I don't know why you want to do this "unless your drive your too
slow", if
you are on the MAC you can create a RAM disk and use it as your logic
destination.
Take care
OPPPS, my apologies for the fast typo, I meant "unless your drive is
too
slow"
> unless your drive your too slow"
Whilst on this subject the other day I got a message that it could
not load my instrument - it had run out of memory (512 on a PC) Funny
I thought I have loaded more instruments before. So I saved the song,
exited and started over again and it loaded that instrument and even
the next one. So I was thinking, in my search for the right sound I
load an instrument then reload another one - Is that first instrument
(not being used) still in memory - I think yes but how to clear it
out? (without exiting every time??)
Secondly I understood the reply that the second occurance of an
instrument is not loaded again. I have several instrument drum sets
in which the higher samples C3 upward (Bongos, persussion etc ) are
the same. The differences are the main drum sounds snares, toms etc
are changed. If I load set 1 into one audio instrument 1 and set 2
into the next will it use the common samples from both only once?
Hi All,
Does anyone know of a freeware audio extractor for Mac. I am using the
Extractor progam that comes with toast at the moment. Since
dounloading iTunes it has slowed down to nearly a stand still and is
impossible to work with.
I bassicaly need a program that will extract stuff from the internal
CD on my B&W G3.
Any sugestions?

In Logic, import the tracks as QuickTime movie [Options/QuickTime Movie]
That should convert the track to an audiofile.

Thanks mate, but with Extractor I don't have to convert the entire track.
I sample a lot of drum sounds and other small bits of audio of CD.
Any other way?
hi,
I've given this one a good go, but
cant get my master keyboard modwheel to map to volume
and record it (exs24).
What am I missing here? Help appreciated!

With the Logic/Quicktime route, you CAN also select. Just use the
options dialog, and set the in and out points.
Someone said that Toast audio extractor was better though. Can't
imagine why it's slowed down though. I also have iTunes and TAE
worked fine for me the other day.

I have to convert some Akai MPC 3000 libraries into EXS land. I tried to use
the AKAI convert but the EXS won't look at the zip drive. The MAC OS mounts
the disks on the desktop and says they are dos formatted and I can open the
disk and see the sounds but no program I've tried will even read the
samples.
SoundApp see's them and says they are Next format but when I playback all I
get is digital grunge.
Does anyone know of a way (program) to just access the samples on these
disks. I don't care about the program information so much.
Thanks...
I had big problems with the first version of iTunes. Conflicts with
logic and other apps. Maybe Joe hasn't got the latest version.
cheers

AFAIK the only way to do it is burn them to CD in AKAI format. Unless
chickensys translator addresses this, I don't know.

you could try the latest version of the Bitheadz Osmosis demo.. I
*think* it will read AKAI formatted Zips now.. Launch the demo and
then insert the Zip to see if it works..
BTW, if it works, you would want to convert to SampleCell format (if
you want the program info) and then import to the EXS..
good luck,

hello,

You may want to check out the capabilities of CDXtract. I believe that
there is a Mac version available and I think that it can convert parameters
as well. If you own a PC, another one is Translator. They are working on a
Mac version (for a long time now but nothing's been released yet). Transfer
station is good only if you want to convert sample files. It does not
convert programming parameters. Both CDXtract and Translator support
conversions to EXS-24 format I believe while Transferstation does not (last
I checked). You would need to convert to Akai format, burn it to a CD and
then convert using the Akai converter in EXS-24.

For what it's worth, I have iTunes v1.1
Seems to run alongside Logic - I use it to audition Spectrasonics samples.

Transferstation is useful only on the lowest level of samples as
Fernando said. Until a better Mac solution arrives, it's okay for
very simple patches of samples, as you have to map everything
yourself.

I wish there was a Mac version - it's been dreamware for a long time. :-(
You could run virtualPC and use CDXtract or Translator, but is it
worth the $$ ?
Maybe all Mac users should go to the relevant websites and shout for
the Mac versions.

PS - I really wish Emagic would simply add EXS24 support for a few
more formats, especially Roland S760. There must must be 1000's of
Roland CD's out there, begging to be used.
I use it for the spectrasonics samples too!! its great, anyhow, I was
getting random crashes with it and logic at the same time, after quitting
logic.

I found logic is doing a very bad job with the loops in the
soundfonts. Now I'm using CD-extract to do the conversion,
works pretty good.

Oh, I remember now, there is a documented conflict with iTunes and Toast
if you have firewire or usb drives. It says something in the iTunes
readme
Hi everyone,
I just joined the ranks of EXS-24 owners. However, I have a small problem.
I cannot authorize it. I have installed it with the latest version of LAWP.
I then select it in the Audio Instrument strip (in the new hierarchical
menu) and it prompts me to authorize. I put the CD in and, after displaying
a title bar saying that it is checking the CD drive, it asks me again.
Thinking that I may have it in the wrong CD drive (I have a SCSI CD Burner
as well), I put it in the other drive. I then get the hourglass (no title
bar saying that it is checking the CD) and it just hangs. It will sit there
for a long time apparently doing nothing. Is this normal? Do I need to
wait for an indefinite amount of time for it to authorize? Is something
wrong?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Fernando
p.s. - I used aspichk and it indicated that I have ASPI layer 4.60. This is
the latest that I could find from Adaptec's website.
FWIW, no probs with TAE/iTunes here on my G4/533 (details below)...
perhaps you should do some extension troubleshooting?
TAE 1.1
Apple Audio Extension 1.3.3
Apple CD/DVD Driver 1.4.4
Authoring Support 1.0.2
Disc Burner Extension 1.0
iTunes Extension 1.1
QuickTime 4.1.2
OS9.1

The best app for this is SOUNDAPP
http://www-cs-students.stanford.edu/~franke/SoundApp/
Its a freeware, converts/extract files to anything you want and very
efficient, I prefer it over adaptec extractor.
I've only recently started to make my own samples instead of using
libraries, doing it the old-fashioned way with microphone(s) and
portable dat recorder and lots of gaffers tape.
I've got a question about editing one-shots, specifically drum shots,
but any one-shot sample:
Is there a standard way to edit "around" a one-shot? Do you trim
the
beginning of the sample right up to the beginning of the sound, or is
there a standard amount of "leader" that's left before the sound,
Clearly this question shows the massive holes in my understanding of
digital music, but I'd like to know how you more experienced
recordists do it. Is there a rule-of-thumb for trimming the sample,
and rule for where you place the "anchor" or whatever you call the
marker that tells the sampler where to begin relative to the actual
onset of the sound?
I'm on the road and only able to get connected to news servers
occasionaly, If you could respond directly, thank you,
Nittacci
Good questions... Anchors do not function in the sampler at this time (big
disappointing discovery, I might add). Therefore, trim your sample's start
point as close to the initial attack as possible without harming the initial
sound. Any gap will make your drum tracks sound lethargic and loose or late.
If you want tight sequencing, do a good job on trimming your samples.
Best Wishes, Jer
