I always use input/output 1 or 1 and 2. It's rather trivial since the plugin is then disabled anyway, thereby routing nowhere. It just doesn't work if you don't do this. I don't get crackle (to my knowledge) on the instrument tracks. It's only when it's paired with UAD plugs on the Master, Buss, or Aux that I need to insert the I/O plug on all the UAD tracks. I haven't tested the Pultec on an instrument track by itself though.
