Hi folks, a general problem, but an EXS issue anyway... Exporting song data as an .aiff to disc, the name of the file is not recognized, the file is named "Audio-Track001.aif", consecutive files are ignored... Is this an OS X bug or a missunderstanding?

Subject: Questions about sample CDs
Message #13955
Hi, I'm considering making my first purchase of EXS-24 format CDs of acoustic samples. For those who have gone there already, I have a couple of questions.... 1. Can I expect that the samples in sample CDs like, say, the ProSamples series (which lists 5-7 formats, including EXS-24), will come with EXS-24 instruments already configured? Or will I have to fumble with the zones myself? http://www.soundsonline.com/sophtml/details.phtml?sku=PS31 2. I'm finding the ProSamples advertising relatively persuasive, and am considering getting their 'Rare Ethnic Vol 31' and 'Orchestral Brass Vol 20'. If anyone has these or others in the series and can offer comments, or can point me at other good sample CDs of acoustic instruments that they've used, I'd appreciate it. thanks steven rowat

Hi Steven, My experience with the ProSamples sample sets has been great - I own 8 or 9 sets and have also purchased several of the full sample sets from which the ProSamples line is derived. They are always top quality and I have never had any compatibility issues. Follow the instructions for loading the files and you will be good to go! The offerings in the ProSamples line are choice excerpts taken from full sample sets put out by East/West and others. I'm pretty sure you will be very happy with anything you purchase in the ProSamples line. Good luck! John F.

Tom, You need to be persistent about it PUBLICLY (not in a personal message), at Northern Sounds at this url: http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f That's the only place that you're going to get the attention you need. If you can't get assistance there, you're out of luck. -m > Has anyone contacted Michiel about the stereo image problems with the > Old Lady? > I would imagine quite a few list members have it. > I am keen to know what he is doing about it, but he has not replied to > my last email so...

Subject: Multichannel setup of the EXS?
Message #13959
I am wondering how to use the sampler in multichannel mode. I assume it's the best way to set up drum kits in the sample. It would be nicer for different parts, ie snare, bass, hats etc to come out on different channels to independantly control. BTW am new to the list so be easy on me ;) Thanx people

Set the Multi EXS up on a track. 2. In the EXS editor, do your routing to the EXS's multiple outputs for your sample patch.. 3. In the Environment window, create AUX tracks for all of the EXS inputs you will be using. 4. On each Aux track, you have a box to select its input. You will see in the menu Instrument # (whichever track the EXS is on) and this should then have a list like EXS 1, EXS 2, EXS 3, etc.. Just assign em as you set em up in the editor youre good to go.. Hope that wasnt too confusing its still early hehe. -- Chris http://www.descentrecords.com

Dear fellow exs24 users, I have a problem which I will explain in this example: Lets say i have a bassdrum (zone 1) and a snare (zone 2) in one instrument. and i would like to have a reverb over the snare. then how do I set that up? I've tried to send zone 2 to output 3-4 and not the main ouput. but nothing happens. And if i send it to output 3-4 where does it go? If anyone can help me with this problem. You would make me a happy man. I use logic 6 by the way. thanks. Ge

In the modulation router (bottom of the EXS), assign "Dest" to Filter Cutoff, then select "Ctrl #1" (which would be your ModWheel) in the "Src" pulldown and drag the slider right from them up/down, depending on whether you want positive or negative cutoff modulations (middle position is allways equivalent to the actual cutoff button setting). - Sascha

You can buy a CD from the site and get the Vintage Collection bundled free. It uses Chicken Systems' Multi-Format Installer that will allow you to install the collection in EXS format. These haven't been crudely batch processed but hand tweaked for EXS by fellow list member and all-round good guy (and EXS luminary) Sascha Frank. See: http://www.hollowsun.com/cds/index.html Best regards, Steve http://www.hollowsun.com

Subject: Bolder Sounds
Message #13969
Awhile back I was looking for dulcimer and cimbalon sounds and I came across this site http://www.boldersounds.com/sow.asp I found what I was looking for but unfortunately only as a Kontackt file. I have since ordered Kontackt but I also got in touch with Dennis Burns (who runs Bolder sounds) and asked if he had any plans to make any exs patches. He just got in touch with me telling me that he has exs patches now too. I bought the library earlier and have started using with Kontackt, and now with the exs, and I am very happy with it. There are also some great free sounds on his site. I took some of the loops he had posted, renamed them Laundry Loops, and converted them to Apple Loops. It's a good site and Dennis is a great guy to deal with. Ok I know this sounds a bit spammish but if you are looking for some good free sounds as well as a killer Cimbalon & Dulcimer samples check out his site. I also found another site that has some free Zither sounds (among a host of others) http://www.herman-witkam.com/raw I've talked to Herman and he's a great lad too!

Second, you should look at CDXtract. It's a very useful app which does conversion between different formats, and can convert Kontakt patches to EXS24. Very useful when your desired format does NOT exist.... Regards - Colin

Subject: Re: Best piano
Message #13971
I haven't been reading this list for a week, but the two best ones I've heard are Post Bösendorfer and Ivory. All three pianos in Ivory are miked fairly closely, so they're good for a "pop" sound, and the way they're mapped to the keyboard is outstanding - very playable. The Bos is recorded from two positions, but both are fairly ambient; it's just outstanding for a concert sound, and it blends well with sampled orchestra. It's also softer. I bought it after hearing a demo, and I don't regret it. These two really raise the bar above other sampled pianos I've heard; for years the one in the Kurzweil K250 piano (which was done by Joe Ierardi, the same guy who did Ivory) was my favorite. But I haven't heard SampleTek's White or Black Grands, and Art Vista is coming out with a new piano soon that sounds great - I got to play with a very early demo version a few months ago, and it has a lot of charm. There is no "best" piano, since they all sound different. Each one can sound very wrong or very right, depending on the context. -- Nick Batzdorf - editor Virtual Instruments magazine (the world of softsynths and samplers) www.Virtualinstrumentsmag.com 1-877 VImagzn (846-2496), 818/905-9101, cell 590-9101

Yes sometimes you wanna upright piano sound, instead of grand... what kind room/micing... i.e. classical concert sounding piano or close miced jazz or pop piano. Every genre has different preferred sounds.I will check Post bendorfer as well as ivory. thank you

Beautiful sample in a variety of settings. I also like the White Grand a lot, as it's bright and dry and works better in a pop or rock setting. The Vintaudio C7 is also very versatile with three recording perspectives, and Vintaudio also has a very nice upright. The last piano I have is the Art Vista Malmsjo---a must-have for all us Thomas Newman fans.

Yah I have heard of CDXtract (can't be a member here and not hear about it eventually) but until now I have never had a need for it. Usually if there is a sound I need I can either get it as an exs file or as a wav file and program it myself. This time I thought I'd ask the sample store (Bolder) as I was on a job and needed it quickly (and there aren't a lot of Cimbalon samples out there). CD extract would have come in handy, but as I had already planned to buy Kontackt 2 anyway (for a whole lotta reasons) I decided to do it sooner than later. The post I made about Bolder was more about letting people know about them now having exs patches than anything else. Still, I will seriously think about getting CDXtract, in case it happens again. It certainly would be cheaper than buying a every sampler out there eh? Cheers. David
