I am running into some funny problems. I copy and pasted some zones and
groups
from other instruments and corrected their keyswitching SELECT BY parameters
so
that I have control over their selection.
However it turned out that all of the samples assigned to the groups beyond
the 64th
one on the list were not sounding. I had a total of 66 groups so 2 groups in
total were
not sounding nor would they show up on the editing keyboard in the EXS
editor as
being played when I was playing them. maybe this is a 64 Group limitation?
Well I got around that with some nifty regrouping and got the same thing
happening
on 54 total groups. Only that same darn two groups still would not sound. It
was like
they had a memory that they were from the "over 64 group limit" or
something. This
was true after relaunch, reboot, and changing of all EXS settings. Weird.
Still as yet
unsolved.
I did however notice that a few, maybe one or two samples/zones, in each of
the non
sounding groups were sounding, and furthermore, just a few (actually 3)
zones/
samples were not sounding on one of the groups that was in the
"fully" sounding
category here.
I noticed I have a total of 2,211 total zones at this point. I wondered if
maybe the
reason I am not hearing some notes is because there are too many zones?
I tried to test this theory by deleting some of the sounding groups and the
zones they
pointed to, to bring things down to like 1500 zones. I saved and loaded the
instrument across a relaunch, but there was no change to the non-sounding
groups
even though now there was significantly fewer zones, AND groups.
it seems there is some kind of zone/group memory that is saved in-state no
matter if
they qualify for different status, for instance from when you delete some
zones/
groups to make room for them to sound.
CAN ANYONE JUST TELL ME AY EXPERIENCES THEY'VE HAD WITH ANYTHING RELATED
TO THIS? Whether positive or not? (and I wasn't yelling, just speaking a
little louder.)
:)
Thanks,
Evan Evans
I made a startling discovery moments ago. Depending on how you SORT your
ZONES,
will result in which zones play and which zones do not play. There seems to
be a
range where zones do not play from. I am working on pinning it down. If this
is true
than it seems to be a bug. It could be kind of Aliasing in the scientific
sense of the
word. In other words if you have 2200 zones, and there can only be 2048,
then
152(2200-2048) from the max of 2048, or 1896 either sounds instead or
doesn't
sound.
Whatever it is it's darned hard to figure out. i am trying to figure out the
rhyme or
reason to it now.
Evan Evans
I think I've traced it down to you cannot have more than 32 Zones in the
same
physical location (same note). It may be that you can have an unlimited
number of
groups, but it seems you cannot have more than 32 zones per note setup, even
if the
zones are never all sounding at once, or are conditioned by groups.
I thought a recent release did away with the 32 Zone/Group limit? I guess it
was just
the 32 Group limit.
Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks,
Evan Evans
P.S. Sorry that my messages are not wrapping properly. i am not sure why. I

Hi,
Is it possible to controll any EXS paramtere shortcut-like?
E.g. setting the Transpose exactly with +/- 12 semitone with its dial
using mouse on the EXS interface is a bit awkward and slow. Thus I
would like to use a button on the computer keyboard to transpose up
and down the instrument with 12 semitones.
Is it possible somehow? If not.. are there any other solution for
easy remote controll of the Transpose paramter? Like with pitchbend?
Thanks,
B.
And again Hendrik Jan, thanks for your time.

Do you have a suggestion for any program in particular?

No. you can't use the computer keyboard to control faders, buttons
and the like (one of my big wishes for when (if?) the environment
finally gets its much needed overhaul).
>If not.. are there any other solution for easy remote controll of

You can use any MIDI message to control almost anything in Logic. If
you use LA6, you can use the new Quick Automation Access (or whatever
it's called) to assign some controller (like modulation wheel) to
some button or fader. Unfortunately you can only use /one/
controller for /one/ parameter this way.
If you want more flexibility and want to use several controllers to
control several parameters at once, you could download my
autodemo.zip (from the Logic section of my website) which
demonstrates in 4 tutorial songs how to do track-based automation
with external controllers.
If you don't need m,uch sophistication, you could also create a new
fader in the environment (audio mixer, in the window's New menu) and
cable it into the mixer strip containing the EXS. Set its Out
parameter to the proper Fader event (see my autodemo on tips how to
determine which settings you need for which parameter). Then just
drag the fader up and down. Even though this might seem to do
nothing more than duplicate the functionality of the 'built-in' EXS
fader, this is not quite true. Using an environment fader allows you
to set e.g. a limited range, or to use a button instead of a fader to
quickly switch between 2 preset values.
Enough choices, me thinks...

I suggest we take this to private mail. We both being Dutch, it's
easier to deal with this in out native tongue, I guess :-).

I appreciate that what for me is ethnic is to someone else their own -
but I'm sure you'll know what I mean! I am looking for some EXS
compatible samples of Indian / African / Arabian type sounds,
particularly string and blown instruments. I have found a few but
they appear to be mostly loops and phrases, so not that useful for
putting together one's own melodies - what I really want is single
note samples. Any recommendations folks? (UK availability a plus!)

Hi guys,
I'm a complete newbie to the EXS24 (got it around a month ago), my
free factory disk has just arrived and I've tried installing in order
to load all the relevant samples and I keep getting an error message
that it cannot detect a copy of Logic on the machine. I have Logic
5.5.0 on a G4 (dual proc) mac which works without any issues. Has
anyone had this before or can anyone assist?

Do you mean put the sampler instruments and the samples in
"/Library/Application Support/Emagic/Sampler Instruments'
I've always had them in applications/Logic 6 series/Sampler Instruments
Which is where they are when installed. Didn't find anything in
what passes for a manual that they need to be moved to the library.
I'm sure this is something elementary I'm missing here. I'm pulling my
hair out trying to get logic relinked to the sampler instruments.
Someone
mentioned the Redmatica EXS manager - does that actually find problems
like
this and move or instruct you to move instruments/samples to the correct
folder? When I use project manager, it sees the instruments and samples,
no red cursor to suggest the link is broken. The instruments are located
in: applications/Logic 6 Series/Sampler Instruments/EXS
instruments/#Factory Instruments/
I did Refresh in the EXS window, still no instruments - is there
another step I don't know about to have the EXS see the
instruments?

Take a look at:
Heart of Asia
Heart of Africa
I have Roland S760 editions which can be easily converted for EXS24 use.
Both by Spectrasonics (USA) - probably available in the UK too.

That's a known problem with the factory installer. It's looking for
an application called "Logic Audio Platinum" (old name) instead of
Logic Platinum (new name). So if you temporarily rename the Logic
application by adding 'Audio' to it, the installer should find it.
If that doesn't work: you can "install" the samples by simply
copying
them off the CD to your hard disk. Then all you miss are the
instrument files (.exs) which I could send to you if you want.

You would think they were the same, wouldn't you? However, I have also
noticed this odd behaviour sometimes in other applications - .aiff
extender = noise, .aif plays back fine. If I remember correctly, simply
removing that extra 'f' was sufficient to cure the problem.

What??? If this is true (which I suppose it is -- otherwise I would
accuse you of lying, which I wouldn't want to be caught doing :-),
this is completely ridiculous... The filename shouldn't matter at all
(of course). Oh well, I guess this fits in nicely with stuff like
the EXS factory disk installer not finding Logic if it doesn't have
'audio' in its name... Sigh...

Hi everyone,
Is anyone using Panther with Logic 6? Any issues? I'm about to
upgrade and had a vague recollection that someone was having some
problems...has Emagic worked it out? Thanks in advance.

I work in Logic 6.3.2 on a dual 1.25GHz G4, most of the time I am under
30% CPU with fairly complex arrangments, but I have maxed it out with
one song (12 audio tracks, hundreds of audio files, 5+ virtual
instruments, maxing out the CPU on my UAD-1 card, LOTS of insert
effects, auxes sending to auxes, extremely dense MIDI data). It's
powerful, but probably about the same as your P4/2.4, not worth the
switch unless you want to use OSX (which I highly recommend, I love it).
By the way, if you want to get rid of those two tiny, useless 20" LCDs,
I'll take them off your hands... :)

Hi Julie,
No problems here, although 6.3.2 might not be as CPU efficient as 6.3.1.
Of course, I was running flawlessly under 6.2.6 also.

It's working fine on my Mac. Seems to have no trouble with pretty much any
plug in that I have installed (I just got every Waves plug in there is...)
I'm also having no trouble with ReWire applications.
Panther seems to be actually much better than Jaguar.
What computer do you want to run this on?

Thanks Eddie,
I'm on a tiBook with a 1ghz processor and a gig of ram. I haven't had
many CPU issues with this setup...at least nothing that freezing tracks
here and there wouldn't cure. I don't use that many audio tracks...but
I use a ton of EXS instances...often as many as are possible...for
orchestral arrangements and the like. Smeet thought it was a little
more CPU hungry...anything like that for you?
thanks so much...

Hi Julie and Eddie,
Just to be clear, I meant that 6.3.2 is more CPU hungry than 6.3.1 or
6.3, but overall, panther is actually less CPU hungry than jaguar was.
Have a happy new year...
