I am just getting into a mac G5
What is the best place to store large sample libraries (100gig +) on
my computer? should it go on a secondary Hard drive or the main disk?
Any experiences on a mac?
Get a second drive, never on the system disk (same for recording)
Serial ATA is the best (fastest drive u can afford the better)
External is possible, depending on ur latency tolerance and how many
instrument u are running
If external, fire wire 800 of course

Trying to catch up with 1+ month of LUG/EXS mail, but the new msgs
keep coming in faster than I can read them... Anyway, no-one seems
to have answered this one yet, so here goes...

If you need just a few of these split-setups, the easiest way is to
create custom 'split instruments'. Open an EXS and load the strings.
Click the edit button to open the Instrument editor. Now in the EXS
load the brass, and again click the edit button to open a 2nd edit
window. Copy all zones from the strings window (select all, copy),
and paste in the brass window. Save under a new name. Adjust the
zone lengths from the respective instruments so that brass and
strings don't overlap.
Before copying/pasting you might to make sure that both instruments
have all their zones assigned to a group (brass-group and
strings-group). These carry over when copy/pasting, which
facilitates selecting e.g. all strings-zones when you start adjusting
zone-lengths.
And alternative to the above would be: create a transformer, set it
to "Condition Splitter" and set the Conditions part to select the
lower note range (like C-2 to C3). Cable the 1st outlet into the 1st
mixer strip with an EXS (strings) and cable the 2nd outlet to a 2nd
mixer strip with an EXS (brass). In both mixer strips, insert an I/O
plug-in, and in the plug-ins, pick some input and output (don't leave
them at the default '---'). Now disable both IO plug-ins. Assign an
arrange track to the transformer. Put Logic in play mode, and you
should be able to play both EXS's simultaneously. Disadvantage: some
latency, and Logic has to be in play mode for this trick to work.
Other alternative: upgrade to Logic 7 and repeat the above trick,
leaving out the IO plug-ins. Seems to work. I'm not sure about Logic
having to be in play mode or not then...

Hi,
I've got a tape with smpte on - connected the signal
to my unitor 8. I would like to have logic listen to
the signal. Checked framerate and type, putted logic
in ext sync. But it doesn't seem to work ?? Is there a
way to see if the unitor receives the signal and how
can I get this thing to work ?
Thnx

I was just wondering about the groove or feel when you quantize in
logic! People talk about the AKAI MPC2000XL sampler and that it´s got
a
really good feel or swing! How can you achieve that in logic?
Thanks in advance

I think that's more like a question for the LUG, but however -
there's lots of quantization options, you should just fool around
with the extended parameter box to see what they're actually doing.
In case you want to "copy" the groove of an MPC2000 I could only
recommend trying to find some loops of it, load them into Logic and
use the "audio to MIDI groove template" function of Logic's time
and
pitch machine.
Alternatively you may want to load them into any loop slicing tool
(such as Phatmatik Pro, ReCycle or Intakt) and export the MIDI groove
from there into Logic, then make a template out of that.

In addition to the statement below, which is a really good/answer
solution. The main thing to note, is that it is the inaccuracies or
humanness of the MPC that gives it such a good feel. Linn drums had
their own feel, Roland's which were more perfect had their own feel. As
do actual drummers. I.e. if you analyzed the groove of a drummer you
love you would find that he/she is all over the beat. Maybe the kick
slightly ahead, snare a little behind, etc.

Try this. On an MPC (or any external drum sequencer) and pick a sound
like hi hat or rim shot and do a one bar pattern with the sound playing
EVERY 16th note. You will have a one bar pattern with 16 hits in it.
Cable midi out from device to midi in Logic and record the midi notes
into logic using the sending device's midi clock as master. Record 4
bars into Logic so the midi clock stabilises. In Logic, cut the 4th bar
so you have a one bar region in Logic with 16 notes in it. Do NOT
quantise it. Select this region and invoke "make midi Groove
Template".
You now have made an exact copy of the MPC's groove to apply to midi
tracks within Logic. Go back and repeat this process each time changing
the quantise in the MPC to different swing values etc. and you can
build up a whole groove template library in logic mimicking the feel
characteristics of any device.

Thanks for all the help!really appreciate it! Especially your tip there
Paul! Is it true that people buy an mpc just because of its groove or feel!
isnt there any other reason? Because if groove templates is something you
can import into logic and someone puts the template on the internet for
downloading , then it would seem pretty unessecary to buy an mpc for 1000$!!

this list might as well join that one too hehe.. :)

What's your point?
I'm Andrea appreciates the free advertising, but your post is pointless.
And where can they be found? Any help would be appreciated!

Any opinions out there on the White Grand vs Ivory for "harder edge
stuff"? Any other contenders for best rock piano?
Also - d'ya need a dual G5 to run the White Grand, or do some of you
have it working on older slower systems?
I've only got a G4/733, but I lerrrrve the sound of the White Grand rock
demos, and kinda like thumpin' the sh*t out of a piano meself... :-)
Thanks in advance, Bill Canty
Hi Bill.
You can download a full 2 octave + all the C’s demo for the White Grand
from <http://www.sampletekk.com/> www.sampletekk.com and try it out
yourself.

Ben,
Based on my past experience, I'd say call Emagic customer support.
They are suprisingly helpful. They came through for me when my XSKey
stopped working. Don't bother sending an email, though. You might
not get an answer.

Logic 7 has a built in String module that considering its just thrown in as
part of the package, is really nice.

Andrea,
My point is that these are excellent tools and I have many friends and
associates in music production using Logic that do not know who you are and
were totally unaware that these programs existed. Many people would
benefit from exploring the information I posted regarding your products.
Referral and recommendation are key elements in human communication
and successful business. You are welcome for the free advertising but I was
actually more interested in others benefiting from the use of these tools.
Be
careful not to bite the hand that feeds you. I wish you continued success in
your works.
Sincerely,
Ming

Hi Ming,
There seems to be a misunderstanding here. That "what's your
point" message
wasn't from Andrea. There was a typo where it said "I'm Andrea"
but I think
what the writer intended was "I'm sure Andrea appreciates the free
advertising."
Your message was inoffensive and I am sure there are some on this list who
have
never heard of Andrea's stuff so you have done no harm and probably some
good.
No need to justify yourself.

Murray

Hello Ming, Murray, Michael,
i just noticed this thread and i'm just jumping in to say that indeed
the "I'm Andrea" message was a typo from Michael Scheurer...
It's always rewarding to see enthusiasm and satisfaction in the users
and, as we are a young company, any word of mouth is very welcome. What
Michael was trying to say however, is that the list has some rules as
"no commercials, etc etc", which i agree should be followed,
especially
as people might think that Ming is someone from Redmatica, which of
course is not...
Best Regards
Andrea at Redmatica
