I did, since you can get really loaded down before the screen slows down.

That's very interesting!
I just finished a mix using two stereo->stereo Altiverbs, and the
performance meters didn't show much of a hit at all. But the screen
was slowing down a little, and I had an I/O plug-in on one of the
channels previously (when I tried an external reverb).
I've actually found performance meters in general to be vague at
best. Can you actually see that happening on the performance meter?
