If I remember correctly, the EXS only gives you a choice between samples that are identical -- i.e. not just having the same name, but having (at least) the same filelength as well. So it might very well be that you just have 5 or more copies of the exact same sample on your HD. If the EXS then lets you choose from 3 of them, it wouldn't matter which one you pick, as they're all the same anyway.
