. I can load and play any exs24 instrument existing on the external drive but when I try to load any of the instruments installed and supplied with Logic Pro, nothing happens. My question: is this caused by the fact that the alias for the sampler folder points to the external drive and the Logic supplied instruments reside on the main drive and not the external drive? If so, can I move the Logic supplied instruments to the external drive? What would the procedure be? As a side note, I have ExsManager and am wondering if this can all be solved by running the program to re-link the instruments and files. But that brings up another question: can ExsManager be run over more than one drive at a time, specifically the configuration I mentioned above? thanks, Arthur

Since Logic 7, this is no longer the place for the sampler instrument folder(s). One needs to be in the global library - application support - Logic folder (for the factory instruments). And any non factory instruments need to be in a sampler instruments folder in the user - library - application support - Logic folder. Alias' should work fine, once you have installed them in these proper locations. > I have ExsManager and am wondering if > this can all be solved by running the program to > re-link the instruments and files.
