Thanks for the information, Gareth. Will definately keep Opus 1 in mind. Is it so that it lacks some brass-instruments? Does it lack anything else crucial? If so, do you know if it is possible to build up the VLS-library little by little, to buy the CDs one by one. A 5000 $ investment just like that is simply too much for me right now. Thanks again. Subject: Akai Convert Error
Message #12630
Please Help!!!! I have recently installed a new hard drive after my old one failed and loaded back on Logic 5.2 with the EXS24 sampler. However now whenever I try to convert Akai Samples I get the following message: "Akai Convert Error, please run the EXS24 installer again". I haven't changed anything about the system other than the hard drive (and I did load on the new direct x 9.0c). I am running Windows 98 SE and have a Athlon 1200 with 512Mb RAM and Terratec EWS88D soundcard. Can anyone please help with this problem?

Message #12631
Hi we are about to receive our brand new G5 dual 2.5 (yes !) and we have to make some decision about RAM and hard drive. RAM: We can choose between Kingston value (KVR) and Kingston branded (KTA). Branded is pricier. Is it worth the money ? Btw, the mac comes with 512Mb, we are puting 2 extra gig (4 x 512 Mb) . Is that enough for Logic and exs running vienna library ? DRIVE: We are looking for an internal SATA very fast drive of at least 200 gig for EXS playback only; what is our best bet if we need a LOT of voices for streaming? 10k rpm drive worth considering ? What about internal RAID ? Thanks in advance Louis

Subject: How many EXS instruments do you have?
Message #12633
I use EXSManager Pro by Redmatica. I've run into a problem if I try to keep more than (approximately) 30,000 to 32,000 instruments in my EXS instruments folder. I realize that is an insane number but when I try this, nothing will load in the EXS. I cut it back to about 27,000+ and things load and work fine now. Is anyone aware of a maximum number of instruments for EXS? And out of curiosity, how many instruments do you keep in your instrument folder?

Subject: EXS authorization
Message #12634
I bought version 4.8 platinum off of a guy on ebay. At first everything seemed perfect. The program installed without a hitch and it recognized the dongle, etc. After a couple of months I have encountered a couple of issues. First, there have been a few times where when I start logic it will not recognize the dongle. When I go to the "find key" program it does not see it either. If I physically take the dongle off and turn the pc off for a minute and the reboot all if well. Wierd. More importantly, I am now unable to use exs. It tells me to insert the cd at which time it attempts to reinstall the entire program (which I did before I realized what it was trying to do). Is this only a trial or is this all a glitch of the copy protection? What do I have to do to make exs functional? Thanks in advance. -sean maru

Yes there is a Hollow Sun Reason ReFill under development.I am working on it now for my new soundware company Dangerous Bear Underground, with the full permission and cooperation of Hollow Sun.It is very nearly ready and it will be comprehensive. There are already two free previews available at www.computermusiconline.com ,and the commercial cd of the whole library should be out in a couple of weeks. The biggest hurdle remaining to clear is building my website,dangerousbear.com,which is proving to be a little harder than I thought it would be.In any case, the product will be made available as soon as it is ready for release.Price $30 US. The ReFill Hollow Sun Classic Instruments will include all the Hollow Sun akp presets translated into NNXT,plus ReDrum kits, rex files, rns files for effects and modulation routings and original dBu NNXT instruments based on the samples.A second Hollow Sun ReFill is planned which will focus on the drum machine samples and will contain many more ReDrum kits and rex loops of beats made with Hollow Sun drum sounds. I hope that you've enjoyed using the freebie, and I hope you'll be getting the full library. Opus 1 has good basic brass; trumpet, horn and trombone all in solo and ensemble in a wide variety of articulations and a solo tuba sample. Also has horn and trombone glissandi as well as stacc repetitiions for trumpets, horn and trombone but only at set speeds. No muted brass instruments. As far as I know its not poss to build the library up separately. They certainly sell solo and chamber strings separately as well as a separate perc module and sax module as well as various others, but you can¹t seem to build it up separately. A friend of mine bought the full VSL pro edition which is completely out of this world but so is the price!! Opus 1 seems like a good compromise, but still needs a little extra added at later stages. John, Thanks for the reply! I've been enjoying the Hollow Sun samples with the EXS, and it it's nice to have them available for Reason, as well. I find that Reason is nice for getting some inspiration once in a while, but the factory sounds are a bit dull. One problem, though. I'm having problems downloading the 2nd preview from the computer music site. Do you have an alternate URL where I could get it from? Hey there, I'm wondering if there is an easy way to install the Hollow Sun samples in the EXS24. Last time I was at the website it was really labor/time intensive to make a library of just one song. Are there any shortcuts? Many thanks, Pete

Subject: Syncing Samples in a Song
Message #12643
I was wondering if anyone has an tricks of the trade w/regard to timing of samples within a tune. I'm having difficulty synchronizing everything. The best thing I can think of is to set a guide track in an audio track of one sample, determine the exact tempo by pressing the "T" key and then looping it. This would be the "master" loop for a particular section of a song from which other samples from the same source (sampled tune/groove), even if a little off tempo wise, can be played over (just so long as they aren't played for very much time - at which they would fall out of sync w/the master sample). If you move on to another "master" sample within the same song, you determine that sample's tempo and change the tempo in the tune to that new tempo. Does this sound right? Does anyone have any knowledge/experience to share with regard to this? Are there any good sources online to read about such things? Many thanks, Pete

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you mean by "library of one song". Apart from that, all you need to do to play with the Hollowun patches is to load the samples from Hollowsun, unpack them into a directory of your choice (perhaps some sub-directory of your "EXS Samples" folder), then grab the EXS files from the file area of this group and unpack them into your "sampler instruments" directory. - Sascha

Message #12650
Hi Louis and congrats on your new Beast I quote: RAM: We can choose between Kingston value (KVR) and Kingston branded (KTA). Branded is pricier. Is it worth the money ? I will be testing the KVR today on my 2.5G G5, so I can keep you posted. Apparently, it is simply a question of the degree of testing...my RAM guru says it should be up-to-spec. There are incidents of it not being good enough, however. Btw, the mac comes with 512Mb, we are puting 2 extra gig (4 x 512 Mb) . Is that enough for Logic and exs running vienna library ? If you need to work off a template containing all articulations of all instruments, then no. You need to wait for Logic 7 which will allow the program to see more than X megs (to get that exact number, check out the forums at vsl.co.at...long-running discussion). I am planning to spend yet more to get at least 2pairs of 1G sticks, they are way expensive, but I want those extra slots ready to bring me to 6 or 8 Gigs for VSL. If you are OK with loading sounds as needed while you work, then 2-4 should be fine. The paging is actuallly fast enough on these systems to be usable, unlike the G4s. Louis
