They are not fixed.
Open the EXS instrument editor, then go to "Edit >
Preferences". There you
can assign a lot of possible MIDI commands to select the previous/next
instrument.

hello everybody,
i'm actually using an icebook500, emi2|6 and logic 4.8.1, exs.. etc
I desperately need automation right now so i should upgrade to logic 5.
Problem is i've been told logic5 is much more cpu demanding, and with my
icebook500 and 4.8.1 i'm alredy on the edge (just 1 platinumverb and some
compressors before running out of cpu).
So i guess if i upgrade to logic5 i'll have automation but NO cpu for a
single reverb!¿? (anyone has tried this setup?)
Therefore i'm thinking about going with the mbox and ptoolsLE for recording
and mixing (as the icebook500 runs PTools LE fine with automation and
several reverbs, comps, eqs..) and use logic just for midi
composing/notation.
So, does the digi mbox really work with logic -with propagama or whatever
driver- under low latency settings? low latency enough to play live exs24
from a midi KB?
thanx in advance,
jindrich.

Maybe someone can clarify. My EXS is dated end of 2001 and it came with
Gold 4.8. I can't find this menu choice mentioned by Sascha, it isn't
there. However the "previous/next instrument" commands are visible
in
the key commands window and can be assigned. The result is that you can
walk through the instrument edit screens of instruments allready in a
song. I don't find this very helpfull. I would like to browse and listen
through all available instruments in a directory or so. Is this V5
functionality?

Here is what I do:
1) Open the edit window, not the graphic window
2) Click on the instrument selection window at the top once
3) Now when you use the numerical + and - keys you select the next or
previous EXS instrument in the sample instrument folder
This method seems to be base on Logic's convention that whenever you
have a non-graphical data field you can use the + and - keys to
change it's value after having highlighted it by clicking on it.
Beware that if you click for too long a window with all your sample
instruments open. In fact this window can be helpful too if you
didn't know it already.
Let me know if that was helpful.
Kind regards,
Soren

Yeah well, this isn't related to the EXS anyways.

Hm, this defenitely is no V5 functionality, it was introduced in either 4.7
or 4.8, I don't remember clearly.
I would wonder about it, but maybe this functionality hasn't made it into
the Gold versions?

Hi Eric, Thanks for the detailed post regarding the production of loop
libraries. I feel a big change is coming in the way this material is
marketed. I don't think we'll ever see the likes of yours and Skippy's work
released on CD again. Certainly not of that high standard. I know you are
going the virtual instrument route but just when you think the way is clear
along comes Phatmatik Pro and something tells me the path could take another
turn. Have you checked it out yet? The possibilities are mind blowing. The
things I've already done with Burning Grooves inside that plug......phew!!
BTW for all you insatiable loopaholics, Phatmatik Pro makes it possible to
access the whole Acid Library world from within Logic. Those discs are
reasonably priced......plus you can access your existing loop library and
slice it up, pan the slices, add delay, modulate, comb filter, distort and
then save it with your song, did I mention it locks to the host
tempo?........and it's only $100. I sound like a Yahoo advertisement.

... The EXS manual says version 2.0 (september 2001) and doesn't refer
to any Logic version. So I guess everyone is equal in that respect. What
number is on the EXS shipped with V5?

Isn't there some confusion here as to what window we're talking
about? Open an EXS instance, and in the EXS interface, click the
Edit button left of the green display that shows the loaded
instrument's name. That opens an instrument editor, which has it's
own menu's. In one of those menu's you find the "Preferences" in
which the prev/next stuff is located.
If it isn't there, I seriously think something's wrong with your
install. My ZoneSwitch environment crashing on you also made me
wonder if you didn't have some sort of strange problem...
And in reply to Sascha: I don't believe for a second that there is
such a beast as an EXS-gold vs an EXS-Platinum. That would be
bizarre...

I agree, PPro is fantastic!
Since I got it ReCycle is collecting dust over here.
And I want to mention one further function which made my jaws drop all the
way down when I checked it out for the first time: You can drag'n'drop
slices straight from PPro to *any* sampler or drumsampler supporting d'n'd!
So, in practice: You slice a loop in PPro, select all the slices, drag them
onto, say, Battery or DR-008, then drag the PPro MIDI file onto your
drumsampler's track and there you go, wow! After that you can use your
drumsamplers "preview in context" function to partially replace
the
individual slices with others!
Seriously, for anybody into loopmangling, PPro is a must have. And no, I am
not working for bitshift audio.

Perhaps on Windows, but not on Mac. The EXS24 opens in a float window
and the +/- keys don't work in such a case. A Mac user may
accidentally alter another value, whichever was the last one chosen.
Pity......
Thanks for the info on this thread though. I've chosen to use note
no's as my triggers: I just use the very top 2 keys on my controller
keyboard (notes 107 & 108) as I don't generally go up that high! :-)

I hope not... Anyway, I guess I'll upgrade to Gold 5.2/EXS soon and
maybe a clean install will perform magic here.

Dear list,
I'm trying to figure out how to use the EXS24 in a live setup, along with a
Roland Octapad.
I'd like to start and stop loops, along with some single sounds. As far as
I've tried, there is only the compromise between one shot OR loop. I'd need
both of them combined, sort of.
The manual states: "The EXS offers all You'd expect from a hardware
sampler, ..." even my old e-64 can achieve what I'm trying to do.
Am I missing something or is there a workaround?

That is funny. I love the EXS24, but it lacks much of what my Ensoniq ASR-10
does.

Yeah, that does it. But in true Emagic it is a bit convoluted to
figure out how to use and only provides half the flexibility one
might want. I use two keys at the extreme end of my keyboard set up
for the task. Why one could not simply use key strokes on the
computer keyboard I do not know. Less gymnastics that way.
Can one create an environment that takes two key strokes like "+"
and "-" and convert them into data that the EXS would understand
as
patch selectors?

Hi Sascha,

What's the difference between PhatMatic Pro and PhatMatic Free?
(Other than the $99)
I was at the web site, but couldn't really get to a comparative feature
list.
You know, save disabled, times out, test tones, whatever...
Just trying to decide if I'm ready to pop for the $99!
Anybody?
Thanks

PhatFree won't let you actually slice loops. It will
only let you open their "PhatLoops," some of which you
can get with Computer Music magazine and I believe
they are releasing a library of loops for you to
purchase.
The Pro version lets you slice a loop or open an
Acidized loop with the slices already made.
Also, the Pro version is 4-part multitimbral I
believe.
That's all I can remember. I've played with the Demo
of the Pro version and it's very cool...

Hi Igor,
Yes, you can drag slices straight to the arrange too.
Actually, you can drag them anywhere if the target supports it
(Explorer/Finder, other samplers, the arrange, whatever).

can anyone give me their two cents worth of suggestions for great sample
cds--for acoustic/real drums? (including loops or with groove control would
be helpful). anything over the last year or two? (as i have stuff from the
liquid/buring grooves and the first skippy's timeframe...)
many thanks.

Without a doubt
1)Backbeat 2)RetroFunk 3) Stark Raving Beats.
Money well spent.
I would suggest NOT to buy.
1)Return To Planet Of The Breaks.
2)Chameleon Drums 3)Drum Necessities
Money down the drain. My opinion only.

I got several environment wishes, all competing for 1st place, and
this is one of them... No, you can't use the computer keyboard at
all to control anything in the environment, and that's a f'ing shame.

It's got a whole bunch of online sample calculators on it.

My old sample calc won't work on XP (tried everything) so enjoy

Same here.
Logic Audio Platinum Legit 4.81, EXS24 legit
PowerMac G4 dual800
In above mentioned window (Title="EXS24 instrument editor"), under
its own
EDIT menu, I see Preferences. It opens a window with the following options:
SR Conversion
Sample Storage
Velocity Curve
AKAI Convert thru
Search samples in
EXS24 TDM Mode
Read key note from
Key note at filename pos
But nothing about program change or prev/next stuff.
What am I missing?
About using numerical +/- keys in any "clicked-once" non-graphical
field,
this works, and I didn't really remember we had this functionality in Logic.
Made my day :)))

Apart from TDM mode that is similar to what I have on Gold 481 windows.
Well, there you have it, the *mistery of the EXS releases*. My guess:
Logic 5 owners have a somewhat different feature set. If only someone at
Emagic would tune in once in a while and clarify all this...
