I read here: http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?14@770.0SZdaAVkN3m.0@.68a56ce1 that one can make a 'single note' layered patch with EXS... then import that into UltraBeat... Sounds cool... Haven't tried it YET. rRand

Haven't tried it YET. ?? If you make a multi-layered "patch" or rather instrument in EXS24, it is just that - a patch. I still don't see how Ultrabeat can use this info. Does EXS24 have some secret way of creating a multilayered AUDIO file?

Hi All, Well... I am glad that the article made you chuckle - or even made you think perhaps... whatever. I am just glad it caused a 'reaction'. My email inbox has been overwhelmed with similar reactions to the article since it was published (it's quite flattering actually)!! I apologise for using Logic as the example - it could have been any DAW... Pro-Tools, Cubase, Nuendo... whatever - I just happened to pick Logic in the interests of brevity for the title. Certainly no 'diss' intended to Logic users hereabouts! But the underlying fact remains.... Let's not use technology to polish formulaic turds that satisfy a record company or radio advertiser's demographic... let's use it to push the boundaries and create something that is unique and original however uncomfortable that might be! When I was a lad, the underlying momentum when forming a band was to 'be different'. However, nowadays, the focus seems to be on being 'me-too' - to get a commercial slice of what some other manufactured act has established in the market.... the 'bland leading the bland' so to speak! Hmmmm... I feel another SOS 'Sounding Off' article coming on ;-) But thanks for your positive comments to the article. Best regards, Steve http://www.hollowsun.com

One step further, if you don't mind: We do not need to push boundaries. There are none. Who wants to stop a creative musician these days? We have the technology and the knowledge and we have more communication than ever. The distribution channels are right under our hands. And we don't have musical boundaries except the walls we build ourself. "I'm the best, I'm the loudest, I'm the fastest!" (Sometimes I feel more compressed than the music I hear the whole day) Who wins? The guy with the brand new vintage keyboard - an exact replica of the device Jo Zawinul threw away after ten minutes? Or the emulation of the Marx Brothers in the bath tube? No. We just didn't get the clue yet - but we are on the way... Peter Ostry

Funny stuff, Steve! I remember reading a couple of Roger Nichols articles in the 90's that described actual processes he'd gone through that weren't much less ridiculous than this. Interestingly, though he did poke fun at the fanaticism of Donald Fagen, there was a definite tone of pride at his (undeniably incredible) mastery of the technology. It is a fine line we tread today, balancing the necessity of understanding and taking advantage of the technology, with the basic desire to just make music and blow all that stuff off.

I already have a few clips but won't know if they're any use until i begin work next week. I'm putting together a therapeutic/hypnosis CD for a client and the only brief I've had so far is to find some seashore sounds to lay in behind his spoken words, he particularly wanted the high frequency sound which ripples across the beach as the wave recedes. More later, if I recover from the deep trance of listening too many times! Cheers, A.

This is an important, ambient issue and as I have stated, I've spent some time tweaking the Apple files with Logic's plug-ins and with some astonishing results... If you are still not satisfied, check this: http://homepage.mac.com/katsura/shareware.html#OCWV Besides doing hypnotic cd's, which in my opinion is an important issue, die to the dayly distortion of our fellow's brains... You might want to take a look at this: http://www.beelinetv.com/ Take a pair of headphones and listen to to the sounds behind the news, how it is done, how it is spread around the stereo field or even 5.1? Hi, I am writing a book on getting into Logic quickly through arranging and need some EXS24 sounds for the CD that will accompany the book. I need four different trumpets, clarinets, two tubas and one banjo. One each of alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax and trombone. Steve of Hollow Sun has generously allowed me to use his synth sounds. I would give appropriate mention and credit for the sounds. Thanks. Sheldon Sper
