Ned,
When BT talked about "fixing" the audio, is he talking about
recycling and
then quantizing or is he talking about doing strip silence in Logic and
then quantizing/moving regions around (I know, similar...).
It sounds like he is using Logic's audio editor???? Here's an excerpt from
his page:
"he used Logic Audio's built-in audio editor to perform surgery on the
drum
patterns. He tweaked every peak, such as the kick and clap transients, to
play exactly on the beat, thus making the loops sample accurate-a process
that involved some time stretching (the process of speeding up or slowing
down a sound without altering its pitch) and cutting of segments
surrounding the waveform peaks. "
Anyway, any ideas?

Well, that would seem to answer that question... except that if you read
the notes in the booklet, you'll find this:
Programs and equipment used: KYMA, Logic Audio[...] Acid, Reason,
ReCycle... [etc].
I, for one, would not use Logic's built-in editor alone for this kind of
work, if only because it only has one level of undo, and edits performed
there are destructive.
Anyhow, regardless of how BT did it, you too can work your loops to
perfection... if you have the discipline!

I guess that was my point. Working in that edit window is painful! I don't
see how he does it.
The only thing I can imagine is that he recycles, then edits each region
start time.
That's the only think I can imagine!
Now where does he find the time to do all of those things he does!

>VSL + EXS24 + G5 2Ghz 8 GB that is the question !
The answer is: Oh Yeah!!!!!
Performance should improve dramatically. More RAM (8Gb) means lots
more VSL instruments, if everything can be optimised properly.
It will take some time before this happens though...

What's the difference between the audio and akai versions of this?
Since they are just loops, why would the mapping make much of a
difference, ie: a 100 dollar difference?

I would guess it's to do with "groove control." Probably the Akai
version
has each beat mapped to a key. You then import the sequence for that groove
into the sequencer, and when you play it back on the Akai channel, the
groove plays correctly at the speed of your sequencer - any speed within
reason. Something like Recycle. Actually, exactly like Recycle. The extra
$100 is probably for the effort to break all the grooves out into a Recycle
or Groove Control format.

In other words, how many machines will one 8GB Mac replace.
Right now, one Giga PC and one dual gig Quicksilver (both with 1.5GB
of RAM) load essentially the same amount of VSL. I'm getting 180
stereo voices off a Firewire drive on the Mac, and the PC gets the
Giga max 160 mono voices.
You'll be able to load more programs into 8GB of RAM, but you'll
still need to run the voices off multiple drives and busses. And then
the question is whether it's still cheaper to buy Giga PCs than to
buy all that RAM!
So the answer to Cyril's question is that we'll have to wait and see.

Sorry to dissapoint you James (and others), but no, the AKAI version of
Beatz certainly does not have a sliced-up version of the beats. AFAIK, the
audio and AKAI are the same, only the AKAI is mapped out. Someone with the
hande Ed has asked this very same question to Doug Rogers (head of
East-West) on the East-West Forum of the excellent Northern Sounds sample
discussion web site. You can follow the thread here:

hi all,
i discovered that a sample from my original exs sample library called
HHLoopz has gone missing. i know i had it cuz a tune was originally built
around it. but not found on any of my drives... does anyone know where to
secure this? or a reload of the original complete exs library? when i look
at
the list of patches that were to be included, mine own directory seems
incomplete, and i'm missing my original disc.

Maybe I'm paranoid, but I've just upgraded to LAP 6.1 and all my
sampler instruments are in my Logic 5 folder. Now I've put an alias to the
Logic 5 location in the folder of the same name in Logic 6 folder, but
really
I want to move the sampler instruments folder over to the Logic 6 folder
completely, but I'm afraid that next time I open up a song my EXS plugin
will
be empty because the songs all reference the Logic 5 folder. What do I do?

There's a program called MPC Convert that will convert MPC to aiff or SD2.
It's shareware. Do a web search you should find it.

as long as you have a link from the Logic 6.1 sampler instruments
folder to your .exs files there is no problem... put your folders
wherever you want. put an alias of them in"Logic 6 series" sampler
instruments folder, that's all. or even put your sampler instruments
directly into this folder.

Well then...doesn't seem worth it does it! Go for the audio version and
slice and dice in Recycle. What a waste of time! You'd think BT would have
been on top of this. Check out some of the Skippy's stuff on Spectrasonics
site. Excellent grooves, nicely sliced with Groove Control and you can
reshuffle the beats any way you like to create new grooves. I've done a few
movie cues where I just took the groove control version of one of his beats
and created an entire new bizarre sequence at a totally different tempo.
Great system.

Wow. I tried to convert a Boulder Sounds group from Kurzweil to EXS using
Translator, and it put big thumps at the front of all the samples and ruined
all their fadeups. Totally useless. Haven't tried CDXtract for it. I went
back to just using my Kurzweil 2500. Inconvenient, but accurate.

Yeah...I've had some of that....but CDXtract wouldn't do it at all. I
