While I'm afraid I can't give you any performance tips with Windows (anyone else?), I can tell you that you should be able to get more out of logic and the EXS24 than this. I'm running Logic 4.8.1 on a Mac G3 450mhz with only 256mb ram and I can run loads of instances of the EXS24 just fine. I'm sure someone on this group can assist you. Hi Eric, > Hey Sascha....got my 5.0 running, but how do you do that audition in sync > trick with REX2 files? > > I can't remember what you said before. Please repeat the procedure. Actually there's multiple ways: - Shift+Pencil click on an audio track - the usual "old" procedure to import an audiofile straight into your arrange ("old" because now you can also drag them straight from explorer/finder). - "Add audio file" from the audio window. - Exs editor > instrument > any of the Recycle convert options. All these will play a selected .rx2 file in the current song's tempo. Additional note: On Windows (I don't know why, but this doesn't work on Macs) you can keep your EXS UI opened and select sounds while the audio file selection window is opened as well. Having said that, I have my "general purpose loops" twice on my HDD, both using the same folder tree structure, one of them are straight .rx2 files for previewing purposes, the others are allready converted EXS files. Now, whenever I find a suitable loop using the preview function, I can load it straight into the EXS as well and continue looking for a better one. If I don't find any I just close the preview window while the best one is in the EXS allready. Whenever I find a better one, I choose that in the EXS. This is a great feature that I love, but as said, so far it's only available on Windows. Regards, Sascha

Subject: 'switching within patches' in 5.2!
Message #3886
This was posted by Murray McDowall <murraymc@...> in the LUG, talking about the Logic demo he saw by Phil Jackson running 5.2 w/ Logic Control etc... "-- Got a glimpse of a set of a forthcoming set of enhancements to the EXS24 including (according to Phil) switching within patches -- eg pizz strings/ marcato Strings (a la Gigasampler) - apparently a set of enhancements to the Instrument editor are also due sometime soon." So no need to get Gigasampler anymore. Now I wonder if Kontact will actually do anything useful that can't be reproduced in Reaktor, I might only have to buy one sampler my whole life. :-) So I wonder if AKAI cd's (e.g. Peter Siedlaczek's Advanced Orchestra) come built with multiple articulations etc in the same patch, or do you have to just import each articulation separate and create the instrument manually in EXS24? I wonder if Garth will need to work with Emagic to get Translator to import this properly into the new .exs instrument format

But when I convert a Roland patch to the EXS24 format with and without the deemphasis and even though I see "de-emphasizing sample" on the progress window, every time both .wav files sound exactly the same. I don't trust my ears enough, so I used Wavelab to compare the original sample and the de-emphasized sample and there is not a single bit of difference between the 2 files. A pure placebo effect ! A pure placebo effect ! Well, there are quite a few options for the Roland Emphasis curves. I don't recall what the default settings are but there are a few options. You can have the authentic Roland curve, darker, lighter, standard (Translator's original curve for Roland coversion), special and custom. It can also be enabled or disabled as well. Is it possible that perhaps it is disabled but a message is displayed where it normally applies the de-emphasis? I tried it out when I first got Translator and it worked fine for me. I didn't compare it to a S-760 (as I don't own one anymore) but there *was* a difference. I'll have to remember to try it out again tonight when I have some time. Interesting that you're trying to make a wave here when you are the developer for Translator's main competition. I'm sure Garth could be here and other places trying to point out things that he may have found in your product but I don't see him doing that. A pure placebo effect ! Bernard...your Roland deemphasis in Cd-Xtractr doesn't work correctly...that's why there's no audible difference in the files. The Roland emphasis curve is HUGE (about 20db at 18k) so it is VERY audible and easily measurable. This is why we have used Translator for this conversion in the past, Garth has a lot of different versions of the Roland de-emph curve that have been tweaked by ear as well as by scope. You can't do it properly by numbers alone. The info that Roland has for documentation of the curve is incomplete to do it this way. This is an area that should be improved in Cd-Xtract in my opinion. (Try it with a Cymbal and you can hear the difference VERY easily). It's no placebo...that's for sure! Eric Persing Creative Director, Spectrasonics Chief Sound Designer, Roland Corp

Subject: LAPM reattaching audio files
Message #3891
Using LPM 4.8.2 I seem to have lost the connection between the exs24 instruments and the samples. Is there any way to fix this globally? So far it seems the only way to fix it is to choose each and every zone and manually rechoose the audio files. Here is what happened: I have installed an external firewire drive and copied all of my samples to that drive. After the fact, I discoverred that the EXS24 software didn't want me to do that, it wanted me to open every exs instrument and chose MOVE AUDIOFILES from the INSTRUMENT menu. I assumed that the software would operate the way the AUDIO WINDOW in Logic works: if it doesn't find a file, it comes up with a dialogue box saying it found the file somewhere and do I want to choose that file. However, in EXS24, there does not seem to be such a utility to simply ask the software to search all attached drives for the audio files you need. I have tried copying aliases of the folders I need to the place where the files used to work, but that has not worked for me. So I reinstalled the Factory presets, figuring that they would be put in the right place by the installer. And my plan was that once I had confirmed that they were working properly, I would delete the files I had copied over to the external drive way back in part 1. Ha! I chose the external drive during the install procedure, but it does not matter which exs24 factory instrument I choose, it cannot locate the correct files and always reports the audio file connected to zone #1 as 'not found.' I have spent five hours trying to figure this one out now, and I am stumped. HELP!!! John

Thank you Eric for this precious information, but you misunderstood me. I didn't say that I can't hear the difference with the deemphasis filter included in CDxtract, as a matter of fact I do hear it. I just wanted to compare it with the different deemphasis filters of Translator. That's why I tried to convert several Roland discs to various formats and with the "Authentic deemphasis" activated. And because I didn't hear the difference this time I had this simple idea to make a binary comparaison with the original samples and found that even when I clearly see "de-emphasizing" sample in the conversion process, the samples are not filtered at all. Try yourself. If you have the same problem then it's probably a very simple bug that will take less than 5 minutes to fix. I'm sure that there really is a deemphasis filter in Translator, my problem is that I cannot get it to work. What I want to do is simply convert the same Roland sample with the 2 softwares and make a binary comparaison of the 2 converted .wav files. Bernard PS : Actually I didn't use any Roland documentation to make my deemphasis filter, I have just analyzed and copied the deemphasis filter that is included in my S760, this is for me much more accurate than tweaking an EQ (moreover I don't have your ears :-)

He talked about where the EXS24 is heading -- eg toward possible Gigastudio format compatability perhaps and Roland format compatibility. At one point he flipped open the extras editor for parameters at the bottom of the EXS GUI and there were like 40 parameters instead of the 8 or 10 in 4.8. He said we might get a second page of the GUI or something. Things like velocity crossfading and switching were part of the revamp of EXS as was improving the editor. He also mentioned better access to rapidly stepping through patches --eg declare a "Performance" directory and have the option of stepping with the up and down arrows through the patches there. Hopefully we'll see these enhancements in 5.2 or perhaps later in the year. The EXS24 is such a great tool I really hope they make building instruments and auditioning patches easier. Regards, Murray
