My _guess_ is that the interface and Logic lose contact with each
other. But it's just a guess! ;-)

Hi all. I recently got a G5 2.0 with 5.5 GB of RAM to really put my big
libraries to use, but have so far been amazingly underwhelmed by the
performance. A single PMI 290 Bosendorfer piano patch under normal use
gives me fairly frequent data underruns (in the virtual memory windowy)
with their resultant crackle. VSL Opus 1 layered string patches choke when
using modwheel crossfading. I can't imagine what havoc trying to do any
heavy orchestration would wreak, but I won't even try until I have more
confidence in the system. Disk streaming is on, and I have the libraries
spread between a second SATA drive and a FW800 drive, so drive throughput
couldn't possibly yet be at issue. And I'm using no plugins.
So far, other than being able to load more instruments because of the
greater RAM, the system is only marginally better than the G4 it replaced.
Please tell me I didn't blow four grand here! I know others are getting
fabulous things out of their G5's. What could possibly cause this poor
performance? Did I just buy a lemon?

Not a Mac expert here, but:
Did you try to run the libraries from one external drive only (preferably
the FW one I'd say)?
Did you test some different virtual memory settings yet?
One thing seems to be for sure: LogicPro's audio performance is REALLY poor
(to even put it mildly, and it's NOT related to OSX but solely up to Emagic
to fix this as other apps don't perform even halfway as bad), so you may
better be off loading as much as possible into your RAM, rather than
streaming things (that's why I'd recommend to set the virtual memory thing
on the EXS as low as possible - try to set disk drive speed to
"slow" and
harddisk recording activity to "extensive", no matter whether
that's true or
not).
Wouldn't happen to know if EXS performance is affected by the generally
lousy audio performance of LogicPro, but it might be worth a shot.

I've got my libraries spread over two drives: a second internal SATA and an
external FW800. So far I've been using libraries mostly on the SATA drive,
but since this drive actually tests slower than the FW800 drive
(surprising) I think I'll try moving everything to that drive. There have
been claims on the VSL list that using multiple drives is ineffective with
Logic Pro.

I think you're right, Sascha. Last night I changed the setting to
"slow"
and had no glitches after that. This stinks, of course, because it places
severe limitations on how many instruments can be loaded. But if Logic
Pro's streaming is faulty, it may be the only workaround for now.
Is anybody here using large instruments from SATA or FW drives with the
"fast" settings without problems?

In addition to what Sascha suggested, are you absolutely sure you
have EXS virtual memory (disk streaming) turned on? It's easy to just
think you do - I know from previous personal embarrassments!
Also, I'd make sure you have the latest version of the Bosendorfer NI
player. Older versions of NI's sampler family had big problems on
Macs. They've since sorted them out, but it might be worth taking
that VI out of your system to see whether it's the culprit.

Thanks, Nick, but yes, VM is definitely on. And I'm using the PMI Bose as
an EXS instrument (converted from Giga originally), not the NI player. I've
had problems with other large instruments besides the piano, so I think
it's a system problem---and I'm leaning toward believing it is just poor
disk reading. Are you getting good performance with your drive settings at
something other than "slow?"

Unfortunately, Logic can access up to 2 Gigabyte of RAM under OSX.
Since Plug-ins are not regarded as seperate applications, they share
memories with Logic.
Therefore, 2G Ram is max Logic and plug-ins can utilize at the same
time.
Sean McCoy wrote:

The "streaming" feature of the EXS is brilliant in general (and I
think it's
not that bad under OSX either), it's LogicPro that will somewhat spoil disk
performance - well, of course these two things seem to go hand in hand, so
the bad audio performance of LogicPro might just affect any disk accessing
sampler's efficiency as well.
Seriously, from some tests with LogicPro and Cubase SX, it seems as if
Emagic has gotten something essentially wrong in their Logic code.
Getting even close to the maximum of 128 tracks in Logic (no matter whether
they're only mono/16bit) , using the internal disk of the G5s I have
recently been working with seems completely impossible, while it doesn't
seem to be a deal with SX at all. I could perhaps do an exact test the next
days.
Pretty much dissapointing.

Logic is a real piece of work sometimes however, I was able to use
my Bosendorfer in a program called Kompakt - it runs as a separate
program on it's own, this leaves me breathing room for the VSL Pro!

Hey guys,
Guess now's my turn to ask a stupid RTFM question. Please excuse my
ignorance (for a decade or so I've been working mostly with my hardware
boxes, and used EXS only in addition to those, but now I am in the
middle of a session at a different studio, no hardware machines here,
only EXS and Kontakt are at hand and need an answer really quickly).
Let's say I havve a drumkit and need to assign a plug to each of its
instruments separately without splitting the kit to different EXS
instances. With Akai I can assign groups to different outs and process
them separately. Can I do the same in EXS, I.E. route kick to bus 1,
snare to bus 2 and so on? Just gimme a hint where to look and I think
I'll guess the rest of the procedure. Thanks a lot for any input.
Best,
Andy

In the instrument editor, route your groups to the different outputs of
the exs (main, 3-4, 5-6, etc etc) then create aux channels in logic,
and assign the inputs of the aux channels to the various numbered
outputs of the exs ...
the instance of the exs will have to be a multi-channel one, obviously
...
this is not well documented in the manual (afaik)
hope this helps,
Jonathan

Perfect. Thanks a mil, Jonathan.

Oh, really? Now I understand why I felt a bit stupid after quickly
looking through the manual and not finding any detailed info at all, so
that's why I asked. Now I have everything working, thanks again. You
guys rock!
Best,
Andy
While trying to convert a Giga disk to EXS24 I am continually getting
the error code -insufficient access priviliges error code-5000-
This is on Quantum Leap Rare Instruments and World Winds. Other Giga
disks translate very well; Symphony of Voices- no problem.
MAC OS 10.3.5. Logic 6.42
What to do????? thanks!
EXS Experts,
While playing back an Audio Instr. track, I tweaked the settings on my
sample until I got
the setting I wanted. I saved. Played back the track & the sample
settings went frenetic.
I reset them to what I wanted at the beginning of the track (I took a
snapshot of the
settings I liked after my tweaking tests-cmd/shft/3). Played back the track
& the settings
began wandering again.
I went to EXS/Options/Rename Instrument/Save Instrument As, but no dice.
I then went into the EXS24 Instrument Editor/Edit/Undo History-I'm bad at
dice.
It's probably simple. I can't find a solution in the EXS24mkII manual.H E
L P ! ! ! ! !
If there's anyone out there who's run into this problem, I'd really
appreciate your help. I
just want the tweaked settings to stay fixed, without roving.
Thanks, Mitchell

Hi Mitchell,
i think the solution is easier then you think. Have you checked whether
you have recorded all your tweaking as automation onto your track?
If so, just view and delete the automation. Fixed.
Good luck,
Seb

Hi Seb,
thank you very much for the great tip. Best to you,

hello,
I jus upgraded my logic 5 to logic 6. Now, I am having a
problems with logic pro. On esx, evp.... all the v-synth u can think
of on my pro 6 has been acting kinda funny. Some keys have
longer sustains than others. On some sounds, it would not stop
at all. Funny thing is when i play evp, only C# and F has longer
sustain. If i picked different rodes on EVP, only F# and D has
sustain. It is similer to other synth.. as soon as i picked different
sounds, different keys has unwanted sustains. Dose anyone
exprience probs like this?
Yasu, there a couple of things you can do.
Hit the 'Panic'. This is in the far upper right
corner of your Transport window, where you will see
written "No In/No Out". When you press this it should
turn the stuck notes off. If not the first time do it
again.
You can also go into your Event window and scroll
down to the problem bars/beats. There will most
likely be a Control message 64sustain. Control 64
will have either a 0 (zero) setting at Value for
'Off', and 127 for 'On'. You can delete or insert
them where you want them.
If you use the Event Window, check each track
individually to find the culprit, unless you already
know.
Hope it helps, Mitchell

Does anyone know of EXS bagpipe samples, which won't cost me an arm and
a leg?
It's for the music for the play "On The Razzle" for my local
church's
amateur dramatics society, so zero budget.

thanx for ur tip,
Although it would solve the problems, it would not be great way to play keys
when
one of the key stcuks. Its very distructing when I or my clients play the
keys. See, if I
play C minor, E flats played longer or just stuck.... It dose not work for
me since I do
not edit much at either matrix or midi event. I'd rather play keys 'live'. I
have no idea
some of the keys stuck longer than others. It is not my midi controller.
Itcould be
OMS (yes i am using OS9) since my sound cards only supports OS9 still. I
have no
idea. If anyone who have experienced same kind of problems, please post
here.
thanks

I'm not sure how good they are, the size is rather small.

Sure, I experience this problem often when punching
in. It's not a Logic issue, it will happen with any
sequencer if you use the sustain pedal. The problem is
that you send a sustain" on" message and then punch
and erase the sustain "off" message.
The only remedy I know is the one posted above
regarding editing out the controller messages. But it
can be a real pain. JP
