Just wanted to tell you that the bug in the 24 bit version of the White
Grand is now fixed, with the great help from Garth Hjelte at Rubber
Chicken and Andrea Gozzi from Redmatica.

Ernst,
Just wanted to thank you for the recent advice. The ground loop
isolator completely solved the problem. I will definitely invest in an
audio interface soon, but (for now) your suggestion fixed my setup. Thanks
again!

That was it. It now works great. What a sweet sound! I've been using an
old Kurzweil 2500 for sampled piano, and while it was good in it's day, no
comparison here!
I do share your frustration with EXS's inability to intelligently handle
note off samples. I really couldn't use the White Grand with release
samples because 1) I'm using a Korg Trinity as keyboard controller that
seems to send a uniform note-off midi velocity of 64 as opposed to the
actual velocity generated by my hands on the keys and 2) the EXS triggers
the note offs when I let go of the keys even though I'm holding down the
sustain pedal. If it's a quiet chord and I lift my hands you hear a big
damper noise as the chord continues to ring out. We have been asking Emagic
to fix this for some time. I wonder what's going on over there. If you
read the Logic forum, you'll find that an overwhelming majority of us favor
fixing all the bugs in Logic as opposed to continually cranking out new
features. To date, the requests seem to be falling on deaf ears. Instead
we get Logic Pro (6.4) which is identical to Logic 6.3.3 only you get all
the virtual instruments which I already paid excessively for, and a new
startup splash screen.
If you feel ambitious, you might try writing to them and explaining how the
EXS really needs this note off update if it's going to compete with the Giga
Studio. I have many libraries now that use this feature, but can't be
implemented correctly in the EXS.
Anyway, many thanks for your efforts, I'm a very happy customer, and I plan
to post (if you don't mind) a quick synopsis of the last 24 hours to the
Logic and EXS forums so everybody can read a testimonial of what incredible
product support looks like.
Best regards,
James Ryan

Hi James.
Glad that it works!
Btw, the releasesamples shouldn’t sound when you have sustainpedal down!
It was another small bug, and it has now been taken care of!
Just visit the White Grand resource page at www.sampletekk.com
<http://www.sampletekk.com/> and download the updated White Grand.exs
file.
If you would like to post your opinions in the forums, I wouldn’t mind
at all! Specially since they are positive!!!!

An .exs file holds some information about the sample, more than just the
file name, and the engine pays attention to that rather than what is in the
sample.
You can try this yourself - create a new .exs instrument, add a zone, and
assign a 16-bit sample to that zone. Shut down EXS (and Logic or whatever)
and change that sample in an sample editor to a 24-bit sample. Reopen EXS
and play that original Instrument. Noise...
It's because the .exs file holds bit information, and that's what the
engine is instructed to recognize the sample as, regardless of the
information that is in the sample.
So swapping samples is not a fool-proof operation when it comes to EXS. It
is with most other software samplers, but not EXS.

For those who were following the string "White Grand = White
Noise" over the
weekend, I just wanted to post a quick synopsis of what happened because I
think it deserves mention.
I bought the White Grand, a very impressive virtual piano from Sampletekk,
newly ported to EXS. It didn't work. It just produced white noise. I
emailed Per Larsson at Sampletekk to see what could be done. I had done
the sample re-link after the installation using Redmatica's ExsManager.
I emailed Per personally, but my email accidentally got forwarded to the EXS
forum. It was Saturday at around 5PM EST. Less than an hour later, I had
received emails from Per, Andrea at Redmatica, and Garth from Rubber Chicken
Software (Translator - the program I believe did the original conversion
from White Grand Gigga to EXS).
Not only were they in contact with me, they were in contact with each other,
back and forth for hours, painstakingly trouble shooting the problem. The
Europeans, Per & Andrea, from Sweden & Italy respectively were up
until 2AM
their time on a Saturday night working on this, (Garth is in MN so he's
actually an hour earlier than me) and together they found the cause of the
problem and the solution. With the jointly achieved solution, Per fixed the
White Grand and posted it to my site, Andrea added a feature in EXSManager
to insure the problem wouldn't happen with any future re-links and emailed
me the new program. All the while, Garth communicated with them and added
his digital expertise to ultimately trouble shoot and clear up the problem.
I have never in my life seen this kind of product support. It was
completely above and beyond the call of duty and immeasurably appreciated.
We're talking bug fixing when they should have been kicking back with their
friends and families and relaxing. Can you imagine this kind of attention
to customer relations from Emagic? Motu? Apple? I hope they're reading
this.
I just want to give these guys a very well deserved plug here. Their
programs are state of the art, their support is beyond anything I've seen in
this business, and IMHO they deserve our support. If you own and use the
EXS, these programs are a must and now you know you're in good hands if you
buy them:

Hey I just started messing arround with the Wizoo Latin Percussion 24 EXS
version. But on
a lot of the EXS instruments, when I load them, EXS says that it cant find
some of the AIF
files in the instrument. At first I thought that I forgot to copy some of
the samples over
but then when I searched my HD for the files it said were missing, they were
already there.
So then I checked the EXS instrument files to see if the Wizoo people
programmed them
wrong but the file names are all correct. So in the instrument editor I
tried manually going
through all the zones and reloading the files (even though all of them
already had the
correct file names) and it worked. However a lot of the instruments have
tons of velocity
layers (e.g. congas) and that would mean I would have to do that for like 40
or more
zones per instrument.
So basically my question is this: is there any way to have Logic re-search
all the targeted
files in an instrument?
I thought it searched for the files everytime an instrument is loaded. I
guess I was wrong
or otherwise this shouldnt be happening.
Thanks in advanced.

Get Redmatica's ExsManager. http://www.redmatica.com I believe (as of
yesterday) the new version has a function that corrects exactly the problem
you're talking about. This program is essential for any library as it
drastically reduces the EXS load time, especially with big libraries. It
re-links files so fast if you blink, it's done. I just bought the White
Grand with over 3000 samples and who knows how many keygroups with 32
velocity layers. It relinked all files in 13 seconds. Project Manager
would have taken many hours and probably not fixed the problem you're
talking about here.

Short of you buying that EXS Manager software which reassociates samples to
zones apparently fairly quickly, or using the dead-slow project manager (I
still haven't figured that thing out -- I'm new to logic 6), here is a
sloppy but effective solution. It's a pain in the arse, but it works:
Find just THE FIRST sample, save the EXS instrument and then, QUIT AND
REBOOT LOGIC. When the EXS instrument that you just did this trick to loads
in, it'll now know where all the samples are. The smart thing to do is to
load in ALL the instrument you think you'll need, do the first (or any one)
sample "reunion", then save ALL those instruments. Upon rebooting,
they ALL
should load in fine.
Emagic, you REALLY need to solve this long-standing problem :-(
Thanks for both of the suggestions. I haven't tried the one where you load
just the first
sample. But I did download the demo of EXS Manager. It worked great. It was
a little
annoying that it could only do 40 instruments at a time... but hey it was
free. Great
software though. And the AutoSampler looks pretty interesting.
Im gonna go back to re patching everything... 40 or less instruments at a
time... Its a good
thing I already had all my inst files meticulously (read anally) organized.
It makes it way
easier.
Thanks again.

Hello,
I'm Michele Hobbs...long-time lurker, first-time poster.
I am interested in an EXS24 string library that would be good for pop and
R&B music.
Many of the string libraries available are nice, but seem to have too much
ambience
because of the way they are sampled. Can someone recommend a string library
that
includes samples that aren't so ambient? I've read that R&B producer
Rodney Jerkins is
using VSL, but I can't afford that at this point. I don't want to spend 1000
USD, but if the
recommended libraries are that much, then so be it.
Thank you,

Well, IMHO, it is not worth it to buy an older library today (older as
in stuff like Advanced Orchestra) unless you like the sound and can get
it cheap enough. My advice to you is to get VSL's Opus 1. It is a
lower-cost version of VSL that sells for around $1000. I don't own it
but the demos that I've heard sound great. It not only includes
strings but the entire orchestra. Unfortunately, if you wanted to cut
down the cost, you can't get the Opus 1 strings separately. It comes
in a native exs-24 format so you wouldn't have any conversions to do
and, since there is no natural reverb on the samples, you can get a dry
sound or a very wet sound if you like.

I second that. While I think Redmatica is a wonderful piece of software I
think its unfair for those that maybe CANT afford it to basically HAVE to
buy
it to get Logic to do what Logic should ALREADY be able to do and that is
simply this: Load samples in a quick and efficient manner. I have some
libraries that have had to be reinstalled so many times its rediculous...

1. I'm routing the Pitch of an instrument to LFO1, NOT using the
default Ctl#1 - it's on all the time. But I want to use the delay
function so it fades in after a second or so. However, the starting
pitch of the note - before the delay kicks in - is out of tune by the
inverse amount of the "cents" parameter. For example, if I set the
amount of LFO1 to +25 cents, the notes starts off playing 25 cents
flat, then as the LFO fades in it comes right. Is this normal? If it
is, why?
2. Between the two envelope generators are 2 sliders - one for time and
one for curve (or something - not in front of the computer right now.)
What do these affect?

I am receiving individual mails, if you want I could send them to you if you
tell me the exact date.
But obviously a digest would be better... plus, I'm on Windows (which
