In case any of you missed this from one of the recent LUG Digests, here is a
post that details how to use a second mac as a "slave" EXS 24

You can do this and it works very well.
In the Environment:
From Physical Input – draw a single connection from output #1 to Channel
Splitter
input #1.
Draw 16 sequential connections from Channel Splitter #1 to 16 sequential
Audio
Instrument Tracks.
Insert an EXS24mkII into each Audio Instrument Track.
To each Audio Instrument track insert an I/O plug-in.
(Stereo>Logic>Helper>I/O).
When the I/O Plug-in pops up on the screen, assign any bus to its output (1
-2, for
instance) and assign another bus to its input (1-2, for instance). Then put
the plug-in
into BYPASS mode. This forces Logic to treat this channel as a live input,
thereby
eliminating any latency that would otherwise occur. Make sure each channel
in Logic
is set to receive on sequential individual MIDI channels, not set to ALL.
Record enable
all channels. It seems to work with the channels not record enabled too,
just not for
the MachFive channel (if you want to setup that sampler as well).
Repeat this entire setup adding more Channel Splitters each with 16 Audio
Instrument
tracks. (Draw a single cable from the Physical Input output #2 to Channel
Splitter #2,
then another cable from the Physical Input output #3 to Channel Splitter #3,
etc.)
Put Logic into PLAY mode (create a 2 bar loop).
In my setup, I have G5 #1 running Digital Performer under DAE (in AudioMIDI
setup, I
created different MIDI Devices that represent G5 #2 running Logic – one
device for
each group of 16 MIDI channels).
That's it!
On a Macintosh G5 Dual 2 Ghz I've so far setup 48 EXS24mkIIs, plus an
instance of
MachFive (playing 16 channel

Hi Ned,
I'm working in OS9 right now so I can't check this, but....
Try doing a multiple selection by using <select all> or
shift-clicking, then <Option>-click to do the change.
I remember this worked to some degree in the EXS24 editor, but may
not be successful for all functions.

Colin! You rock, my friend, big time!
Absolutely right on: select all zones + shift-click.
Sorry for wasting bandwidth, friends...

I am apparently SOL, as there is no option like that in my OPTIONS menu on
the EXSP24. Thanks for the info.

I'm not sure about the EXSP. In the EXS 24, it's at the bottom of the
options menu on the front interface. If it's not there, I think you are S!@t
out of luck :-(
If I convert a cd with AKAI files in the EXS24 mk2 there is a EXS-instrument
automaticaly createn. With folders and sub-folders.
How can this be done with AIFF files? It is not happening automaticaly.

... becasue the akai cd contains instrument-definitions as well,
which get translated by the EXS.
>How can this be done with AIFF files? It is not happening automaticaly.
... because if you just have a bunch of aiff waves, there's no way
the EXS can know which should go where. Your best bet is to use the
"multiple file import" (somewhere in one of the menus of the EXS's
Instrument Editor). I usually pick the chromatic option when the EXS
asks me how I want to import them, and then 1) adjust zone lengths
manually one by one, and 2) use the Key Commands "move zone up/down
inc. rootnote" to shift the zones into their proper position (these 2
KCs are real life-savers when creating your own instruments!).
Oh, I only now realise it's you Rob... haha... biertje? LOL!

Has anybody tried these out yet? The recorded demos sound nice, but they
don't have a program demo so it's impossible to tell how flexible the
samples are. It's hard to imagine a really useable classical solo vocal
library, but here's hoping....

I own these. How flexible would you like them to be? IMHO, I believe
that they will become more flexible when the Extended set will become
available. The DIVA Classical Soloists is vibrato heavy (and that's
the way that they are intended). They are beautifully recorded and
certainly usable. If you plan on making them sing actual words, it is
possible (although still limited) but it will be more difficult. The
standard vowels are there as are some consonants. Soloist 2 of the set
pretty much only covers 1 octave which makes it less flexible and
soloist only covers 1 and a half octaves. I would have preferred a
full two octaves for both so that you're not constrained to certain
keys for a melody. The attacks on the original samples have been
trimmed as the developer indicated to me that the attacks were simply
too slow to get very consistent playing out of them. The editing is
pretty good and is playable out of the box. It translates pretty well
to exs-24 from Gigasampler (I used CDXtract for this). They really
work well for haunting moods as well as some of the pretty and
beautiful stuff you hear from the demos. They are not intended to be
screaming fff vocals so keep that in mind.
Simply looking at the name may mislead you a little (Classical
Soloists) as you won't be sequencing an opera with them. As you can
tell from the demos, they do sound wonderful. I am quite happy with
them and looking forward to the Extended addition to this library.
With straight tones as well as delayed vibrato and 2 octaves to work
with, I believe that the set will be more useful together than by
itself. The nice thing is that owners of the 1st set can upgrade to
Extended for only $49.95.
There is no utility like there is for Voices of the Apocalypse and,
given the samples that are there, it would probably be difficult to
form words in the same way (not that it is completely impossible).
There are short syllables that have been sampled but, IMHO, they lose
some of their usefulness because they are pitched and are only
available at that one pitch.
If you plan on doing similar pieces of music with this library then you
will find it useful. If you are planning on having it sing a bunch of
lyrics then you'll probably be disappointed.
Hope this helps in your decision.

Does anyone know if using a Canopus firewire box to output a Quicktime movie
streamed from my internal ide drive will aversely affect the performance of
streaming EXS samples from a Firewire drive? They would be on seperate FW
ports.
FYI, I'm using G4 Quicksilver dual gig and LAP 6.1, TDM, Mix Plus.

Yes, a very helpful assessment. No, I don't expect to ever (literally) be
using samples to create lyrics, but with my experiences with vocal samples
until now just being able to move from one note to another would be an
improvement! Sounds like there is definitely some usefulness to be had
here. Thanks,

Just to be clear here, moving from one note to another still involves a
little
work with the first part of the library as there are no intervals recorded
(other than the performance files). Working with the envelopes as well as a
bit of reverb helps to hide some of the problems. Having said that, I have
found that it doesn't require very much work at all though. DIVA Extended
offers some intervals which will help quite a bit in terms of achieving some
realism.
I don't know if you've contacted Francis Belardino (developer of the
library)
but he is very helpful and quick to respond. He also encourages and very
much
appreciates suggestions.
Good luck with it and feel free to ask more questions if you like.

Gary,
Are there differences in the programs provided for the EXS on the SAM
website? I just converted them off the CDs using CDXtract and they
seem
to
work fine. Any advantages to the Web EXS progs? What I found with
using
either the web lot or the EXS converter is that you get a lot of options
in
one big folder and finding things was not all that easy.
Dear James et al,
The biggest advantage is the use of the "release samples."
Meaning after you let go of the horn you will hear a natural decay.
Otherwise it is pretty much the same. I fell in love with the Sam Horns
when I first got them, did a big soundtrack where I used them on every
cue. And now I swear I here a difference between the exs24 update and
the original giga version. SO I have gone back and reconverted my giga
version and I use that. SO I guess "one man's ceiling is another man's
floor."

Agree, the piano has great sound ( suffers from too much reverb on
demo!), the solo guitar sound is good but on the comping it doesn't
work, not muted enough... it's messy anyway.

I wanna convert my sample library to EXS24 format. I was using an
MPC3000 and an EMU ESI4000. CDextract says it will work with both
formats and here is the key, the sounds are on 5 1/4" Syquest carts and
Zip 250 carts. Again CDextract says it will read the syquest and zip
disks, but all my info on chickensys just says CD-ROMS....Anyone ever do
this? Will it be a simple no nonsense conversion?

Can I also suggest doing a search at the Northern Sounds forum

if you haven't done so already.
I know the developer of the library posts to the forum. It's an
excellent resource for picking up news and views on sample librariers
(as well as DAW orchestration).

Translator supports any peripheral and communication protocol on any
operating system.
CD-ROM, CD-R, any removable or fixed hard drive, MO Drive, USB, Firewire,
SCSI
Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2K/XP
Mac OS 8.6, 9.x, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3
(The only exception is pre-OSX with SCSI, the workaround is to use Toast to
create an image (what we exclusively call Virtual Drives), and Translator
can easily work off of that.
We support E3/ESi as a source, and also MPC. On the Mac, not MPC yet,
that's slated for inclusion next week; it just got in the PC version.

EMU ESI and MPC are supported by all version of CDXtract (Win, Mac Classic
and OSX)
Moreover CDXtract can read partitioned MPC disks and let you read and
convert all
your MPC partitions, not just the first one !

I'd just lose that guitar (it's stepping on everything) and turn up
the bass. But I agree, the piano sounds really great.

Thanks for the compliments and comments!
Personally I probably would have done the guitar rhythm a bit
differently with a steady 4/4 chunk rhythm, which is more along the
line of Freddie Green. Alan's syncopated guitar rhythm style in this
demo is an appropriate style and is the type of guitar rhythm that he
is accustomed to hearing. Alan has had several years experience
playing with some of the best musicians in the country.
All the best,
