Subject: Old Lady stereo image problems
Message #13901
I have tried to contact Michiel again recently, and again no reply so... Could some of the other list members who have the Old Lady please contact him to see what is being done about these problems. It may help to get some response. I am keen to use this Piano, but it needs to be fixed! Many thanks. Tom

The octave switch of the ESM didn't show up either in Logic 6 but it worked. The solo button still doesn't send visible messages but it is controllable. In this case you know the message from my mail and you can test it: Just take a vertical fader, cable it to the instrument. Set it's parameters to Output: Fader Ch: 2 -1-: 5 When you move the fader in its lower range (0-12) the EXS-parameter should change. I used to have a bank of 127 faders to search and test parameters :) > Could it be that this parameter isn't MIDI controlled > in OS 9? And all the others are? Or is there some other part of Logic > that > has a way to activate it....? Nothing I know about; not when you cable a fader directly to the instrument. But there can be circumstances where you cannot control a parameter from your keyboard: Automation Quick Acces enabled or an assigned MIDI message in Key Commands. If controlling by an internal fader works but not with an external, these are the areas to check. > Or maybe, the Pitchbend in the EXS doesn't send MIDI, but receives it? > And > if so I should just continue with your instructions and it might work > anyway.... ? I think so and hopefully I am right... Peter Ostry

It's likely that this file came from a CD and OSX changes the file permissions when you copied it. The result code -5000 is an OSX error code, not a Logic error. To solve this problem, open the terminal and do a "chmod 644" on this file. Email me if you don't know how to do that and I will give you step by step instructions. The preferences are not correctly set and this can happen for any of a number of reasons. It is not necessary to go into terminal (sheesh... file that recommendation in "over-the-top advice for the pocket protector set"). Simply navigate to the file with the finder, click it once, then type Command-I. You get a little dialog box where you can set permissions to "read and write okay." Do this, close the little box, you're set. Bob Vandiver Bob

Subject: [EXS] Instrument's won't load - Library overload ?
Message #13916
Hi all, I'm experiencing a weird situation with the EXS24MKII: About half of my Sampler Instruments won't load anymore, unless I reduce the population in the "sampler Instruments" folder. Here's my detailled description: My Sampler Instrument's collection contains about 40 sampler CDs converted in EXS format, plus the complete VSL Pro library. The EXSManager reports a total of 39 565 instruments. All my sample data is stored on a dedicated drive while all the intruments are located under "Logic 6/Sampler Instruments". I've used the Exsmanager to relink everything so samples are loading fast when calling any instrument. It's only been lately that I discovered that when browsing for instruments in the EXS24, from some point in the list and untill the end of it, no instrument would load at all. It's like having a complete listing of my Instruments (grouped by CD names), but only the first half of the list is usable (read loadable). Trying to load something in the second half simply does nothing. The EXS keeps the last loaded instrument. You may note that I only have one instance of the EXS24 in the song. I then tried to move away a big chunk of instruments out of the Sampler Instruments folder (here, all my VSL PRO patches were moved to a temp folder, out of logic's boot-up scan range). I did that just to see by curiosity if some "library-size barrier" limit was reached... When I rebooted Logic, the EXS24 would now load easily any patches that were non-loadable at first! That makes me believe all my Instruments are okay, but could be the list to heavy? Could it be possible that some limit exists ? I guess some of you guys have more Instruments than me... is that a known problem? It is quite annoying to move around Instruments depending on the need to load them in one song or another. Please note that this problem occurs on the 2 computers we have with the same patch collection mirrored on each station. (logic 6.4.2/ 6.4.3 / 7 in OSX 10.3.5 / 10.3.8 on 2 dual 1.8 G5s 4 GB Ram on each, Permissions repaired and disks verified) Any help will be greatly appreciated!! I remember using this sound on a record in NYC in the seventies. After much discussion and research we eventually synthesised it using an early Moog synth + a phase shifter + harmonizer, and did it all pre-midi and analogue. There are prolly some samples around nowadays, but you need to emulate the pan and doppler effect to make it sound really authentic.
