Subject: [EXS] [LAM] using Groove Control
Message #7227
I recently purchased my first Spectrasonics Groove Control sample CD and am trying to figure out how to bring Groove control arrange tracks into an Autoload set up and still keep the settings. So far, I start out with the Autoload file, then open the Groove Control midi file and copy/paste the individual midi tracks into the Autoload. Then, I'll rename the Autoload. This process seems cumbersome and time consuming. If I want to mix and match form the six or so Groove tracks, I need to copy and paste them all into separate audio instrument tracks. There must be a better way? Dan

Hi Dan, Did you know that you can drag and drop a MIDI file straight into Logic's arrange window? I have lots of Spectrasonics stuff and I have an alias to the respective folders of MIDI files in my Apple menu (on Mac obviously). When I find a groove I like (by auditioning the mp3's they usually provide) I just go striaght to the folder and drag the file into my new song and work. Dunno 'bout on PC........ Regards - Colin

That sounds easier. I'll try dragging a whole group from one set, one by one onto different Audio Instrument channels. Thanks. Subject: Recording to audio with EXS
Message #7232
When using EXS24 virtual instruments, I can always hear the instrument in record and playback (set up as an audio instrument, using MIDI controller to play into the virtual instrument). However, I can't seem to record to audio. All my MIDI instruments go easily to audio upon record; I have them set up through OMS. What step am I missing to record virtual instruments to audio? For that matter, I can't seem to grasp how to mix multiple audio tracks to one stereo track. Thanks, Larry P.S. I have read the FAQs, but maybe I missed something.

I can't seem to make the EXS playback the sample with the original'UMMMPHHH'. Is there a 'reset all parameters' function? Or is there some other way to get my sounds back to the original 'Meatiness'. I didn't notice too much of a difference so far though - I mean, I can only spot it if I A/B MkI and MkII bounces. There's some MkI default setting option in MkII, but of course that won't bring your allready adjusted settings back... Regards, Sascha

hi all tried to ask this question over on the LUG list and was promptly sent packing to this one ;) anyhow, i use recycle quite a bit to convert audio loops to midi, for editing capabilities. when i open the exs24 however, to play the individually assigned parts of the loop, the parts are assigned to the last few keys on the left of my keyboard. unfortunately, since i have a korg ms2000 which isnt a full sized keyboard, parts end up inevitably being assigned to keys which arent actually there. ive tooled around with reassigning, and almost have gotten it a few times, but i always end up with keys being all jumbled up and playing over each other. is there some easy way to do this that im not aware of? thanks for your time corey exs24 and logic platinum 5.1, pc

Open your keycommand list, scroll to the EXS section, assign a KC to "move zones incl. root key" (there's 2, one for moving zones up, the other one to move them down). I am using CTRL + L/R arrows for that. Then, straight after you imported your recycled loop, do a CTRL+A (select all zones if they aren't allready) and move them to your likings, using the KC mentioned. Sascha

Message #7245
HI there Chris hope your on a Mac, I don't know PC > EXS24... How do I get those > sounds into the EXS? > > Take care, > Chris M. I'm new to EX ..bout 6 months, I'm just starting to get to grips with it though there's a lot I don't know, still learning Did you download SF2 or Akai ? For these samples SF2 is fine and the Akai's are just wav files so no conversion needed, I think the EX only converts Akai from CD? Example for SF2: Stuffit will auto unzip into a folder(look inside)for -SF2 file Place the SF2 file into your sample instruments folder, preferably you want to create a main folder for the instruments. (you can rename the folders to what u like)(even after creating) As long as your .exs files are in your Sampler Instr..folder, and your .wav/.aif's are in your EXsamples folder, you can rename, change position Etc..sorry not entirely true...if you drag out an instrument on to the desktop, the EX still finds them - haha! Mine looks like this----> Sampler Instruments(folder=open) 01-Drum 02-Bass 03-Synth Pad 04-Synth FX 05-Synth Lead 06-Synth Arps 07-FM7sounds 08-Sound Effects 09-Sound Effects-Loops 10-Orchestra Symphony 11-Orchestra Instruments 12-Choirs 13-Organ 14-Guitar 15-Ethic(folder open) <--- dudy-bohemienbagpipe.sf2 So...place the SF2 file in EG: ethnic folder. Open up EX24 on an Audio Instrument track Refresh menu-select instrument Find the file, dudy sf2, click as if your selecting it as an instrument viola! ex24 converts and creates .exs files Now look at your files--- 15-Ethic(folder open) -------dudy-bohemienbagpipe(folder=open)<----new created Dudy.exs <-----new file created by EX24 dudy-bohemienbagpipe.sf2 (the original sf2 file sits here- you can delete after conversion) it actually creates a few .exs files, you'll have to sort and decide which are repeats. Now comes the tricky bit, and I understand if you don't get it first go. Open up your internal folder again(Ijust have it sitting open) You'll find a folder called SoundFont samples. OPEN it, you'll find all the files there in .wav form. Now place these in your EXsamples folder under the appropriate folder (you create). Or you can leave them there.... My EXsamples Folder---> Samples(NEW)(folder) ---dudy-bohemienbagpipe(folder) ---syrien-framedrum(folder) ---ud-lute(folder) Inside these I place the wav files I've created this folder so I can stick all the new samples I download here till I sort them out, once I'm happy, I'll move them to their own folder, still inside EXsamples folder of course, don't worry the EX24 will always find them. Go back to the EX24 open up the new dudy.exs file - and there it be. A small warning here. When the conversion takes place, all the root note info, range of notes etc, is in the sf2 file which the EX24 either converts successfully or not. This is what I do. After you have opened up your new .exs file, have a play, does it sound OK or not? If not you'll have to click edit in the EX24, trash the instrument and build a new one. &^&&&*&&%$# duck give me a break...phew what a mess but as my friend says to me... Welcome to the bleeding edge... ; ) I found the dudy converted OK though with a few repeats(Itrashed them) the ud lute was OK-same thing again but the Syrian drum was a hassle-worth it though. the EX24 somehow created over a hundred zones huh? obviously too many for a half dozen wav files. After I trashed the instrument I just remapped chromatically it tames it down to the first octave of keys on my midi keyboard. Later on I can expand or build any new Syrian drum I want by select any of the wav files. I hope this makes sense... Best Paul

Hey, problem: I use a server on a network which contains the sampler instruments and the Samples I use. I use the instruments and samples from within another Mac, and the samples are thus transferred through the network to my RAM. Now, often, when I choose an instrument from within my EXS, it says: "Sample X'" was found several times. Then I can select 1 of three of the SAME options. It keeps asking and asking, and depending on how big the instrument is, it can take up to 20 minutes before I actually can use it. I'm sure that I have no duplicate samples on the serverdisk. Anyone with the same problem?? gr Jos

Thx for the bounce suggestion. Here's my dilemma. When AudioInst 1 is set to be Cha = "Instrument 1", then "bounce" doesn't appear on the master fader. If, instead, Cha = "Output 1-2", bounce does appear, but when I click "bnce" I get a message that there is nothing to bounce. This is in contrast to the behavior in MIDI where I set up the track mixer, hit "record" for Audio 1 and get an audio recording either as SDII or AIFF. What's my missing step? Cheers, Larry
