I'm looking at getting the EXS 24 for my new logic/mac setup. I
currently use an Emu Ultra 6400 sampler.
I have some patches on the emu setup to cross fade between other
patches via midi CC from a pedal....these 'other patches' themselves
are velocity cross-faded. For example, I have four vocal patches
crossfaded (not switched, but crossfaded) on one patch, and moving
the pedal sweeps between these 4 patches.
I alternately use the pedal to send patch change commands to a single
midi channel...this allows me to switch between 4-5 patches in real
time with the foot pedal.
Can the EXS handle anything like these two scenarios? Can you think
of any way it could come close?
Thanks,
Stephen
I do not recommend use of the EXS for this kind of the thing. Only premium
setups have a low enough latency on MIDI input. Most users do experience
latency on input (output of course is sample-accurate). Sounds like a live
application. Stick with hardware if this is a serious part of your live
show. If you're only concerned about performance on playback, I'm sure you
can do something along these lines in Logic (don't think velocity-controlled
crossfades between patches will happen though). It's the mention of the
words "foot pedal" that raised an alarm in my head. This software
is not
intended for that kind of application. -Jer

Does anyone have a G4 Mac that has errors converting Akai
samples? I have tried to convert from many different Akai CD's
and am continuously getting errors. The errors take the form of
chunks of one side of a stereo sample missing. I've tried to
convert from many different CD drives and get the same
problem. However these missing chunks are never in the same
place......

Problem: EXS's AKAI conversion is not able to recognize AKAI CD's with
an additional audio partition.
This problem occurs with MacOS system 9.1 or later.
All the specific AKAI data on such CD's is simply hidden to the EXS's
AKAI conversion.
This behaviour is caused by a system extension called "Apple CD/DVD
driver" with version number 1.4.
Using an older version of this extension, e.g. 1.3.9 (the one that comes
with MacOS 9.04) fixes the problem.
Please note: the name of the exenstion may be different on non-english
MacOS systems.
PS included, you'll find a link where you can download the german
version of the extension "Apple CD/DVD driver" 1.3.9. It may also
work
on non-german systems.

As it stands, the EXS can't recognize an Akai/audio (mixed-mode) CD-ROM,
but there is a relatively simple work-around:
- Use a program like CD-Copy to extract the Akai CD-ROM section and save
it to your hard drive as a disc image file.
- Use Toast (or some other CD application) to write that disc image to a
CD.
- You now have an Akai-only CD-ROM that the EXS will happily read.

Yes, it works fine. As it stands, the EXS can't recognize an Akai/audio

Hi...
I need to trigger some bass drum samples (within the EXS24 hopefully)
from a convential Logic audio track (wave file) of a kick drum.
Is this possible within Logic?
Does it need to use a CV Gate or similiar.
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

it happens very often with "Copy".

Hi gang,
There's a new loop for EXS24 for download over at Spectrasonics.....

Dear Daniel
Thanks very much for you help. Everything is perfect

Good link!
I have high regard for Spectrasonics. Eric Persing was a major
programmer for Roland and you just have to listen to any of their
groove control discs to gain instant respect.
Obviously he likes the EXS24 - judging from the monthly loop in EXS
format among others.
Happy sampling

I couldn't find the latest one on the site. Any clues on the URL?

Murray
Murray,
Go to www.spectrasonics.net
I don't remember the subdirectories, but go into the 'Tune In' section, and
you're there.

Colin,
I saw that a few months ago and grabbed one, hoping to test it with
an EXS demo. Well, I just bought the EXS about 5 days ago (LOVE IT!).
Do you (or anyone else) have any idea where to find the "back
issues"
of Tune In? Did anyone keep these files?

Hi Scott, Colin and EXS users group,
Glad you've dicovered our hidden free sound of the month in EXS format.
(..and thanks for the kind words). There is purposely no "back
issues" of the
monthly sounds posted on our site. The point being that it is something
special that you have to "Tune In" each month to check out. It is
not legally
allowed to repost or copy these files. Someday we may release a full length
product that contains all of the back issues of the Tune In page, but for
now
it's just a special once a month thing. We admit that this is a terribly
nasty marketing ploy to get you to tune in to our web site each month. But
hey....it's free after all...not such a bad deal! The Tune In page lets us
release loops that are outtakes, special unique sounds and in progress
things
we are working on. It also allows us a way to demonstrate the powerful
Groove
Control aspect of our libraries online, without giving away loops from the
actual full length products.
We ask that everyone please respect our limitation of reposting and trading
these sounds. If it gets abused, we'll have to stop it. Since it takes us
years to develop and release our full length products, we'd like to continue
having this special once-a-month free "micro product" that keeps
people aware
of what we are up to.
Thanks!
Best regards,
Eric Persing

Eric,
No problem. I have nothing but respect for the work you do, and will
be happy to honor your request.
After I posted the message, I downloaded June's .exs and read
the 'READ ME'. Oops. It says right there "Please do NOT repost or
copy these files". Sorry.
Thanks for the great libraries! Let's see, I own DR 1+2, Liquid
Grooves, Asia, Retro Funk, Ethno-Techno...every one of them is
SUPERB! No...better than superb, INSPIRING.
Scott
Hi all,
I would like to test those sounds :o))
Where it is ??
Igor
Hi fellow users,
[I'm using LAM 4.7 and EXS24]
I recently bought exs24 and imported a number of akai and samplecell format
samples and programs. I notice that they import well and so was excited to
think I might be able to use Logic and EXS24 as a live performance
instrument, but now that I see how it works I wonder if this is going to be
reliable? I have found out that I can change AUDIO INSTRUMENTS by sending
program changes from my controller to a switcher which is then connected to
the various AUDIO INSTRUMENTS, but the newly selected instrument will only
sound if the sequencer is running. Has anybody found a way to change
AUDIO INSTRUMENTS with the sequencer stopped? (I realize that I could grab
a mouse and change the current track in the ARRANGE page, but this in not
workable in performance.)
John
