As I also own HALion I must say that of course such a filter flexibility is
nice to have, but boy, it can certainly make your CPU throw up.
Also, what I like with the EXS is that you can clearly see your groupings, a
think that HALion (as some sort of tradeoff) doesn't offer.
I would however like to see a bit of improvements in the EXS filter section,
there should at least be useful further modes such as highpass, bandpass and
notch. That would allready make the filter way more flexible.
Anyways, from a more positive point of view: The EXS filter IMO sounds
pretty much better than those of the competitors (I had to compare Virtual
Sampler, VolksZampler, HALion and the EXS once).

FXpansions DR-008. Similar to N.I.s Battery but from what I can tell from
fooling around with Battery on a friends machine, I prefer it quite a bit.
Unfortunately it's PC only (yet?), but many of my wishes have been realized
with that thing as I've been one of the first testers.
Guess for natural sounding drums I'd return to the EXS though as soon as
Logic supports multiple outs and the EXS editor will be redone. HALion might
be a good choice then too, but Steinberg needs to fix the sample management
issue urgently.

I'm not Sascha, but I can recommend
1. Native Instruments Battery. I like it very much. It's easy to work with
and has some great creative possibilities. Also comes with a buch of
original kits elektro kits. But you have to be working in the style to
favour that.
2. FXpansion Dr-008 is also a very good drumsampler, with additional synth
drum modules en several levels of editing. That's why it takes some more
time to master it. That's kept me from using it a lot until now, compared to
Battery. It's however more flexible than everything else on the market (and
has a very good price!). Not much working content included though. FXpansion
being a small company Sascha has a point in stating that user wishes will be
implemented faster than with NI. Although the guys at NI are also quite
communicative.
DR-008 can be considered as combining the best of both worlds of NI's
Battery (samples - no filter) and Waldorf's Attack (analog synthdrums with
filtering and delay effects) on a kind of 'budget' level. Don't get me wrong
about that. It's not a budget machine in that kind of way!
BTW: I downloaded the NordKit for use in Battery and DR-008 :-). Nice synth
drums!

Just move them manually in explorer/finder. The EXS will find them
automatically wherever they are as soon as you load your patch.
It will however find them way faster once you specify a partition in its
preferences (EXS instrument editor > Edit > Preferences).
Whenever the EXS finds two or more samples of the same name it will ask you
which one to choose.

Hi there ...!
The harddisc on my G4 is divided in 2. A "program disc" and a
"Music disc" to my audio.
Because of more Exs samples the program disc soon will be to little.
How can I change it and give the "program disc" a giga from the
"music disc" ?? - Or can I save samples on an other disc ?
Hope I can do it without a new formatting.
Thank you, and we have a lot of snow in Denmark !!

You can not reallocated partitions after the fact. You can save sample on
any of your drives. EXS will scan for the change automatically.

Hi Ib,
Your divisions of your hard disk are partitions. To give one more gig
to your "music disc" you would have to initiliaze your HD,
partition it and
assign the appropriate Gigs to each partition. Unfortunately you would lose
all your Data.
Yes, you can also save samples on another disk/partition.
best wishes, no snow in New York yet,

Sascha, Thanks for the Nord instruments. I tried them out and found some
useful things. If you decide to create some of the other synths from samples
on the site be sure to post them, I would be interested in those as well if
you decide to create them. Some time I would like to upgrade to exs24
however right now I could only afford exsp24.
Thanks,
Paul

I believe that this only works if you move the samples to another folder on
the same drive. If it is on a different drive, the exs will not find them.

No, works inbetween drives as well (and that's even a must, just imagine you
have to change your drive structuring).
There's only two situations where the EXS won't find the correct samples:
- If they are on another drive than the one you specified (if at all) in
your EXS preferences. Nothing too bad, you can just switch that preference
to "all volumes" or change the drive letter.
- If the EXS finds a sample of the same name more than three times (easily
happening with drums). Whenever the required file doesn't show up in the
first three choices you're somewhat screwed. In this case the only way to
get your samples back properly would be to temporarily move the folders
containing the wrong samples (with the right name) temporarily to another
drive letter or zip them up or whatever.
I have been pretty much annoyed about this (among other things with the EXS)
and seriously hope that it will be adressed asap.

I allready finished 8 basic patches for the Waldorf Pulse.
Had no time to do anything more, plus I either had to readjust the loopoints
(some of them weren't as good as with the Nord patches) or setup some
completely by my own, which took some time.
As you have the EXSP you could fool around with some individual GUI settings
though. I might come up with some further patches the next days (well, let
me say next year...).
Two kinds of Waldorf samples I haven't tweaked yet, the
"alarmbass" and
"chordal" ones, the others are all there (I like the SuperSync one
quite a
bit).

Hello
You can store both samples and ESX Instruments anywhere you like...I have a
partition dedicated mainly as a sample store.
Just make sure you have an alias of the ESX Instruments folder - with the
same name - in your Logic folder.
Dave
I just got the EXS and am upgrading from my current 450 computer to
an AMD Athlon 1600. I have been reading all the suggestions of having
the audio programs on their own hard drive. What about on their own
computer? Is their any advantage to linking the two computers,
accessing my usual applications on the 450 and my audio on the AMD?

Well I'm thinking of getting battery (or dr008 if its ever for the mac) as
well as EXS. The advantages? Browsing samples to create kits is easy and
fast, and it treats each drum sample as an instrument with individual
envelope and settings rather than like exs where its common to the whole
mapped kit. Download the demo to play and see for yourself.

Not linking them is even better! Make you 1600 the dedicated music computer
without Internet etc.
I'm doing this for years now. Just a LAN-card for sending big downloaded
files from the Internet computer to the music computer.

(it was actually me writing that :-)
- in a dedicated drumsampler it's much easier to adjust settings for the
individual sounds on the fly
- it's easier to see what you're doing
- every sound in Battery can be given a name.
- drag & drop samples from explorer (or finder) and between cells
- extra functions (loop + count), shaper, envelope (pitch & amplitude),
tune, bit reduce
- flexible modulation matrix (also random as source)
- velocity crossfade
But i'm sure DR-008 has also a lot of these things and more! Battery is not
*better*
I actually use Battery because it was the first user friendly VST
drumsampler. I tried LM-4 but making kits with this one was a pain. I tried
DR-005 (predecessor of DR-008) but that one crashed on me when it couldn't
find its kits in Logic (I exchange songs with my fellow Galbatron musician
that has of course another path to store the kits on his machine). What's
easier than drag & drop the samples from Explorer and see everything
you're
doing (cells blinking, all parameters directly available on screen). I
almost never use accoustic drums, so the elektro kits delivered with Battery
are a good addition for me. It's also very simple to change the sounds in a
wink, so they're not identified as 'the preset kits' :-). It's a pity it
doesn't have a filter (or filters). Battery also imports S1000 (has been
optimized in the last update) so accoustic kits won't be a problem sing a
good library I guess.
But i'm sure DR-008 has also a lot of these things and more! Battery is not
*better*. I'm getting in to DR-008 more and more and it's also very good!
When you're on Windows it think I would recommend it as the best value for
money.
BTW: If you're a 'sound searcher' (letting your song play and try out all
your 45627 samples on your HD within the context of a song) DR-008 can do
this best. It can play with opened load dialog and you can try all sounds in
the dialog with cursor keys. Not possible with Battery (nor EXS!).

This actually is possible with Battery. If I remember correctly (I don't own
Battery but have been fooling around with it on a friends machine) there's a
little checkbox whenever you load a sample through the file selection box
saying something like "play in kit" or similar.
