I can't for the life of me work out what I've done wrong but I can't
get any of my exs sequences to play back despite being able to
play them and record them normally from the keyboard. I think
maybe I've hit a key command unknowingly and toggled some
playback switch. When I press play the little midi meter next to
the track shows activity but there's no audio output. All other midi
tracks play back normally.
Any help would be gratefully received

Wouldn't it be an idea to start writing emails to Emagic about the file
conversion promisses? There are pll outside Emagic working on it
(chickensys) but that's PC only and not ready yet. Let's flood Emagic with
complaints. I am getting kinda tired of their policy not to listen to the
users. It shouildn't be too difficult to write a conversion application so
... why don't they do it?

Willem Cramer wrote:

Stay calm, Willem - mailbombing somebody has never ever been a good idea!
Personally I am waiting on more conversions, too - but e.g. I´d like
to
have ASR-10 conversion, some others need Roland and so on... sounds like
a difficult task to decide which ones are necessary and which not.
Speaking of 3rd party progs, it has taken a looooong time until Chicken
Systems
have had their "Translator" up and running - and they are still
fixing bugs
despite adding new features. The whole Translator is more expensive (at
least
for us in Germany) than the EXS-24 sampler, another point.
And as for Emagic not listening: They may not write back to you, but be
asured that they *are* listening. Being part of the beta test program,
I know very well about what I´m talking here. And there *are* things
to
come for the EXS-24 as well...
One last thing: Steinberg have "announced" something
"secret" and a lot of
insiders tend to think that it will be a competitive sampler to the EXS-24.
We´ll see what it can, when it´s out - and we´ll see how
Emagic reacts on
this approach.
Thomas
I appreciate you remarks, Thomas. This is helpful insight. And, if Emagic is
"listening", here's a couple wishes for the Emagic Santa Claus:
1. Global toggle of "one shot" parameter.
2. Control over the starting note position for multiple
"chromatic" sample
imports. It sucks that I can't quickly add a bunch of samples to a zone of
drums. Basically, I have to "re-dump" all the samples to the zone
or import
AND place them one at a time. This may seem overly-critical, but quick
importation is the primary reason I purchased the EXS24, switching from the
ASR-10.
3. An exquisite capability would be being able to drag a sample in the upper
screen to a new position (thereby automatically) altering the root not
appropriately. Zone designation in the textual controls would work the same
as before (moving the zones would not affect the root note setting). This
would diffuse my frustration over not being able to control multiple imports
to the extent mention in request #2 because dragging and positioning sample,
without a bunch of rework, would be a wet dream.
4. Note glide in logic VST instruments(and the EXS24) would work like it
does with the ES1.
5. VST inserts could be applied "per zone". Can you imagine how
amazing that
would be?! ...reverb on zone two (a bunch of snares) with harmonic bass
enhancement on zone one (kicks)--sorry, let me stop...
6. Separate key velocity amp controls for "each zone and sample",
in
addition to each instrument (which could be deactivated if samples were
controlled by zone or sample). This would really add to far more realistic
multi-sampled strings, pianos, and other acoustic instruments.
7. Finally, of course, the ever-requested improvements in sample importation
(but that's too obvious isn't it?).
There you have it. We're only seven steps away from the "perfect
sampler"!!!
EMAGIC, I HOPE YOU ARE LISTENING. I made half of these requests about 6
months ago (or whenever it first came out).
These things would definitely keep me from migrating to the dark side if
Steinberg does in fact come out with a competitor. Logic still hasn't fixed
it's looping problems and lack of compatibility with quick control over
velocity and other quick-arrange controls (in the arrange window). These are
tiring problems. Even so, Emagic, I still love you!
Very Sincerely,
Jer

Hmmmm... impressive, indeed! A lot of what I have been asking Emagic for
months. Emagic better get its ass in gear (no offense), but I bet they don't
have crappy looping and midi override problems. The EXS is a great
achievement, but it's a competitive world and the HALion looks very
attractive.

At least now Emagic has a very clear "to do" list.
The variety of filters and ability to use them on separate samples is
huge.
I love the EXS though. I still have not turned on my Emu since I got
it.

Hmmm, but what about your Emu libraries? Aren't there some sounds there that
you want to use, and if so do you manually import them into EXS? I have done
this for many of the Wizzoo drum samples that came with the LM4 but it's a
bit tedious.

Cool. Shame it's not a native mac app as well. I tip eventually that someone
will come out with the definitive Sample format translator program that will
send your library seamlessly in any direction - from any format to any other
format. Heck maybe we may even see a standardised sample instrument format.
Like the midi file format sort of thing but for complex multisampled
instruments...
Just dreaming...
I got an email from the author telling me he is working on it, such great
news :))))

That's news to me. Currently Translator has been on the market for 16
months and has a user base of over 1000 users, most of them pretty
satisfied, according to their own feedback. And most - no, all - software
has bugs that are continually in the process of being eradicated. Chicken
Systems has a reporting department that handles all bug complaints within
24 hours and if possible sends out a fix within that time period.

The Translator EXS Edition is in the process of being released, with a list
price of $74.95. The current build of Translator has translations of
Roland, EOS, ESi, and Ensoniq included. I'll give more news as soon as it's
released. From what I understand there will be a press release tomorrow.

Hello everybody, I have just installed my exs24 but it doesn't
work. I have tried to load an exs sample but no sound play from
the instrument editor (the keyboard) or my midi keyb.
So, i have tried to convert an akai sample, the prelisten work, I
can hear the suond, but after the conversion the sample doesn't
play.
What can I do? Which is the way to configure the exs 24 into
Logic Audio with a digi 001?
Thank you very much and sorry for my english.
Gianni
You can't play from the edit window unless the appropriate instrument track
is also (already) selected in the arrange window. If you have selected a
track in the arrange window and still can't hear anything, the problem is
probably not the EXS. You may be way ahead on this, but I thought I'd
mention it anyway.

Try throwing out your logic preferences (if you are on a Mac). That will
clear any inadvertent change in parameters you may have made. Off hand, I
don't know where these preferences are stored on the PC for logic.

Hi Jer, thanks for your reply, I have followed your suggestion but the exs
doesn't play.
In the arrange window I select an audio track and change it in Insrtument,
then click on it, open the mixer window and in the little window of the
track (above the insert) select the EXS 24.
Opened the sampler, I click on the editor and appear the keyboard, I load a
sample... nothing play.
Is this the right way? I think yes, because the other synths plug-in in
this way works.
Thank you again

Don't select an audio track. What version of Logic are you running? Is it
Mac or PC? You should have an audio instrument track available for
selection. You may have done this, but I couldn't tell exactly what you
meant by "changing an audio track in instrument". That statement
doesn't
make much sense to me. There are dedicated tracks made specifically for VST
instruments which are completely different from audio tracks (this method is
completely different from ReWire which imploys tweaked audio tracks to allow
external soft-synths to play through the Logic mixer). The dedicated VST
instruments should pop up on the default "new song" setup in both
the
arrange window (usually two of them by default) and in the environment (all
sixteen). Trying do this in an existing song may not work, especially if you
are on a Mac using OMS. This issue gets complicated so I won't go into it.
Just make sure that you are using a new song environment, that you are
running Logic 4.5 (at least / 4.3 is the minimum), and that you are
selecting a real "instrument track". Also, go into the environment
window
the channel strip of the appropriate "instrument channel" (there
should be
sixteen of these). Make sure the output on the channel strip is pointing to
the main outs (or to a bus is you are doing a submix like with drums for
instance. If you do this make sure the bus is then pointing to the main
outs). By clicking at the top of the channel strip, you can also control
input allocation on the left/bottom side of the window.
If you are on a Mac, your OMS or FreeMIDI could be screwed up, but I doubt
that's causing the problem since this is an internal VST instrument.
If this doesn't help, you'd better contact Logic.

Hey, this was on obvious, but good, question. Did you, in fact, also select
the instrument name in the first EXS interface that pops up? The edit screen
does not control the loading of the instrument. It is only used for editing.
You must load the instrument in the initial EXS interface and make sure you
are highlighting that instrument track in the arrange window. I'm probably
beating a dead horse here, but what the heck...

I cannot get my exs 24 to reauthorise the disc just keeps clicking
and the checking cd stays on the screen. Control Alt delete is my
only way out. Any advice will be appreciated. I have 6 days before it
expires.
