It didn't wor for me. I tried it on 9.2.2 and 10.2.6 to no avail. I tried
everything and
neither Logic nor CDXtract converts it.

The EXS convertor wants to see an Akai S-1000/3000 CD-ROM. This is a
proprietary format that is not read normally by a computer, and the
only way to make one of these CD's is to make a hard drive with the
Akai itself or create one with Translator (see below).
My guess is that you have Akai S-5000 Programs and Samples (.akp
and .wav). (You could have Pulsar: .p+.s, or MESA .s3p+wav, but my
money is on the S-5000 stuff).
There isn't any easy free way, no, since it takes some smarts and
technology and luck and perhaps a breakfast burrito (or two) to
convert the S-5000 format back down to the S-3000 format. But there
is a way... only if you have a PC or have use of one.
First download the Awave Demo, go to www.fmjsoft.com. You can convert
the S-5000 files to Pulsar .p and .s files within the limits of the
time-restricted demo. I don't know how good this conversion is, but
hey, it's free.
Once you do that, download the Translator Demo (please read the note
below), create a Virtual Drive, format it to Akai (see instructions,
of course), and drag and drop the Pulsar files onto the Akai Virtual
Drive. Then burn it to a CD, and then have the EXS read it (it will),
and you are there.
Translator Windows allows unlimited reading and writing of any Akai S-
1000/3000 type file, which are categorized as (Pulsar) .p, .sts, .s
(or .wav); (MESA) .prg .s3p, and .wav, and lone .ak1 or .ak3 files
(these contain in one file any Akai Programs and their referenced
Samples).
There isn't any way on the Mac, at least not yet.
Please note two things: on earlier demos the reading and writing was
somewhat restricted, we have taken that off and will post a new demo
as soon as...
www.chickensys.com has been down since Thursday - yet another
computer meltdown that all of us are so familiar with. (And it always
happens right before the holidays!) Hopefully it'll be up ASAP.

Mark,
I am sorry to hear that you have been unable to import our Malmsjö
sample into EXS. We do have many customers that are currently using
the Malmsjö with EXS. The only reason for this problem, that I can
think of is that there may be a defect to your discs. If that is the
case you will get a new set. Let me know.

Thanks Ned. By articulation info I guess Im trying to get ESX to
automatically translate everything that my gigasampler does. For
example the Maestro Tools Auto Alternator feature in Garritan Strings
for playing alternate bowstrokes, can ESX emulate this or will I have
to try and program this function manually.
Thanks
Ged
Thanks, that makes sense. I just have one more question, though.
Would it be better to go from AKAI format to Pulsar format using
Awave, back to AKAI format using Translator, and to EXS24 format
using EXS24 -OR- going from AKAI to Pulsar using Awave, and then
straight to EXS24 using Translator (if Translator supports that
conversion)? Thanks in advance

That's the no cost method.

The Demo doesn't do that, because it's a "translation," whereas
Pulsar really IS the Akai format, there's no data-changing. The
Creamware Pulsar sort of "hijacked" the format for it's own uses.
It
just serves your purposes now.
We do, though, sell a low cost version of Transaltor called the EXS-
24 Edition, which is $79.95 and just converts from everything to EXS-
24 only.
Duh, I had the files backward, when I reversed the combination order, it
worked like a charm. I'm so slow, thanks for the help guys.

I'd like any edits I make on the EXS24 to be song-independent and so I
followed the manual's instructions on setting up a sub-folder named
"Sampler
Instruments" inside the song folder and copying the related sampler
instrument files into this folder.
Just like it says, a new hierarchical menu item appears within the EXS24's
sampler instrument flip menu containing the song's name and any instrument
entries copied to this folder earlier.
However, any edits I make don't have any effect at all on the patches from
this new menu. I don't understand why.
If I select the same intrument and patch from the original (master)
selection patch menu, the edits
work BUT, I don't want to write to the MASTER file,
I want the edits to be song-independent.
Anyone using the EXS24 know how to make this work right?
Thanks.

I have had the same problem and I think the real issue is, that the
EXS gets confused if there are two preset files with the same name.
If you add something to the name when you do a save as... in the
instrument editor window and then save it to your songs folder you
should have no problem. Make sure that after doing this you actually
have that file selected in the sampler interface.
Hope this helps
Cheers

i just open tha master instrument, make edits, don't save them in exs, but
save my logic song. the exs edits are saved with the song.
no hassle
this is on mac..
Well, I tried what you just said. Don't know how it works for you and not
me. What ends up happening is, I'll say NO to saving the exs file and, Yes,
it will save the settings with the song but when I go to open up a new song
file again, that sample is now in the same way it was left when it was
edited in the last song. In other words, the master file itself gets edited
as well instead of only in the specific song.
I'm running logic 6 on Mac OS X 10.6.2

well... i don't know... what i do is this - let's say i create a new
instrument, "steel guitar" for instance. i make this instrument
exactly the
way i want it with all the settings in the exs. i save the instrument in the
sampler instruments folder (in the logic folder).
then, let's say i start new a song, where i want the "steel
guitar"
instrument to be transposed. instead of making a new instrument (calling it
eg steel guitar-transposed-new song) i just tweak it as i please in the exs.
only in the graphic "sampler display" look thing tho, not in EDIT
mode.
maybe this is what u mean. i'm only changing stuff like transpose,
pitchwheel, ADSR etc... not keyboardlayouts and stuff in the EDIT mode
window. after that i save my new song and my exs edits are saved with it -
and ONLY with that song-in the song file.
i'm not sure where u are trying to edit but in the graphic "sampler
display"
i can edit "without" saving (other than saving the song of
course).
/nassau
... I should've reported back to the list with this... ned
helped me with the conversion, it worked first time and
it all works lovely now.
I'm very happy with my wonderful new dark malmsjo
piano, result.

Here's the answer, clear as day, right from the manual. How I missed this
earlier I don't know. Anyway...
"When saving any newly created or modified Sampler Instruments, ensure
that
you use the "Save as" function and browse to the "Sampler
Instruments"
folder inside the new song folder."
That's it.

Hi y'all
My Audiosuite plug-ins work fine and dandy within ProTools LE.
However, I believe they are supposed to work in Logic as well.
They don't show up! What must I do?
Thanks in advance
Mac OS9, G4 933, Logic 4.8.1

1st question.. are they RTAS? If so, your out of luck, 2nd question.
Are you running DAE as your audio engine in Logic? You need to to get
AS working.

I think the current way to navigate through your sound is absolutely
hopeless. Very annoying. Why don't they implement a drawer or add a
panel on the bottom (for MacOS X) which works the same as column view
in the finder? This would be much more logical and much more handy.

Does anyone know where I can download the .exs files from the Emagic
Factory Sounds CD?
Here's the deal...
I installed OS X exclusively on my Mac (that means no more OS 9).
The CD has all the .aif samples, but requires me to run an installer
that will only run in OS 9 or classic mode to install.
I only need the .exs files to get my "Factory Sounds" up and
running.
Can anyone help?

Hi , has anyone successfully converted the Post Grandioso Bosendorfer
290 to use for the EXS24 on a mac, I just received the cdrom from them
and it contains a self extracting exe. file , I would assume there's no
way to open this on a mac . Can anyone suggest anything other than
using a pc to do it.
TIA mike
