Subject: Opus1 VSL
Message #12501
Dear all Am still in a dilemma about orchestral samples. Does anyone have experience of the Opus 1 VSL set its demos and reviews sound promising and the advantage seems to be that it gives the complete orchestra. Not very cheap at £660 but is it value for money? Would £660 be better spent on making an orchestra out of the SAM bundles, Garritan strings etc IAO? Thanks for any advice / comments that may come this way!! Best wishes Gareth Hemmings

Gareth, I think that with either Opus 1 or Quantum Leap LOrchestra Gold, you can't lose. With one, Opus, you get the fantastic legato tool/samples, and with QLSO you get samples with ambience. I have and love Garritan, SAM's collection, Dan Dean stuff, etc., but if I was starting from scratch, I would get an all-in-one orchestral collection, and would add some instruments to complement the collection after some time. Hi Gareth, I can only tell you that I use the VSL Complete Library, and it is without a doubt the absolute best orchestra samples I have ever used. Yes, it is extremely expensive, mine eats up an entire 250 gigabyte drive, but it is unsurpassed in quality! When carefully mixed and layered it is at times, totally undetectable to the average ear. It's all in the mix and presentation. You really need to have a good understanding of a real orchestra to pull the reality out of the samples. I would not trade it for anything. Maxx

So, I don't know what's happening there... Unless >maybe the stereo sample is actually two mono samples panned and therefore >two voices??! The answer to Julie's question is: it depends. If you have multiple layers and switch between them using velocity (the usual way of layer-switching), only the currently triggered layer is played (or more if you've applied x-fading). This is all common sense of course. However, if you've set e.g. Controller 1 to determine "Sample Select" instead of velocity, so that the mod-wheel cycles through the layers, _then_ all layers are played at all times, no matter how many actually sound. If you think about it a bit, this makes sense as well: when using the mod-wheel, you can access a layer at all times and there's no way for the EXS to know when that will happen, so the best it can do is trigger all layers at note-on. Besides, if the EXS only triggered a layer when it's really needed, you would always hear the attack-phase of all layers as soon as they're accessed. In the mod-wheel-triggering situation this generally is not what you want -- you want to move smoothly between layers, and for that it's (again) necessary for all layers to be triggered at note-on time. I'm not 100% sure about key-switched layers but it's easy enough to try out for yourself: make a 4-layer instrument and set up key-switching for all layers. Play one note and watch the polyphony indicator on the EXS: does it say 1 or 4 (probably the latter)? I think I remember that using _anything but velocity_ for Sample Select causes the EXS to trigger all layers at all times, so there you go... -- Hendrik Jan Veenstra h @ k n o w a r e . n l Omega Art: http://www.omega-art.com/

I'd appreciate opinions from any 1 out there who can tell me there opinion as to what virtual sampler works best with Logic 6.3.3, MacG5, OS 10.3.4, 1GB Ram. Is it GigiStudio? Mach 5? Reasons? EXS? I'm about to purchase the Vienna Symphonic Library (the Full top of the line pacakge) and I'd like to know which of the above virtual samples will let me record & playback a full symphony orchestra. I'm sure I'm gonna need to buy like a ton of more ram for starters but other than that which is the best virtual sampler that is reliable, will allow me to play back a full symphony score, rarely crashes and intergrates best with my setup. Thanks for every1 advise in advance!!! Maestro Composer-Songwriter-Producer ASCAP

Hello phillymaestro, If your name represents Philadelphia I am from this area too! OK your question? I use the VSL PRO and I absolutely love it. I currently have it in EXS24 MKII in a G5 with 4 gigabytes up front, and it works fine however, let me explain. I had an issue with Kips Bosendorfer Imperial Grand 290 in the EXS where I ran out of voices pretty quick, with classical piano crisscrossing the the 88 key deck this was almost expected. There was no multiple triggering that was apparent, just the legitimate use of all of the voices. Kip recommended the use of Native Instruments Kompakt to use with the piano. This now allows me 256 voices available for the piano. This may be your answer depending how you record your orchestra parts. I try to layer as many single samples together as I can to keep the realism of the orchestra, but have found this does not always accomplish the task. With over 240 gigs of samples, I have found that multiple instrument tricks can be employed to achieve the same result, and actually work better. I have heard a rumor that the voice number may increase from 64 to 128 in the EXS with the release of 7, but it is a Rumor. If your intent is to fully recreate the orchestra one instrument at a time a sampler with more voices will need to be implemented. After you play with the VSL for a while you may find, as I have, that the EXS is more than functional. The real secret to the sounds are in the mix and processing! Good Luck with your project. Maxx

New free piano for EXS, Giga, Halion, Kontakt at http://www.gigfiles.com It is an Hybrid piano made with the Attack of the Pleyel P190 and the release of Steinway C. Interesting. 4 layers of velocity, sampled almost each note. I've tested with Giga, it sounds great, does it works with EXS? I don't know. The soundbank is +300mb but compressed only 100mb, I've downloaded it in 1hour on my poor DSL line :)

Hi Philly, As a potential buyer of the vsl too, I spent some time to understand this library, and wich configuration was needed for a symphonic "real-time" use : sorry, it's loud ! First, note that Gigastudio runs only under PC. And to achieve with "midi real time" the realism that you can hear in some demos, the only way seems to have a few Gigastudios on 2 or 3 PCs. Have a look on the vienna forums, some topics are about the "dreaming configuration" for vsl. Second, you must understand the vsl "philosophy" : it's arround "articulations", which are the different kind of play for each section. For an instance, for the complete violin section of the Pro Edition, you 'll have to load about 15 instruments. Even with streaming technology, as you said you'll need a lot of ram, and a lot of midi channels or virtual sampler instances. Anyway if you want to work with your G5 only, the "only" choice at this time is exs24, if you want to use the performance tools provided with vsl. As I know Mach5 is not reliable at this time. Considering you can load and play with good latency on your G5 about 50 instances of the esx24, you won't have the complete vsl loaded. Anyway it should rocks (!), and the logic issue is to freeze the achieved parts, then import then as audio files, then load new instruments. It should be difficult if you're working for movies, when you have to make several changes untill the final editing. My conclusion was given by the new vsl release of "Horizon Opus1", which is a simplified Pro Edition, wich seems to actually fit needs of single computer users. You'll save a large account of money, enough to buy a lot of ram, and it's still sound terrific... Regards, and sorry for my approximative english ;-) Yan

Mach 5? Reasons? EXS? You already have EXS, and VSL comes in either Giga or EXS format. EXS and Giga both work really well, but you already have a G5 and EXS, and they'll go to waste if you don't use all the power. >I'm about to purchase the Vienna Symphonic Library (the Full top of >the line pacakge) and >I'd like to know which of the above virtual samples will let me >record & playback a full >symphony orchestra. Yes, but the question is how many articulations you can have loaded up and ready to play. It's not that you use every articulation in your template in every piece, it's that you want lots of them ready so you can find the right one for the phrase/notes you're going to play. There's nothing more annoying than having to stop all the time to load samples. One G5 still isn't enough, but it's workable. Unfortunately, it's expensive to buy VSL for the second platform (Mac or PC), but ideally that's what you'd do: run it on EXS and then add cheap Giga PCs for expansion. > I'm sure I'm gonna need to buy like a ton of more ram for starters 4GB seems to be what most people are using with EXS/VSL. >but other than that which is the best virtual sampler that is >reliable, will allow me to play >back a full symphony score, rarely crashes and intergrates best with my setup. Dear musicians After the release of the FREE Hybrid Flanged piano (a 400 mb soundbank -110 mb compressed) we have faced a huge number of downloads. Just for yesterday we have used more than 700gigabytes of bandwidth! Sometime more than 100 users were downloading simultaneously. The server did shut down some downloads, and was sometime very slow. As a consequence we have moved our server to a 100mb dedicated full duplex line. We are also setting up a backup server that will be used in case of hi-download issues. I know that FREE stuff are always very popular, but in the case the server is slow, just come back later! The soundbanks will stay on the server and we will not remove it :) Happy download Nikko
