I have this message when i try to save over a previous version of a song where the properties of the song file is checked "read only" , i usually just check "archived" and uncheck "read only". I don't know if that helps or not. matt dpdsb wrote: > I recently got a second, faster computer, an AMD 1600 with 768meg > ram. Streaming takes much more power from your CPU then memory. So now, my samples are loaded in RAM and, but when it will become streaming, there is less power for native instruments! And what about the audio tracks? They are streamed too remember. No, I hope EXS stays in RAM, really that's the best way to do it, and RAM is cheap. Renger

Here are some examples of ways I use groups: 1. Toms are loud enough in comparison with each other but all of them need to be louder against the rest of the kit: Solution: Raise the dB level of the tom group as a whole.. 2. I want to make a "mute group" (ie closed hats make open hats stop). Solution: Assign hats to the same group and tell the group that it is only allowed one voice at a time. Basically, any time you want to edit parameters of a number of sounds together - (sort of batch processing !!!) put them in a group. Another reason is to create velocity switching. If you have a set of samples with 3 or 4 levels of loudness for each note or drum -- just assign all the pp samples to one group, all the ff samples to another and so on. Then when you want to program in the velocity switching, do it in the groups so that group pp only responds to notes with a velocity between 00 and 40 say. This saves and incredible amout of time (imagine setting velocity levels for every single sample in a large piano sample set) and also if later on you want to change the response or scaling of the instrument it is very easy to edit the velocity zones of the groups. Some more purposes to use groups for: - When combining instruments it comes in very handy. I often do that to get fat layered sounds. But well, often one instrument is too loud, so I might want to reduce the level. Pretty much a timeconsuming job when doing that for each zone. But because I almost allways have all my zones assigned to groups (which will automatically be copied with the zones) I can just alter the level of the groups. - I often use two (or even more) layers of the same zone (again to get a fatter sound), just that I might detune the doubled zones. These can now be panned and levelled easily using groups. I wish there was a tuning parameter directly on groups, would make such jobs way easier to accomplish. Or well, editing of multiple zones would just do the same... I hope this will come soon. - Filter and ADSR offset. Only available for groups. Pretty great to get more interesting sounds. I might use one layer plain while another layer will run through some Filter/ADSR offset. Regards, Sascha

And what about the audio tracks? >They are streamed too remember. No, I hope EXS stays in RAM, really that's >the best way to do it, and RAM is cheap. The best solution would be to incorporate both. Remember, the real definition of "streaming" (at least good streaming) is to take a small portion of the wave and put it to memory (as a buffer, somewhat), and then switch over to the disk stream if needed. THAT'S the tricky part. As a contrast, VSampler streams, but it takes the whole thing off the disk, and does not do any memory buffering. I believe there's a switch for this - it won't do it if you don't want to. Anyway, Giga has a fixed amount of buffer (I think 2 seconds or so), while with HALion you can modify this. In Giga you can't turn the streaming off - in HALion I don't know. Perhaps if you set the buffer to a high enough margin it will do things entirely in memory (provided you don't lean on a key for eternity). Even so, there's CPU resources taken up measuring the time needed in which to buffer. I hope emagic provides an option for both - but: Giga and HALion have proved to be very efficient with streaming - lot's of voices, very stable. Don't believe everything you hear of newsgroups, etc. There are many many success stories - you just don't hear them as often. It may take more CPU resources - but if you got plenty of it (re: 1.6gHz P4), who cares? You can buy a system with that type of power for a song these days. Cut your load times by 1200%? That's a good deal! Garth Hjelte Sampler User

I don't know if you can stop this from happening when you write to the CD-R but on PC you can remove the "read only" attribute on a whole folder of files simultaneously in Explorer -- just right click on the folder and pick "Properties" the attributes are near the bottom just uncheck read-only. This is only true for WinME and up. With 98 it only works if you mark a file or a bunch of them directly. I installed a little tool called "DelAttrib QuickHack" which allows to reset all attributes for a complete folder under 98 too. Could look for the link or post it if anybody wants it. Apart from that, whenever I'm transferring files on CDs I usually zip or rar them up, so when unzipping/raring them they won't be write protected any longer (using rar audiofiles even get compressed to almost 50%, another nice thing). Cheers, Sascha

Interesting thread, as it's helped me realize that of the features of gigasampler that are most important to me, streaming is actually not at the top of the list. Not right now anyway... On the other hand if it wasn't there at all in exs24 I guess I would be pretty concerned. I do hope one day to take advantage of some of those huge giga libraries. Darcy

The whole idea is that instead of making libraries with limited functionality (that have to work with every blasted sampler on the planet), we will now make powerful Instruments with a core set of samples that are used to create new sounds/grooves very easily. When we have a new product to introduce, it will be much more interesting, because the engine and the product's features are tailored to the sounds and the concept of the instrument, instead of the other way around. Ack, stupid Microsoft Outlook (which I'm forced to use at work) wouldn't let me "break" the quotes, I was trying different random key commands and apparently Control-Enter is SEND instead of page break or whatever it is in Microsoft Word.. ANNNNyway, sorry about the blank message! I personally have a lot of interest in the Trilogy but the answer to my questions here could very well determine whether I purchase it or not. >Of course you can still use any of our libraries with the EXS, but these new >instruments contain ALL new sounds developed specifically for the unique >features of the instruments. I'd love to have the sounds, but I can't quite tell from your comments if you mean that if we as customers don't think the VST instrument is as stable/accurate/CPU&RAM-friendly as whatever our other sampler of choice is.. We -will- be able to use the "ALL new sounds" with our own sampler of choice? If so, will we be able to control all of the parameters of the samples through another sampler (EXS24 in my case)? Or will the samples only have very limited control parameters available in EXS24? Basically I plan to use my music live at some point and if EXS24 (since its hard coded into Logic) turns out to be a lot more stable and accurate and less CPU intensive than the Trilogy instrument, I might want to just trigger the Trilogy samples through EXS24. Can you let us know which of the new impressive innovative features the Trilogy will have will be able to be controlled in EXS24? Do you actually provide the EXS24 instrument or are the CDs constructed in such a way that EXS24 can extract the samples from them and create its own instrument? I realize a lot of the features listed on the web page are not currently possible in EXS24 (multiple articulations, matrix-style modulation routing etc)... I really do hope your company manages to make these instruments at least as fast stable and accurate as the dedicated software samplers out there! I suppose if nothing else I could just use your instrument in the studio and then re-sample what I create into EXS24 for live stuff.. but it would be awesome to tweak your new babies in real time without having to worry about bad latency or it crashing! Thanks for being on this list, Jeremy

Oh well.. I guess if the new instrument turns out to be less stable/accurate/etc than EXS24 I can always save its output to a wav file then load that into EXS24. I hope I won't have to but you never know.... Hopefully the quality of Spectrasonics VST instruments will live up to the quality of their samples but we won't really know until these instruments are released.
